The model code is the reliable answer. HAC-001 is the original Switch, HAC-001(-01) is the revised, longer-battery standard Switch, HEG-001 is the Switch OLED Model, and HDH-001 is Switch Lite. Find that code on the console—not from the box color—to identify what you have.
Find the model code first
- OLED Model: open the rear stand. The code HEG-001 is printed underneath.
- Standard Switch: look on the rear shell for HAC-001 or HAC-001(-01).
- Switch Lite: look on the back for HDH-001.
Nintendo’s model-identification guidance says the model number is clearly specified for the individual console. This marking is more dependable than packaging, shell color or a seller’s listing description.
What each model code means
| Model code | Common name | Screen | Internal storage | Published battery estimate | TV mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HAC-001 | Original standard Switch | 6.2-inch LCD | 32 GB | 2.5–6.5 hours | Yes |
| HAC-001(-01) | Revised standard Switch (often “V2”) | 6.2-inch LCD | 32 GB | 4.5–9 hours | Yes |
| HEG-001 | Nintendo Switch – OLED Model | 7.0-inch OLED | 64 GB | 4.5–9 hours | Yes |
| HDH-001 | Nintendo Switch Lite | 5.5-inch LCD | 32 GB | 3–7 hours | No |
The battery figures are Nintendo’s estimates for new systems. Actual runtime varies with the game, brightness, wireless features and battery age.
How to tell the original Switch from V2
Check HAC-001 versus HAC-001(-01)
HAC-001 is the first standard model. HAC-001(-01) is the hardware revision commonly called V2. Both have a 6.2-inch LCD, 32 GB of internal storage and the same basic docked, tabletop and handheld concept, so the suffix is the decisive check.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Use the serial prefix as a secondary check
Nintendo’s support data associates standard-console serial prefixes beginning XAW with the original HAC-001 and prefixes beginning XKW with HAC-001(-01). Treat the printed model code as primary; serial prefixes are a useful confirmation when the rear label is worn or a listing is unclear.
Why battery life helps—but does not prove the model
An original HAC-001 is rated for about 2.5–6.5 hours, while HAC-001(-01) is rated for about 4.5–9 hours. A used battery can perform below either range: Nintendo says lithium-ion capacity falls to about 80% of a new battery after roughly 800 charge cycles. Runtime testing therefore cannot replace reading the model code.

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
How to tell OLED from the regular Switch
Visual and hardware checks
- Screen: OLED has a 7.0-inch self-emissive OLED touch screen with more vivid colors, deeper blacks and higher perceived contrast; the standard model has a 6.2-inch LCD.
- Storage: OLED has 64 GB; standard Switch has 32 GB. System software reserves part of either amount, so usable space is lower.
- Stand: OLED has a wide, adjustable metallic stand. The standard unit has a replaceable rear stand.
- Audio: OLED has enhanced onboard audio for handheld and tabletop play.
- Dock: OLED normally includes the HEG-007 dock with a built-in wired-LAN socket. The standard HAC-007 dock needs a USB LAN adapter for wired networking.
Dimensions
| Specification | OLED HEG-001 | Standard HAC-001(-01) |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions with Joy-Con | 4.0 × 9.5 × 0.55 inches | 4.0 × 9.4 × 0.55 inches |
| Battery estimate | 4.5–9 hours | 4.5–9 hours |
The OLED system supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes and the full Switch game library. Nintendo released it on October 8, 2021.
How to identify Switch Lite
HDH-001 identifies Switch Lite. Its 5.5-inch LCD and integrated controls make it smaller and handheld-only; it cannot output video to a television. It runs Switch games that support handheld mode. Games without the handheld-mode icon require compatible wireless controllers, plus a separate way to recharge those controllers.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
Used-console inspection checklist
- Photograph the model code: under the OLED stand, or on the rear shell of a standard Switch or Lite.
- Compare the physical screen: 7-inch OLED, 6.2-inch LCD or 5.5-inch Lite LCD.
- Open System Settings → System → System Serial Information and check available storage. Approximately 64 GB points to OLED; approximately 32 GB points to standard or Lite, allowing for reserved system space.
- Inspect the dock. A built-in LAN socket indicates the OLED dock; the standard dock requires a USB LAN adapter for wired internet.
- If the label is readable, compare the serial prefix: XAW (original standard), XKW (revised standard) or XTW (OLED).
- Ask for battery-health history or test runtime. Charge-cycle wear can make a used console’s performance differ substantially from Nintendo’s original estimate.
Accessory compatibility
Model-specific fit matters. The OLED screen is larger than the standard Switch and Lite screens, so Nintendo warns that screen protectors made for the original Switch or Lite may not fit it. Choose an OLED-specific protector for HEG-001. Dock accessories also differ: use the OLED dock’s built-in LAN port, or add a USB LAN adapter when networking through the standard HAC-007 dock.
