The 2024 Asus ROG Ally X can work as an Xbox handheld through Xbox Remote Play. Your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S runs the game, while the Ally X streams its video and audio and sends your controls back over the network. It does not install or run the Xbox console version locally.
This is different from the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, which launched with Xbox Full Screen Experience integrated. The older Ally X can still use Remote Play—and may receive Full Screen Experience when its Windows and Xbox software, region, and rollout status support it.
What you need
- A 2024 ROG Ally X or another compatible Windows gaming handheld.
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S with the game installed.
- The current Xbox app on the handheld and the same Microsoft account signed in on both devices.
- Internet access on the console and handheld.
- Remote features enabled on the Xbox.
- The console powered on or set to Sleep, not fully shut down.
- A Game Pass plan that meets Microsoft’s current requirements in your region. ASUS currently says online console multiplayer, including Xbox Remote Play, requires Game Pass Ultimate, Standard, or Core; verify the terms for your market at Xbox Game Pass.
Remote Play is a streaming connection, so latency, jitter, packet loss and Wi-Fi stability matter more than a headline download-speed number. Ethernet to the Xbox is preferable when practical.
Enable Remote Play on your Xbox
- Turn on the Xbox.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Devices & connections, then Remote features.
- Turn on Enable remote features.
- Run the capability test and fix any warnings it reports.
- Wait for the confirmation that the console is ready for Remote Play.
- Open Power options and select Sleep.
Xbox system updates can rename or rearrange these menus. If the path differs, search Settings for Remote features. ASUS likewise requires the console to be on or in Sleep mode for Remote Play: ASUS support documentation.

Connect the Ally X in the Xbox app
- Open the Xbox app on the Ally X.
- Select your avatar or profile icon in the upper-left.
- Choose View profile.
- Scroll to Where I Play and find your linked console.
- If it is missing, choose Add a console and follow the prompts.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the console and choose Remote Play.
- Wait for the connection animation to finish, then use the Ally X’s built-in controls.
The console may not appear until Remote features are enabled and the Xbox is in Sleep mode. Use the same Microsoft account on both devices, update the Xbox app, and restart both devices before trying to add the console manually.
What you can—and cannot—play
Remote Play streams games installed on the linked Xbox, including supported Game Pass games installed there. The Ally X is not downloading the console build, and the Xbox remains occupied while you play. Console account permissions, parental controls, installed-game availability and any required online-service entitlement still apply.

Cloud Gaming is not a second name for Remote Play. It does not use your physical console. Conversely, Remote Play does not turn the Ally X into a self-contained Xbox.

Make streaming more reliable
- Connect the Xbox to the router by Ethernet if possible.
- Keep the Ally X on a strong, low-interference Wi-Fi connection; Wi-Fi 6 or 6E can help, but does not guarantee low latency.
- Test on your home network before relying on Remote Play while traveling.
- Pause large downloads, uploads and video streams during play.
- Move closer to the access point or use a less congested band when stutter appears.
- Expect more delay and compression over the internet than on the same local network.
A fast speed test cannot reveal every problem: jitter, packet loss, router behavior and the quality of the upload path can still cause delayed controls, blocky video or disconnects. Competitive, latency-sensitive games are a poorer fit than slower-paced titles.
Xbox Full Screen Experience on the 2024 Ally X
Microsoft expanded Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) to Windows-based handhelds after the 2024 Ally X article was published. Where the feature is available, open Windows Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience, choose Xbox as the home app, and enable Enter full screen experience on startup.
Availability is not guaranteed on every 2024 Ally X: it can depend on Windows and Xbox-app versions, retail versus Insider builds, geography and Microsoft’s staged rollout. The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) is a different product with FSE built into its experience: ASUS product page.

FSE is a handheld-friendly launcher and task view, not Xbox hardware. It does not make console games native, remove Windows compatibility issues or automatically raise game frame rates.
Return to the Windows desktop
On the ROG Xbox Ally family, ASUS documents swiping up from the bottom edge and selecting Windows Desktop. On an older Ally X, use the equivalent Exit full-screen experience or desktop control shown by your current build; a keyboard can help if touch navigation is unavailable. Once back in Windows, disable Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience > Enter full screen experience on startup. See ASUS’s support instructions.

The console is missing from the Xbox app
- Confirm both devices use the same Microsoft account.
- Check that Remote features are enabled and the console passed its test.
- Put the Xbox in Sleep rather than Shutdown.
- Confirm both devices are online and update the Xbox app.
- Restart the Xbox and app, then use Add a console.
Remote Play is laggy or blurry
Try the same-network connection first, move the Ally X nearer the router, wire the Xbox, stop competing traffic and test another game. If local play is stable but travel play is not, the internet path—not the handheld controls—is likely the limiting factor.

The Xbox wakes, then disconnects
Check that the console keeps network access in Sleep mode. Router restrictions, unstable Wi-Fi, a system update or expired account authentication can interrupt the session. Port forwarding is not a first-line fix; investigate your router’s documentation and security implications before changing it.
Controls are not recognized
Close and relaunch Remote Play, confirm the Ally X is in its normal gamepad mode, and test another title. A docked setup can use a paired Xbox controller, but the handheld’s integrated controls should work for the standard Xbox-app workflow.
FSE is unavailable
Install Windows and Xbox-app updates and check whether Gaming contains Full screen experience. The feature may not yet be offered to your build or region. Remote Play through the regular Xbox app remains usable without FSE.

The console shuts down
Remote Play cannot wake a fully shut-down console. Select Sleep under Power options; the original guide notes that Sleep uses more power but is necessary for this function.
Remote Play alternatives
- Cloud Gaming: Useful without an Xbox console, but limited by supported games, region, subscription and network conditions.
- Native PC versions: Best when the game has a Windows release or Play Anywhere entitlement; these run offline when Microsoft’s licensing rules permit.
- Another handheld: The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X offers a more integrated Xbox startup experience, but buying it is not required for the 2024 Ally X’s core Remote Play function.
Remote Play itself is never offline. Separately, ASUS says qualifying locally installed Xbox/Microsoft Store games can generally be played offline if launched online within the previous 14 days, with Microsoft Store offline-permission limits: ASUS offline-play guidance.
