Short answer: The RTX 4060 Ti is typically 20–25% faster in modern rasterized gaming, markedly more efficient, and adds DLSS Frame Generation and AV1 encoding. The RTX 3060 Ti can still be the better buy when used-market pricing is substantially lower. For a new purchase that you will keep for years, the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti is the safer 4060 Ti variant, but neither card is an ideal long-term 1440p ultra solution.

Gaming performance: faster, but not a generational knockout
Rasterized games
Tom’s Hardware’s current hierarchy gives the RTX 4060 Ti a 32.5% index score versus 26.4% for the RTX 3060 Ti, roughly a 20–25% lead in that aggregate. Results change with game, preset, driver, CPU, resolution and whether upscaling is enabled. The 4060 Ti’s advantage is real but much smaller than NVIDIA’s selected launch claims of up to 1.7x performance, which used particular games and DLSS-heavy settings. See the hierarchy and NVIDIA’s test methodology for context.
At 1080p, a fast CPU can become the limit, shrinking the visible difference between these GPUs. At 1440p, the 4060 Ti generally remains ahead, but its narrow bus and 8GB capacity can erase much of the lead in bandwidth- or texture-heavy workloads.

Ray tracing, DLSS and Frame Generation
The 4060 Ti usually separates more clearly in ray-traced games. Ada’s third-generation RT cores, Shader Execution Reordering and newer Tensor cores improve efficiency, while DLSS Super Resolution is available on both cards. Only the 4060 Ti supports DLSS Frame Generation. It inserts AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames, increasing displayed smoothness; it does not equal rendering twice as many native frames, does not remove the underlying CPU or VRAM bottleneck, and can add artifacts or latency. It is most useful in supported single-player games, not latency-sensitive competitive play. NVIDIA describes the feature at this launch overview.
1080p: the 4060 Ti is the better new purchase
Both cards can deliver strong 1080p results. Choose the 4060 Ti when prices are close: it is faster, uses less power and offers Frame Generation. The 8GB model can still hit texture-memory limits at ultra settings in newer releases, so reducing textures or using DLSS may be necessary. Competitive titles may show little gain if the CPU is already limiting frame rate.
A used 3060 Ti remains sensible when it is meaningfully cheaper and your priority is conventional raster performance. NVIDIA’s game examples—including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Forza Horizon 5 and The Witcher 3—are vendor-selected demonstrations, not a universal average.
1440p: usable with compromises
The 4060 Ti is usually faster at 1440p, but neither card guarantees maximum settings in every modern game. The 3060 Ti’s 256-bit bus supplies substantially more raw bandwidth, while the 4060 Ti relies on a large L2 cache to reduce external memory traffic. That design works often, not always. The 8GB 4060 Ti is especially vulnerable to texture streaming, stutter and reduced settings when a game exceeds its memory budget. DLSS Super Resolution can make either GPU practical at 1440p; Frame Generation can improve perceived smoothness on the 4060 Ti, but cannot fix insufficient base rendering performance or exhausted VRAM. Tom’s review consequently positions the 4060 Ti primarily as a 1080p product.

