Connections #528 answers

Color Category Words
Yellow Sound like a dog BARK, BAY, HOWL, SNARL
Green Broadcast, as online media AIR, PLAY, RUN, STREAM
Blue Cocktail-making verbs GARNISH, MUDDLE, STIR, STRAIN
Purple Organizational structures, metaphorically CHAIN, LADDER, PYRAMID, TREE

How to solve the puzzle

  1. Start with the literal dog-sound group. BARK, BAY, HOWL and SNARL are all vocalizations associated with dogs, making this the most direct set.
  2. Look for media verbs. AIR, PLAY, RUN and STREAM can describe presenting or distributing media online.
  3. Spot the cocktail actions. GARNISH, MUDDLE, STIR and STRAIN are familiar steps or techniques in drink preparation.
  4. Use the leftovers for the purple group. CHAIN, LADDER, PYRAMID and TREE can each describe a hierarchy or organizational structure metaphorically.

Why some words are misleading

Connections deliberately uses words with several everyday meanings. RUN can describe a broadcast, but it is also a common verb for movement. PLAY may refer to entertainment rather than media distribution. CHAIN and TREE can describe physical objects, while AIR has ordinary meanings unrelated to broadcasting. Test a suspected group against all four words and reserve the strongest literal connection before committing.
