Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The developer links some cases to instability on certain 13th- and 14th-generation Intel systems, but does not say every crash has that cause. Its two official options are to restore CPU stability using Intel or motherboard guidance, or skip shader compilation as a temporary workaround that may still lead to crashes in play.
What problem is Game Science addressing?
Shader compilation happens when the game prepares rendering code for your hardware. In the affected cases, Wukong can crash during that process, report “Out of video memory” despite apparently adequate VRAM, crash immediately after compilation, or later fail during demanding gameplay. Game Science’s graphics FAQ, reproduced in a developer-marked Steam discussion, specifically warns that some 13th- and 14th-generation Intel CPUs may be involved; it does not establish that all Intel processors, or all crashes, are affected.
See the referenced FAQ at Game Science’s graphics support page and the developer-marked Steam discussion.
The two official workarounds
1. Restore CPU stability
Game Science directs affected players to Intel or motherboard-vendor instructions for underclocking or returning the processor to stable operating limits. This is not a universal in-game setting: BIOS/UEFI menus, CPU models, laptop firmware and motherboard options differ.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Record your original BIOS settings before changing anything.
- Check for a BIOS or microcode update and an Intel-recommended default-power profile before attempting manual tuning.
- Do not copy a voltage, multiplier or power-limit value from another system.
- Overclocking, undervolting and power-limit changes can alter performance, temperatures, stability and warranty support.
- Laptop owners should use the manufacturer’s documentation rather than desktop BIOS instructions.
Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility is linked from the developer-marked discussion, but it should be used only with model-specific stability guidance: Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.
2. Skip shader compilation
If compilation repeatedly crashes, use the game’s skip option to reach the menu. Game Science warns that a system failing at compilation may still crash during play, so skipping is a diagnostic or temporary route—not proof that the underlying CPU, memory, BIOS, driver or file problem is repaired. Successful compilation can also reduce rendering hitches.

Try these safer checks first
- Install the current game update. Let Steam finish downloading and applying it before launching.
- Remove mods. Game Science says mods can cause launch failures, save-loading problems and in-game error pop-ups after updates.
- Verify files in Steam. Open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver. This is standard PC troubleshooting, not a confirmed universal Wukong fix.
- Disable overlays and injectors. Temporarily turn off recording tools, GPU overlays and aggressive monitoring or tuning utilities.
- Reduce optional rendering load for testing. Disable ray tracing and frame generation, then retest. Treat this as isolation, not a developer-issued cure.
- Investigate CPU stability only after the clean test. This is especially important if the processor is a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel model.
If the game fails after an update
Patch 1.0.14.17737, released February 20, 2025 (UTC+8), warned that shaders would need to recompile. Its notes told players to restart until compilation completed or skip it if crashes continued. The same notes advised removing mods and verifying files when an update caused launch or save problems.
- That patch was approximately 1.9 GB to download and reserved about 4.5 GB of temporary disk space during installation.
- It fixed an issue that could produce errors when entering the game under certain conditions and added an experimental NXSR super-resolution option.
- Those figures and changes apply to that specific patch; they are not a statement of the current build. Check Steam’s live update history before relying on an old version number.
Steam’s support listing gives the current PC baseline as Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB RAM and 130 GB storage, with a GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 580 8 GB minimum, and lists an i5-8400/Ryzen 5 1600 minimum CPU. Recommended hardware includes an i7-9700/Ryzen 5 5500, RTX 2060/RX 5700 XT/Intel Arc A750 and DirectX 12. The listed tests assume DLSS, FSR or XeSS; an SSD is recommended at minimum and required for the recommended specification. Confirm the live listing at Steam’s Black Myth: Wukong support page.

AMD graphics cards: handle the old-driver report carefully
A developer-marked Steam discussion references Radeon driver 24.5.1 as a workaround for an AMD-specific crash report and links to AMD’s previous-driver archive. That is a dated, hardware-specific report—not evidence that every Radeon user should downgrade.
- Try the current driver recommended for your exact GPU and Windows version first.
- Consider a rollback only if the problem began after a driver update and the older package supports your hardware.
- Older drivers can lose security, compatibility, performance or features in other games.

Community suggestions that are not official fixes
Steam users mention -dx11 and -dx12, frame-generation changes and manual configuration edits. The available Game Science guidance does not confirm these as universal fixes. Test one change at a time, remove a launch option if it does not help, and avoid registry edits or unknown configuration downloads unless a current first-party source documents them. DX11 may also remove features such as ray tracing or frame generation, depending on the game’s implementation.
When the evidence points to hardware instability
Escalate the stability investigation when shader compilation fails repeatedly after a clean update, the same PC crashes in other demanding Unreal Engine 5 games or workloads, or you see WHEA hardware errors, BIOS instability or failed stress tests. In that situation, repeatedly skipping shaders can hide the trigger without correcting it. Follow your motherboard and Intel documentation, return experimental tuning to known-stable defaults, and change one variable at a time.

What to send Game Science support
Steam identifies Game Science as the developer and publisher and lists [email protected] for support. Include:
- CPU, GPU, RAM and motherboard or laptop model
- Windows build and graphics-driver version
- Game version shown by Steam
- The exact error text and where the crash occurs
- Whether compilation was skipped, whether mods were installed, and which troubleshooting steps changed the result
This evidence is for the PC/Steam version. It does not establish the same cause or fix for PlayStation 5 or Xbox.
The Bottom Line
Start with updates, a mod-free launch and Steam file verification. If shader compilation still crashes, skipping it may get you to the menu, but recurring gameplay crashes—especially on some 13th- or 14th-generation Intel systems—call for a model-specific CPU and firmware stability check rather than an assumption that the shader workaround solved the problem.
