Freedoom supplies the levels, graphics, sounds and music; the source port supplies the playable engine. The original Doom shareware episode is also historically free, but Doom II and the registered episodes are commercial releases.
What “free Doom” actually means
A Doom download has two separate parts:
- Game data (WAD): levels, artwork, sound effects and music.
- Engine (source port): the program that runs that data on a modern operating system.
Freedoom is game data, not an engine. Its project describes it as “a complete, free content first person shooter game, based on the Doom engine,” and says it “is not a program.” Downloading a source port alone therefore does not give you the original Doom campaigns.

Which legal download should you choose?

Use the official Freedoom download page for the WAD files. The project’s content is intended to be freely used, copied, modified and redistributed under its project license, making it the clearest fully free alternative to unofficial “full Doom” bundles.
Freedoom versus the original Doom shareware
The historical Doom shareware release made its first episode available at no cost. It is not the same as a free release of every Doom game: the registered episodes and Doom II were commercial content, and there was no shareware version of Doom II. Random websites offering a “full Doom” download should not be treated as equivalent to the official shareware distribution or Freedoom.

Choose an engine: Chocolate Doom or GZDoom?

Freedoom also lists Eternity Engine and Crispy Doom as compatible choices. Chocolate Doom is the better match when historical behavior matters; GZDoom is the more flexible choice for modern visuals and ambitious mods.
How to install a free Doom alternative
- Download the game data. Choose Freedoom Phase 1, Phase 2 or FreeDM from the official Freedoom download page.
- Download a source port. Select Chocolate Doom for a close-to-DOS experience, or GZDoom for modern rendering and customization.
- Place the WAD where the port can find it. On Windows, putting the Freedoom
.wadbeside the engine executable is the simplest method. On Unix-like systems, use the standard Doom data location supported by your distribution and source port. - Launch and select the IWAD. Point the port at the corresponding Freedoom WAD when prompted. The IWAD is the main game-data file the engine uses to start the game.
- Match mods to the right game format. Use Phase 1 with Doom or Ultimate Doom-style mods. Use Phase 2 or FreeDM with Doom II-style mods. A mod can fail to load or behave incorrectly when paired with the wrong IWAD.
- Verify the download. Use the checksums or digital signatures linked from the official Freedoom release page before launching files obtained from mirrors.
Windows, Linux and other platforms
Windows
Chocolate Doom provides Windows downloads, and the beside-the-executable WAD arrangement is usually the quickest setup. GZDoom can use the same Freedoom WAD after you install its Windows build.

Linux and other Unix-like systems
Chocolate Doom supplies source code and package or installation instructions for Unix-like systems. Put the WAD in the data directory expected by your installed port, then select it through the port’s launcher or command options.
Android and other devices
Freedoom’s WAD files are portable game data, but the engine is what determines device support. Android availability depends on a compatible source-port build; use a maintained port for that platform and follow its documented WAD directory and launcher steps rather than assuming a desktop package will run unchanged.

Common problems and fixes
“IWAD not found” or a blank game list
The engine cannot see the WAD. Confirm that the file has a .wad extension, is in the port’s search path, and is the actual Freedoom download rather than a compressed archive that still needs extracting.
A mod says the required IWAD is missing
Check the mod’s target. Doom/Ultimate Doom projects generally need Phase 1; Doom II projects generally need Phase 2. FreeDM is designed for deathmatch rather than monster-based campaigns.

The game looks or behaves unlike classic Doom
Use Chocolate Doom and its vanilla-oriented settings. GZDoom intentionally adds modern rendering and gameplay options, so its defaults will not reproduce the original DOS presentation exactly.
A downloaded “full Doom” bundle seems suspicious
Do not rely on unofficial mirrors that bundle commercial Doom data. Download Freedoom from its official project page, or use the historically free shareware release where appropriate, and verify hashes or signatures.

Bottom line
For a complete free game, install a source port and pair it with Freedoom: Phase 1 for Doom-style compatibility, Phase 2 for Doom II-style single-player content, or FreeDM for deathmatch. Choose Chocolate Doom for faithful classic behavior and GZDoom for modern features. The original Doom shareware episode is free, but that does not make Doom II or the registered episodes free.
