Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on November 19, 2024, into a surge of simultaneous players. Two days later, Microsoft said it had increased capacity and was admitting more users, yet many still faced failed connections, very long loading screens and incomplete content. The explanation was not simply “there were not enough servers”: several online services, new data-heavy features and incompatible add-ons could fail at different points.
What happened at launch
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 released for Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S, including PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate availability at launch. Microsoft’s initial support notice described long loading times, service outages and a large number of users initializing the simulator at once: official support thread.
On November 20, Microsoft identified an overloaded service handling data requests for features such as Career mode and missions. That service overload produced delays, errors, missing aircraft and difficulty getting into the simulator, according to Microsoft’s launch-day update.
On November 21, Microsoft reported that capacity had been increased and that more players were entering, but also acknowledged that access problems continued: November 21 forum update.

Why adding capacity did not immediately fix access
A launch-day initialization surge
Players were not merely connecting to a conventional game server. Large numbers were simultaneously authenticating, synchronizing profiles and requesting the data needed to initialize a new simulator. That created a sharp burst of traffic rather than a steady, predictable load.
More than one service was involved
Microsoft specifically described an overloaded data-request service, then later referred to additional capacity in the distribution layer. Those are different parts of the delivery path. Expanding one layer can allow more users through while another service, queue or dependency remains constrained.
New online-dependent features increased requests
Career mode and missions were central to the launch explanation. They required data transactions beyond the basic startup experience familiar from earlier versions. MSFS 2024 also emphasizes streamed world data, activities, weather and traffic across a detailed digital representation of Earth. That design makes service bottlenecks visible during both login and content loading. Microsoft’s product description is available in the Xbox overview and its launch announcement.
Capacity expansion was gradual, not an instant reset
Microsoft’s November 21 statement said more players were getting in while access issues persisted. The reasonable inference is that admission was being increased in stages or that another bottleneck remained, but Microsoft did not publish a complete architectural postmortem identifying the exact remaining constraint. It is therefore more accurate to describe a multi-layered recovery than to claim that a single server upgrade failed.
What players experienced
- Very long initial loading screens or failure to reach the main menu.
- Connection errors and service-outage messages.
- Delays loading Career mode and mission data.
- Aircraft or other content missing after loading.
- Queue-like or throttled access reported by some players; Microsoft’s official wording focused on overloaded services and controlled access rather than naming a universal queue.
- Crashes and startup failures linked to certain third-party add-ons.
These symptoms did not necessarily share one cause. Microsoft’s launch-day account covers the access and data-service failures, while its later update separately discusses Marketplace compatibility: November 27 update.

The 99.999% figure is Microsoft’s own reported metric, not an independently audited uptime measurement. Its November 27 communication also listed further patches planned for the weeks of December 2 and December 9.
The add-on problem was a separate failure path
Microsoft said some non-aircraft third-party MSFS 2020 Marketplace content carried into the new simulator could cause long loading times, crashes and other startup problems. It temporarily disabled that content while it investigated, planned user controls to enable or disable content, and announced a safe-boot option for cases where third-party material prevented startup.
That distinction matters: a player unable to enter the game could have been affected by the launch surge, a problematic add-on, or both. A missing aircraft did not automatically mean a purchase had been lost; incomplete synchronization or Marketplace availability could produce the same appearance.

Was the launch crisis fixed?
Historically, Microsoft said yes, but in stages. The November 22 update described improved stability and smoother access. On November 27, Microsoft said access and streaming problems had been resolved and services were performing as expected. That did not mean every launch bug, crash or compatibility issue disappeared; the add-on mitigation and planned patches show that reliability and broader game defects were separate work.

This article concerns the November 2024 launch incident. It should not be read as evidence that the same demand crisis is still active in 2026. A current outage, login failure, local network fault, corrupted installation or entitlement problem can look similar and requires checking contemporary service notices.

Game Pass: the lower-commitment test
Where the applicable plan and platform support it, Game Pass lets uncertain players try the simulator without immediately buying an edition. Subscription access ends if the subscription ends, and cloud play adds another network-dependent layer. Check the current terms on the official Xbox listing.
Standard Edition: for committed players
The Standard Edition is the sensible purchase for someone who expects to play regularly and does not want subscription dependence. The Xbox listing displayed a $69.99 regular price and a temporary $52.49 promotion during the cited period; prices vary by territory, platform, account and date.
Higher editions: extra content, not better access
Deluxe, Premium Deluxe and Aviator editions primarily add aircraft and airports; the Aviator edition also includes 30 Microsoft-published Marketplace aircraft from the 2021–2024 period. The displayed Xbox prices were $99.99, $129.99 and $199.99 respectively, with temporary promotional prices shown at the time. None is a remedy for server, loading or compatibility problems.
Buy hardware and add-ons last
A Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas One is listed by Microsoft as compatible with Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the official store also lists a Next Level Racing Microsoft Flight Simulator cockpit: Microsoft Flight Simulator store. These products improve control or immersion only after the base simulator works reliably. Marketplace aircraft, scenery and missions should likewise be added after checking compatibility; Microsoft’s launch-period warning shows that add-ons can introduce their own loading and crash failures. The Marketplace guide is at the official Marketplace introduction.
How to interpret a similar failure
- Check current Xbox and Microsoft Flight Simulator service-status notices.
- After a service recovery, restart the simulator and allow extra time for synchronization.
- If startup crashes or never completes, temporarily remove or disable third-party and migrated Marketplace content.
- Use the version’s official safe-boot or content-management option when available; menu names can differ by platform and update.
- Do not assume a missing aircraft means the entitlement is gone until account, synchronization and Marketplace status have been checked.
The launch record shows why “Microsoft ran out of servers” is an incomplete diagnosis. A demand spike overloaded a data-request service, capacity changes had to propagate through distribution and streaming layers, and incompatible content created an independent source of failures. Microsoft’s later updates document a recovery, but they do not erase the distinction between restored access and a completely bug-free simulator.
