Short answer: The repeated alerts sent through the Xbox mobile app on February 25, 2026, were an erroneous test-notification campaign. Xbox apologized and said the problem was resolved. The available public reporting gives no indication that the messages represented a hack, phishing operation, or compromised Microsoft accounts.
What users received
Users reported receiving multiple identical Xbox mobile-app push notifications within a short period. The alert read:
“This is a dummy test message sent via braze. please capture a screenshot once you receive it. This should take you to the recently added gallery.”
The informal capitalization, spelling, screenshot instruction and reference to a “recently added gallery” made the message look like an internal developer or quality-assurance test that had reached a customer audience. These were push notifications from the Xbox app, not ordinary carrier SMS texts.

Was this an Xbox hack?
The available evidence points to a notification-delivery mistake, not a publicly evidenced account-security breach. Xbox characterized the event as erroneous test messaging. The reviewed reports do not describe stolen credentials, account takeovers, malicious links, requests for passwords or payment details, or unauthorized account changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat conclusion should not be overstated. Xbox did not publish a detailed security audit or technical postmortem in the cited statements. The most accurate formulation is that there was no indication in the available public reporting that the incident was a hack, rather than an independently verified forensic declaration that no security issue could possibly have existed.
Online theories that someone pushed a test campaign into production may be plausible, but they remain user speculation. Xbox did not identify a particular employee, campaign, environment, deployment or configuration error.

What does “Braze” mean?
Braze is a customer-engagement platform that companies can use to create, test, segment and deliver communications such as mobile push notifications and in-app messages. Its name appeared in the Xbox alert because the test text apparently traveled through an Xbox messaging workflow connected to Braze or a similar service.
The public reports do not establish that Braze itself caused the incident, was breached or malfunctioned. They establish only that Braze was named in the test message and that Xbox acknowledged an error in its notification process.
Why the alerts looked alarming
- They arrived unexpectedly and repeatedly.
- The wording addressed testers rather than ordinary players.
- “Braze,” “dummy test message” and “capture a screenshot” sounded like internal technical instructions.
- The volume encouraged fears that an account or phone had been compromised.
- Some users considered disabling or uninstalling the Xbox app, reactions documented in contemporaneous coverage and social-media discussions.
Those reactions explain the concern, but comments and hypotheses on Reddit or elsewhere are not technical confirmation of what happened.

What affected users should do
If the alerts have stopped
- Do not reply to the notification or treat it as a support request. It was presented as a test message.
- There is no indication that you need to reset a password solely because you received this alert.
- Install any available Xbox app update from the official Xbox support-linked store listing or your device’s official app store.
If you want to quiet Xbox notifications
- On iPhone, open Settings → Notifications → Xbox, then adjust or disable notifications.
- On Android, open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Xbox. Labels can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer.
Turning notifications off prevents future alerts on that device; it does not repair the server-side incident. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app was not identified by Xbox as a required fix.
If you see separate signs of account abuse
Use Microsoft account security to review sign-ins and security settings if you notice unfamiliar logins, password-reset emails, unauthorized purchases or other account changes. Those symptoms warrant normal account-protection steps; receiving the Braze test alert alone does not.
If similar messages continue
Continuing alerts after Xbox’s reported resolution should be treated as a separate or ongoing support issue. Check the app version, review notification permissions and contact Xbox Support through official channels. Do not click links or provide credentials in an unexpected message.

What remains unknown
- The exact number of affected users and total notifications sent.
- Whether “thousands” in secondary coverage reflects an official count or anecdotal reports.
- The specific campaign, audience, environment or deployment path involved.
- Whether delivery differed by iOS or Android, country, app version or account configuration.
- Whether Microsoft completed or published a technical postmortem.
- Whether any compensation or other remedy was offered.
As of the latest date covered by the available reporting, this was a resolved February 2026 service incident, not a confirmed ongoing Xbox security emergency.
Bottom line
Xbox accidentally sent an internal-style Braze test notification to users’ phones on February 25, 2026. The company apologized and said it fixed the problem. The evidence supports an embarrassing messaging failure, while offering no public indication of phishing, account takeover or a Braze breach. If alerts continue or you see independent signs of account activity, use official Xbox and Microsoft security channels rather than acting on the test message itself.
