Average Wordle Score and Stats: What They Mean and How to Find Yours

Your Wordle average depends on guesses, losses, and the comparison group. Here is how to find the official statistics panel, calculate your own mean, read the guess distribution, and compare dated public benchmarks without mixing incompatible figures.

There is no single official average Wordle score for everyone. Your personal average is a calculation based on guesses used, solved games, and how you count losses; public figures are dated snapshots from defined groups of players. The New York Times statistics panel is the authoritative place to find your own games played, win percentage, streaks, and guess distribution.

What a Wordle score measures

Wordle is a daily five-letter word game with six attempts. Colored tiles show whether a letter is in the answer and whether it is in the correct position. A day’s score normally means the number of guesses needed to solve that puzzle: 1 through 6. A game that ends without a solve needs a stated loss value if you include it in an average.

How to find your Wordle statistics

  1. Open Wordle on the New York Times website or in the NYT Games app.
  2. Complete the puzzle, or open the puzzle’s results view if your account already has a result recorded.
  3. Select the statistics or bar-chart control.

The panel shows the record for the account and device context displayed, including games played, win percentage, current streak, maximum streak, and a guess-distribution graph. Linking statistics to a New York Times account can help preserve and associate that record; treat the panel as your personal record rather than a community average.

What the statistics panel tells you

Metric What it means
Games played The number of Wordle games recorded in the statistics view.
Win percentage The share of recorded games that you solved.
Current streak How many consecutive recorded games you have solved most recently.
Maximum streak Your longest consecutive run of solved games in the recorded history.
Guess distribution How many games you solved in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 guesses; losses may be shown separately or assigned a failure bucket.

How to calculate your average score

Let n1 through n6 be the numbers of games solved in one through six guesses. Let L be your number of losses, and choose a loss value F. Then calculate:

average = (1*n1 + 2*n2 + 3*n3 + 4*n4 + 5*n5 + 6*n6 + F*L) / (n1+n2+n3+n4+n5+n6+L)

For example, a loss can be counted as 7 or 7.5 in published calculations. Neither convention is universally correct; the important point is to disclose which one you used. If you exclude losses, remove F*L and divide by the total number of solved games only. Averages made with different loss rules cannot be compared fairly.

Worked example

Suppose your distribution is 0 ones, 2 twos, 8 threes, 10 fours, 5 fives, 1 six, and 1 loss. Counting a loss as 7 gives (2*2 + 8*3 + 10*4 + 5*5 + 1*6 + 1*7) / 27 = 101/27, or about 3.74 guesses. If you report a solved-games-only average, the denominator is 26 and the loss is omitted; that produces a different number and must be labeled accordingly.

Why guess distribution matters more than one average

A mean compresses your results into one number. The distribution shows the shape behind it: how often you finish quickly, how often you need five or six guesses, and whether losses are concentrated in a difficult period. Two players can have the same mean while one records mostly threes and fours and the other alternates between twos and sixes. Check the full distribution and win percentage before judging whose performance is stronger or more consistent.

What is a good Wordle average?

Use your goal and the comparison group to answer that question. A lower solved-game average means fewer guesses, but it is not automatically better if it comes with a materially lower win rate or a different loss convention. A useful personal snapshot includes:

  • average guesses and the loss rule;
  • win percentage;
  • games included and the puzzle-date range;
  • the complete 1-to-6 guess distribution;
  • whether you played standard or hard mode.

Without those details, labels such as “good” or “bad” are too broad to be reliable.

Published Wordle averages and their limits

Public trackers generally report a defined WordleBot cohort, not every Wordle player. Engaging Data describes its display as a New York Times WordleBot sample of more than 1,770,000 games. That large sample is useful for context, but its result depends on who was included and how the tracker defines a game and an average.

As a dated example, Wordle Today reported an average of 4.11 guesses, a 98.0% win rate, and 1,775,783 players counted for puzzle #1924 on September 25, 2026. This is a puzzle-specific snapshot, not a lifetime average for every player.

Hard mode is tracked as a separate cohort by the cited tracker, so do not compare a standard-mode figure with a hard-mode figure as if they came from the same conditions. Public statistics also change with the puzzle date, sample size, and reporting method.

How to compare your score with other players

  1. Match the puzzle date or use the same date range.
  2. Match the mode: standard or hard.
  3. Record the number of games or players in each sample.
  4. Confirm whether the figure is a solved-games average or includes losses.
  5. Write down the loss value used, such as 7 or 7.5.
  6. Compare win percentage and the complete guess distribution alongside the mean.

This checklist prevents a personal lifetime record from being mistaken for a one-puzzle community snapshot and prevents averages built with incompatible rules from being treated as equal.

Quick interpretation checklist

  • Start with the New York Times statistics panel for your own record.
  • Read the distribution, not just the average.
  • State how losses were handled.
  • Keep standard and hard mode separate.
  • Date any community benchmark and identify its cohort.
