What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no Windows command that reliably converts every game to borderless mode. Use the game’s own Borderless or Fullscreen Windowed setting first; if it has only ordinary windowed mode, try a game-specific launch option, then use Borderless Gaming to remove the frame. Fullscreen-only older games may require Borderless Gaming’s more invasive BGProxy mode.
What borderless windowed mode actually is
Exclusive fullscreen gives the game control of the display mode. It can have latency advantages in some titles, but switching applications may be slower or less reliable. Windowed runs in a normal desktop window with a title bar and borders. Borderless windowed (also called fullscreen windowed) remains a desktop window, but matches the display size and hides its frame, making alt-tab and multi-monitor use more convenient.
Borderless is not automatically faster, slower, or lower-latency. Results depend on the game, renderer, Windows version, GPU driver, overlays, HDR, variable-refresh support, and monitor arrangement.
Try the game’s built-in setting first
- Launch the game and open Settings, Options, or Graphics.
- Open Display, Video, or Graphics.
- Set Display Mode to Borderless, Borderless Windowed, Fullscreen Windowed, or Windowed Fullscreen.
- If required, set the resolution to your monitor’s native resolution, apply the change, and restart the game.
Labels are not consistent. In some games, Fullscreen means borderless; in others it means exclusive fullscreen. Look for an explicit Exclusive Fullscreen versus Borderless distinction rather than assuming the labels behave alike.

Try Alt+Enter
Focus the game and press Alt+Enter. Wait for the display mode to change, then inspect the game’s display settings. This is a common Windows-game shortcut, not a universal command: some engines ignore it, intercept it, or use it only to switch between exclusive fullscreen and ordinary windowed mode. If you get a small framed window, continue with the utility method below.
Force windowed mode with launch options
Steam
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Remain on the General tab and find Launch Options.
- Enter the option documented for that game, close the dialog, and launch it.
Valve lists these window-related options for supported games: -startwindowed, -sw, -windowed, -window, and -win. See Steam’s display and launch-options guidance.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
These switches request windowed mode; they do not guarantee a frameless window. A command accepted by one engine may do nothing in another. -popupwindow is sometimes documented by individual games or engines for a borderless-style window, but it is not a universal Steam command.
If a launch option causes a black screen or crash, return to the same Properties page, delete all text in Launch Options, close it, and relaunch. Valve recommends removing launch options when troubleshooting display problems. The general Steam path is also documented at Steam Support.

Epic, GOG, Microsoft Store, and standalone games
- Epic Games Launcher: open Library, use the game’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, and look for launch options where available.
- GOG Galaxy: check the game settings or launch-parameter field.
- Standalone games: inspect the shortcut’s properties, the launcher, or a configuration file in the installation or user-data folder.
- Microsoft Store/Xbox app: executable and configuration access is often restricted, so the in-game setting or a window-management utility is usually more practical.
Search the game’s official support page for its exact engine and supported display commands. Generic switches are not portable between titles.
Remove the frame with Borderless Gaming
For a game that runs in ordinary windowed mode but still shows borders, Borderless Gaming is the direct-purpose option. It is an open-source project with a source build and a Steam version.

- Set the game to ordinary Windowed mode.
- Launch the game and leave it running.
- Open Borderless Gaming and select the game in its application list.
- Add it to favorites or apply the borderless/fullscreen action.
- Confirm that the title bar and borders are gone and that the window covers the intended display.
- Only after manual mode works, enable automatic application for that game.
If nothing happens, target the actual game window rather than its launcher, make sure the game is not minimized, and run both programs at the same privilege level. Disable overlays one at a time and recreate stale per-game profiles before trying deeper options.
Fullscreen-only games: BGProxy
Borderless Gaming’s newer BGProxy pipeline attempts to turn fullscreen-only games into normal, resizable windows. The project describes OpenGL and DirectX 8 through DirectX 12 support, but compatibility remains game-specific; this is more invasive than repositioning an existing window. Details are in the project’s BGProxy announcements.

