Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers are the simplest choice for Fallout 4 on PC: connect one by USB or Bluetooth, make sure Windows detects it, then launch the game. PlayStation and generic pads can work, but they may need Steam Input or another translation layer. Bethesda’s compatibility guidance is documented at Bethesda Support.
Before you start
- Use a charged controller or a data-capable USB cable.
- Connect or power on the controller before launching Fallout 4.
- Identify your edition. Steam Input instructions apply to the Steam version or a configuration launched through Steam, not automatically to the Xbox app or Microsoft Store edition.
- Temporarily disconnect other gamepads, wheels, fight sticks and controller-remapping utilities while testing.
Fastest setup: Xbox controller
- Connect an Xbox 360, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S controller by USB. For wireless play, pair it with Windows Bluetooth and turn it on.
- Allow Windows to install or use the controller driver.
- Confirm the controller is active, then start Fallout 4.
- Test both sticks, the triggers, bumpers, face buttons and menu navigation.
Bethesda explicitly describes Xbox One and Xbox 360 pads as plug-and-play on PC. A Series controller normally works when Windows exposes it as an XInput device, but connection mode and driver support can affect detection. If an Xbox One controller fails, Bethesda recommends closing the game, rebooting the PC and checking that the controller firmware is current: Xbox controller troubleshooting.
Check whether Windows detects the controller
- Press the Windows key and search for Set up USB game controllers or Game Controllers.
- Open the controller’s properties.
- Press every button and move both sticks and triggers.
If inputs do not register here, Fallout 4 cannot use the pad reliably. Check the USB port and cable, batteries, Bluetooth pairing, firmware, drivers and the controller itself before changing in-game bindings. The legacy joy.cpl shortcut may also open the panel on some Windows installations, but the Settings search is the safer current route.
Change Fallout 4 controls
- Press Esc to open the system menu.
- Select Controls.
- In the Keybindings tab, select the action you want to change.
- Press the desired keyboard key or controller input, then confirm with Bind.
Bethesda documents this path for PC controls at its keybinding support page. Keyboard and controller bindings can be displayed differently, and some actions are context-sensitive. A binding that works in a menu can still be inappropriate for a gameplay context if the wrong input type was assigned.

Steam Input: when to enable or disable it
On the Steam edition, open Library, right-click Fallout 4, choose Properties, then open Controller. Test one mode at a time:
| Controller | First setting to try | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | Use default settings (or Disable Steam Input when native XInput works) | Enable Steam Input only for a custom layout or if native detection fails. |
| DualShock 4 or DualSense | Enable Steam Input | Disable it only when testing native PlayStation detection and glyphs. |
| Generic DirectInput pad | Enable Steam Input with a standard gamepad layout | Try another layout or a translation method if buttons or axes are missing. |
Restart the game after changing the per-game setting. Steam Input can translate PlayStation, Xbox and generic controllers into inputs the game recognizes. Its documentation also warns that external tools can make Steam see a virtual Xbox 360 controller instead of the original device: Steam Input documentation. Do not run Steam Input and DS4Windows, InputMapper or another remapper on the same controller during a basic test; use one translation layer at a time.
PlayStation controller setup
DualShock 4
Connect by USB or Bluetooth. If Fallout 4 does not detect it, enable Steam Input for the game and select a gamepad layout. If you prefer PlayStation labels, test native detection with Steam Input disabled as described below.

DualSense
Sony documents both USB-C and Bluetooth connections for DualSense on PC. To pair it:
- Turn the controller off.
- Hold Create and PS until the light bar flashes.
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings and select the controller.
- Start Steam or the game after pairing completes.
The pairing guidance is at PlayStation support. Sony notes that advanced features vary by game and some require USB, so do not assume Fallout 4 provides DualSense haptics or adaptive triggers: PlayStation PC accessories.
Getting PlayStation button glyphs
Working input and matching on-screen symbols are separate issues. Fallout 4 commonly shows Xbox-style prompts when a controller is exposed as XInput. For the Steam version, Bethesda’s current glyph procedure is:
Rank #3
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Right-click Fallout 4 in Steam and select Properties.
- Open Controller and choose Disable Steam Input.
- Connect the PlayStation controller, preferably by USB if wireless detection does not produce the expected result.
- Launch the game and test the prompts.
See Bethesda’s PlayStation-glyph instructions. This prioritizes native PlayStation identification but can reduce compatibility. If the pad stops responding, restore Steam Input and accept Xbox prompts or use another compatible configuration. Glyph behavior depends on controller model, connection method and the game’s current configuration; it is not guaranteed across every PC edition.
Generic controllers
First verify the device in Windows, then enable Steam Input and choose a normal gamepad layout on the Steam edition. DirectInput-only pads may need a translation layer, and unusual button ordering can require manual remapping. Avoid installing a paid emulator just for basic play: Steam Input is already available to Steam users, while extra virtual devices can create conflicts.

Which controller is the least trouble?
- Xbox controller: best for minimum setup because Bethesda explicitly documents Xbox One and Xbox 360 plug-and-play support and the game’s prompts normally match.
- DualShock 4 or DualSense: sensible if you already own one; expect to choose between Steam Input compatibility and a more conditional native-glyph setup.
- Generic controller: workable when Steam Input presents a standard gamepad, but the most variable option.
If you need an accessory, start with a data-capable USB cable for testing. A Bluetooth USB adapter is useful for a desktop without Bluetooth, but wired testing removes pairing and interference variables. No subscription is required for the basic setup.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fallout 4 support controllers on PC?
Yes. Bethesda explicitly lists Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers as plug-and-play; other controllers may need additional configuration.
Can I use a PS5 DualSense controller?
Yes, through USB or Bluetooth, with Steam Input often providing the most straightforward compatibility. Advanced DualSense features are not guaranteed in Fallout 4.

Why do I see Xbox buttons with a PlayStation controller?
The game is usually receiving the controller as XInput through Steam Input or another translation layer. Try Bethesda’s Steam Input-disabled glyph procedure if native detection works.
Should Steam Input be enabled?
Use native/default handling first for Xbox. Try Steam Input enabled for PlayStation or generic pads, and do not combine it with another remapper during testing.
Can I use Bluetooth?
Yes, provided Windows pairs and detects the controller. USB is the best fallback when wireless pairing or prompts are unreliable.
Why does my controller work in Steam but not Fallout 4?
Steam detection does not guarantee game detection. Check the per-game Steam Input mode, launch with the controller already connected, remove duplicate virtual devices and relaunch.

Can I play modded Fallout 4 with a controller?
Usually, but controller-interface mods or other input utilities can intercept controls. Disable them temporarily and test an unmodded profile when troubleshooting.