What 16GB changes
- Average FPS: Usually similar when 8GB is enough; the core GPU is otherwise the same.
- Minimums and stutter: Can improve when 8GB causes asset eviction or streaming.
- Settings: More demanding textures, mods and some 1440p configurations become viable.
- Non-gaming work: Extra capacity can help video, 3D and local AI workloads that fit within 16GB.
Do not treat 16GB as an automatic speed upgrade or as “future-proof.” If its price approaches a materially faster current-generation GPU, buy the stronger GPU instead. NVIDIA states that the variants usually perform similarly when memory capacity is not the limit; independent 16GB analysis is available in Tom’s review.
Power, thermals and compatibility
Efficiency and physical fit
NVIDIA specifies 140W average gaming power for the 4060 Ti versus about 197W for the 3060 Ti in its comparison. Lower draw generally means less heat and easier cooling, and makes the 4060 Ti attractive for compact cases or modest power supplies. Noise still depends on the partner cooler, fan curve and factory overclock. A three-fan card may be cooler but longer than a two-fan design.
Rank #2
- Equipped with NVIDIA DLSS3, high efficiency Ada Lovelace arch, full lay-tracing
- 4th Generation Tensor Core: DLSS 3 delivers up to 4x the performance of brute force rendering
- 3rd Generation RT Core: Up to 2X the lay-racing performance
- OC Edition: Boost Clock 2595MHz (OC Mode) / 2565MHz (default mode)
- Axial-tech fan design with a small hub for longer blades and a barrier for downward air pressure
PCIe 4.0 x8 on older systems
The 4060 Ti uses PCIe 4.0 x8. On a PCIe 4.0 motherboard this is normally no concern. A PCIe 3.0 system effectively provides PCIe 3.0 x8 bandwidth; the impact varies with game, storage and asset streaming, and matters more when VRAM is already full because data may spill into system memory. Owners of Ryzen 1000/2000, Intel 8th/9th-generation or similar platforms should check the motherboard generation, but PCIe 3.0 alone is not an automatic deal-breaker.
Power supplies and connectors
Use the exact manufacturer’s requirement rather than the GPU name alone. NVIDIA lists a 550W recommended system supply for the 4060 Ti; 3060 Ti recommendations commonly reach 600W. Partner cards may use different eight-pin or 12VHPWR arrangements and higher limits.

Streaming, editing and AI
Both cards provide hardware video encoding. The Ada-based 4060 Ti adds AV1 encoding, which can improve quality or efficiency where the current streaming, recording or editing software and platform support AV1. Support is application- and service-dependent, so verify the version you use. For creator and AI workloads, 16GB capacity can matter more than gaming averages; software must still fit within available VRAM.
Used RTX 3060 Ti inspection checklist
- Confirm the exact model, memory type and condition.
- Run a demanding game or GPU stress test for 15–30 minutes.
- Watch temperatures, clocks, fan behavior and visual artifacts.
- Test every display output you need.
- Inspect the PCB, screws, cooler, corrosion, missing seals and signs of a modified BIOS.
- Prefer a return window, buyer protection or a clearly stated warranty.
Age matters: many 3060 Ti cards have had years of heavy use, including possible mining. A low sticker price is poor value if the cooler, fans or power supply must be replaced.
How to decide in 2026
Compare the final price after tax and shipping, and separate new, manufacturer-refurbished, retailer-refurbished and used stock. Live listings change quickly; check NVIDIA Marketplace, Best Buy and Newegg.
- Choose a 3060 Ti: It is substantially cheaper, you mainly play rasterized 1080p or moderate 1440p, and the card passes testing with returns.
- Choose a 4060 Ti 8GB: Its price is within roughly 10–15% of a comparable 3060 Ti and you value efficiency, a newer warranty or Frame Generation.
- Choose a 4060 Ti 16GB: You need additional VRAM for textures, mods, creator work or AI, and the premium is reasonable versus faster alternatives.
- Skip both: Either costs close to a substantially faster current-generation card, or you require sustained 1440p ultra performance.
Recommendations by buyer
- New 1080p buyer: RTX 4060 Ti when prices are close.
- Used-market value: RTX 3060 Ti at a large condition-adjusted discount.
- Ray tracing and modern features: RTX 4060 Ti.
- Small case or limited PSU: RTX 4060 Ti, after checking the specific cooler and connector.
- VRAM-sensitive work: RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, provided its price does not buy a stronger GPU.
- Existing RTX 3060 Ti owner: Keep it for ordinary raster gaming. Upgrade only for Frame Generation, AV1, lower power, extra VRAM or a favorable replacement price.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: The RTX 4060 Ti is the superior technology and the better new, efficient 1080p card, while the RTX 3060 Ti remains compelling when used pricing is low. The 4060 Ti 16GB offers useful headroom rather than a large automatic FPS gain. Existing 3060 Ti owners should generally wait unless they specifically need the newer features or can upgrade at an unusually favorable cost.
