Google’s popcorn Doodle was a time-limited multiplayer survival game published on September 26, 2024. Up to 59 players could compete, either alone or in squads, using popcorn-kernel abilities to avoid attacks and remain the last unpopped player.
What was the popcorn Google Doodle?
The game celebrated popcorn and a giant popcorn machine at Carnival Magic Theme Park in Phuket, Thailand. The machine was reported as 25 feet high, 11 feet wide and 9 feet deep.
Google presented the Doodle as a record-setting interactive game because it allowed the highest number of players in a single Doodle match at that point. Its playful description said:
“You butter believe that today’s interactive Doodle is celebrating your go-to movie companion and classic late-night snack: popcorn! This game is making Doodles history by allowing the highest number of players to compete in a match at the same time ever! Play solo or invite friends to play with you in squad mode.”

How the popcorn game worked
Survive instead of chasing a score
The objective was simple: be the last player whose kernel had not been popped. Players moved around the arena, avoided incoming projectiles and used a selected ability at the right moment. Contact with the boss caused an immediate knockout.
Choose one of three kernels

The ability was activated with the spacebar. Choosing when to spend it mattered more than pressing it repeatedly: Shield and Heal were defensive options, while Catch & Throwback depended on an opponent firing at the right time.
Player counts and game modes
Up to 59 players
A full match could include as many as 59 competitors, the feature that made this Doodle unusual among Google’s browser games.

Solo play
Solo mode let one player enter the survival match without forming a team.
Squad mode
Squad mode allowed friends to play together. The survival objective still determined the outcome, but grouping up added a social option for players who did not want to play alone.
What made a match difficult?
- Four antagonists: attacks came from four different enemies, so players had to watch more than one threat.
- Projectile pressure: incoming shots could damage or eliminate a kernel unless the player evaded them or used an ability.
- Boss contact: touching the boss caused an instant knockout rather than ordinary damage.
- Large lobbies: with dozens of players sharing the arena, positioning and timing became increasingly important as the match narrowed.

- Open Google’s homepage during the Doodle’s run and select the popcorn artwork.
- Choose solo play or invite friends through squad mode.
- Select one of the three kernels: Shield, Heal, or Catch & Throwback.
- Move to avoid projectiles and keep away from the boss.
- Press the spacebar when your chosen ability is most useful.
- Continue until you are the last unpopped player.
The Doodle was designed as a browser game, so it did not require a separate game installation. The documented control for the special ability was the spacebar.

The event was time-limited and was stated to be available through September 26, 2024. That date is now historical. There is no confirmed evidence here that the game remains on Google’s homepage or that an official playable archive is currently active in 2026, so readers should not assume the original match is still accessible.

Why this Doodle stands out
Most Google Doodle games are short solo diversions built around a score, a puzzle or a single challenge. The popcorn game instead combined a large player lobby, squad play, a last-player-standing objective and three situational powers. That combination made it closer to a compact battle-royale-style experience than a conventional score-attack Doodle.
For a real-world popcorn night, a popcorn maker or kernels are optional extras; they were not needed to play the browser game.
