The “hands-on” Switch 2 experience at CES 2025 involved a non-functional Genki mockup, not a playable Nintendo console. It offered a useful look at the apparent size, port placement and Joy-Con redesign, but it could not reveal performance, battery life, display quality or software.
What was actually on display?
Accessory maker Genki displayed a 3D-printed Switch 2-shaped dummy in Las Vegas alongside cases and other proposed accessories. Reports published during CES identified it as a shell or scale model intended to demonstrate dimensions and accessory fit, rather than working Nintendo hardware.
Nintendo had not officially shown the console when the display appeared on January 8, 2025. Genki said its model was based on measurements from real Switch 2 hardware, but that claim was not independently demonstrated at the event. Tom’s Guide reported the public display and accessories, while Ars Technica documented the physical observations.
What the mockup appeared to show
| Observed or reported detail | What it suggested | What it did not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Larger tablet body | A physically larger handheld than the original Switch | Exact final dimensions or production materials |
| Larger apparent screen | More display area within the Switch-style form factor | Panel type, resolution, brightness, contrast or response time |
| Larger Joy-Con controllers | A revised control shape | Comfort, durability or final weight |
| Magnetic- or snap-on-looking attachment | A departure from the original Switch’s side rails | How secure or durable the production connection would be |
| Extra right-side button | A new physical control, later widely called the “C” button | Its function or software support |
| Apparent second USB-C port on the top edge | Changed charging or accessory possibilities | Whether it supported charging, video, peripherals or another function |
| Optical sensor shown or discussed by Genki | Potentially new controller functionality | Its purpose, accuracy or game compatibility |
These were visual and physical observations of a model. They should not be read as a complete list of Nintendo’s final specifications.

The redesigned Joy-Cons were the biggest visual change
The mockup’s controllers appeared larger and seemed to connect to the tablet with magnets or a snap-on mechanism instead of the original rail arrangement. That could make attachment and removal faster and change how the console feels in handheld mode, but a static model cannot establish connection strength, wear resistance or reliability.
Genki also showed or discussed an optical sensor. A sensor visible on a dummy does not establish what software would use it, how accurately it would track movement or which games would support it. The additional right-side button was similarly an observed control, not proof of a particular feature.

What handling the model could tell you
- Whether the larger proportions felt materially different from the original Switch.
- How the apparent screen increase affected the balance of the handheld.
- Whether the revised Joy-Con shape looked more comfortable or more cumbersome.
- Whether the model’s magnetic-looking connection appeared secure while attached.
- Whether existing cases, grips, docks or screen protectors obviously matched the new outline.
- Why new port and button locations would require purpose-built accessories.
What it could not tell you
- Game performance, frame rates or loading times.
- Battery life, fan noise or wireless performance.
- Display technology and image quality.
- The operating system, user interface or backward compatibility.
- Final build quality, materials, tolerances or durability.
- The function of the extra USB-C port or the additional button.
- Price, launch timing or the contents of the retail package as of CES.
How credible was Genki’s claim?
The model looked more consequential than a fan render because its proportions and visible features matched multiple leaks and accessory designs circulating at the time. Genki claimed it had measured actual hardware. However, CES did not provide a Nintendo confirmation, teardown, authenticated engineering sample or independent measurement proving that the company had handled a final or near-final console.
The most accurate description is therefore: a reportedly hardware-informed, non-functional accessory mockup. It was useful physical evidence, but it was not official evidence.

Why the CES appearance mattered
A physical reference point
Readers and journalists could compare a tangible object with leaked renders instead of judging only flat images.
An early accessory ecosystem
Genki was already presenting cases and related products before Nintendo’s public reveal. That made port locations and external dimensions commercially important, while offering no guarantee that the accessories were licensed or would fit final retail hardware.

Pressure and publicity
The display appeared only days before Nintendo’s announcement and generated substantial attention for Genki. The timing is notable, but there is no established evidence that Nintendo announced the console because of Genki.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happened after CES?
- January 8, 2025: Reports described Genki’s dummy and accessories at CES.
- January 16, 2025: Nintendo officially announced Nintendo Switch 2.
- June 5, 2025: Nintendo Switch 2 launched commercially.
Those later events provide retrospective context, not proof of what CES attendees knew. A feature visible on the mockup can be described as later confirmed only if Nintendo’s official product information established it; the mockup itself was never a playable preview of the final user experience. Engadget’s retrospective coverage follows the later announcement and launch timeline.

What this means for Switch owners buying accessories
Do not assume that an original Switch case, grip, screen protector or dock will fit simply because the new console retains the family resemblance. Check that a product explicitly lists compatibility with the final retail Switch 2, including clearance for its ports, display, dock and Joy-Con connection.
Genki’s official site is genki.gg, and Nintendo’s console information is at Nintendo’s Switch 2 page. Prices and availability vary by country and can change; the CES mockup was not enough to guarantee accessory compatibility.
Verdict
The CES 2025 mockup was valuable as a physical preview of the Switch 2’s apparent larger body, revised Joy-Cons and changed external layout. It was not a hands-on preview of Nintendo’s actual console experience. Treat what was seen as a set of informed physical clues, keep Genki’s hardware-access claim attributed, and separate those clues from the specifications Nintendo confirmed later.