- Test it offline or in a noncompetitive game first.
- Back up the original executable and display configuration.
- Do not assume proxying or injection is allowed by every anti-cheat system.
- If the game stops launching, remove the per-game profile or uninstall the proxy component.
For competitive or anti-cheat-protected games, prefer the native borderless setting and check the game’s current support policy before using third-party tools.

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games improves presentation for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games already running windowed or borderless, and can expose Auto HDR or variable-refresh features on supported systems. It does not change a game’s display mode.
- Open Start → Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Under Default settings, enable Optimizations for windowed games.
- Restart the game.
For one title, add or select it on the same Graphics page, choose Options, select Let Windows decide, Power saving, or High performance, set the per-game optimization preference, choose Save, and restart. Microsoft documents the feature at its Windows 11 support page.
Manual fallback when a utility cannot detect the game
- Switch the game to windowed mode.
- Set its resolution to the monitor’s native resolution.
- Move it to the intended monitor.
- Use the title-bar maximize control or Windows window controls.
This can leave a taskbar gap, one-pixel border, incorrect scaling, or a misaligned cursor. Treat it as a diagnostic or temporary workaround; a dedicated border-removal utility is more reliable for a permanent setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Tiny window | Use the monitor’s native resolution, remove conflicting launch options, and try Alt+Enter. Back up before deleting or renaming a graphics configuration file. |
| Black screen after a launch option | Remove every option in Steam Properties, relaunch, and use the game’s safe mode or reset-configuration choice if provided. |
| Visible borders remain | Target the real game window, not the launcher; check for a second rendering window; use the utility’s borderless action instead of ordinary maximize. |
| Wrong monitor or spanning | Choose the display in the game’s own settings, then check the window manager’s monitor and size settings. |
| Blurry image | Match native resolution, check Windows display scaling and DPI compatibility, and do not enable an upscaler unless you intend to render below native resolution. Magpie recommends a High DPI scaling override of Application for older games that handle DPI incorrectly; see its documentation. |
| Cursor offset | Disable unusual DPI overrides and utility scaling, use native resolution, and retest with overlays disabled. |
| Taskbar visible | Confirm the window truly covers the display and that you used the utility’s fullscreen action rather than normal maximize. Check taskbar auto-hide before restarting Explorer. |
Free and paid alternatives
| Tool | Best for | Key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Borderless Gaming | Removing borders and positioning windowed games; BGProxy for some fullscreen-only titles. | Compatibility varies; third-party tools may conflict with anti-cheat. |
| Magpie | Free, open-source window upscaling on Windows 10 v1903+ or Windows 11 with DirectX feature level 11. | It is primarily an upscaler, not a dedicated border-removal solution. |
| Lossless Scaling | Windowed or borderless games when you also want scaling or frame generation. | Steam listed $6.99 USD in August 2026; regional prices and sales vary. It requires Windows 10 version 2004 or newer and DirectX 11. Its listing says anti-cheat safety cannot be guaranteed. See the Steam page. |
Which method should you choose?
| Your situation | Best first choice |
|---|---|
| Native Borderless or Fullscreen Windowed setting exists | Use it; it has the lowest compatibility risk. |
| Only Windowed mode exists | Use the game’s documented launch option or configuration file, then Borderless Gaming if borders remain. |
| Fullscreen-only legacy game | Consider BGProxy only after ordinary methods fail. |
| You also need upscaling or frame generation | Consider Lossless Scaling; choose Magpie for a free upscaling-focused alternative. |
Start with the game’s own borderless mode. Use launch options only when that title documents them, Borderless Gaming for a framed window, and BGProxy only for resistant fullscreen-only games. Borderless mode can improve switching and multitasking, but its performance, HDR, VRR, capture, and multi-monitor behavior still depend on the complete game and Windows setup.
