Professional Apex Legends players had their clients manipulated during the ALGS North American finals on March 17–18, 2024. Genburten appeared to receive wallhack-like vision and a cheat interface, and TSM’s ImperialHal was later affected. EA postponed the remaining finals. The incident made players fear a remote-code-execution (RCE) vulnerability, but the public evidence did not prove that attackers gained arbitrary control of Windows PCs or that Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) was the entry point.
What happened at the ALGS North American finals
During Match 3, DarkZero player Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose suddenly appeared able to see opponents through walls. A cheat-style interface was visible on his screen, reportedly including the label “TSM HALAL HOOK” and other attacker messages. Genburten could no longer participate normally while his teammates continued.
TSM’s ImperialHal was subsequently hit by an apparent cheat injection or other unauthorized game manipulation. Because the interference happened during a live, high-profile competition, EA and ALGS organizers postponed the remaining North American finals rather than continue with compromised competitive conditions. BleepingComputer, TechCrunch and GameSpot reported the sequence.
Respawn later said that “a few professional Apex Legends player accounts were hacked” and that it was deploying layered security updates. That wording confirms an account-security incident, but it does not identify whether the attacker exploited Apex, an account or session, a related service, a third-party tool, or a computer that was already infected.

Why players feared an RCE vulnerability
Remote code execution means an attacker can cause a target device to run attacker-controlled instructions remotely. In the worst case, that can enable malware installation, credential theft, persistence or surveillance.
Seeing an unauthorized feature appear inside a running game is alarming, but it is not automatically proof of operating-system-level RCE. Code executing inside the Apex process, a stolen account, and unrestricted control of Windows are different technical outcomes. A cheat can also be injected through a vulnerable game component, a launcher or a compromised machine without giving the attacker full control of the computer.

TechCrunch reported statements attributed to the online name Destroyer2009 claiming that the method did not involve Apex servers and did not reach outside the Apex process. Those claims were not independently verified and do not establish the exploit’s scope. TechCrunch’s report also noted that there was no public proof of an EAC RCE at that point.
Was Easy Anti-Cheat hacked?
Easy Anti-Cheat said it had investigated reports of a possible RCE issue and was confident that no RCE vulnerability within EAC was being exploited. That directly contradicts the claim that the tournament incident was proven to be an EAC RCE.

The denial does not amount to a complete postmortem of the ALGS attack. EAC addressed whether its own component was being exploited; Respawn did not publicly disclose the precise path used against the players. The responsible conclusion is therefore that EAC was suspected, then publicly rejected as the demonstrated RCE source—not that every Apex-related component was proven secure.

Were ordinary Apex players at risk?
No public evidence demonstrated mass exploitation of ordinary players. The known cases involved recognizable professionals in a heavily watched tournament, making them unusually attractive targets for disruption or harassment.

- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
That is different from proving that ordinary players could not have been affected. The available record did not quantify the risk outside the tournament, so “no evidence of widespread exploitation” is supportable while “everyone was safe” or “everyone was vulnerable” is not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you stop playing Apex Legends?
A cautious player could pause Apex until EA and Respawn issued more detail. That was a precaution, not evidence that launching the game guaranteed a computer compromise. Respawn said it had begun protective updates, while contemporary reporting still described the technical cause as uncertain.

Players who continued should keep the game and its surrounding software current and avoid unofficial downloads. Competitive-integrity measures and later anti-cheat actions do not, by themselves, prove what caused the 2024 incident.
What concerned players should do
- Update everything. Install the latest Apex Legends build, EA app or Steam client, Windows updates, graphics drivers and security definitions.
- Run a full security scan. Use a reputable, updated security product. Malwarebytes recommended scanning systems in its incident coverage; that is its guidance, not an EA requirement. Malwarebytes’ report explains its recommendation.
- Secure the EA account. Change the password if compromise is suspected, use a unique password, enable available sign-in protections, review recent activity and check linked accounts.
- Remove suspicious software. Review recently installed programs and browser extensions. Do not download supposed fixes, cheat demonstrations, exploit tools or unofficial patches.
- Isolate a possibly infected PC. Disconnect it from the internet and investigate the device separately from the game if a scan finds malware or you see unexplained account activity.
- Report abuse. Use Apex’s in-game reporting tools or EA Help. EA’s rules prohibit account hacking and software intended to disrupt other players: EA’s Apex rules and reporting guidance.
What later anti-cheat updates do—and do not—tell us
EA and Respawn continued anti-cheat work after the tournament. On March 4, 2026, Respawn said accounts confirmed to be using devices such as XIM, Cronus and Strikepacks for an unfair advantage would receive permanent bans. On June 17, 2026, the team said a new detection system had removed 1,000 accounts in its first week and targeted leaderboard positions. On July 13, 2026, EA said it had carried out nearly 6,000 hardware bans since the end of April.
Those announcements show ongoing enforcement against cheating and input devices. They do not identify the root cause of the March 2024 ALGS hacks or prove that a particular 2026 measure fixed that event. EA also described a separate player-name validation fix; it should not be presented as the ALGS exploit’s fix. See the July 13, 2026 update, June 17, 2026 update, March 4, 2026 update and the separate validation clarification.
Bottom line
The ALGS hack was real: professional Apex clients or accounts were manipulated live, and the event was postponed. An RCE-level vulnerability was a reasonable fear, but the public record did not prove arbitrary PC takeover, mass exploitation or an EAC vulnerability. EAC denied that its RCE was being exploited, Respawn confirmed hacked professional accounts and layered updates, and the exact technical root cause remained undisclosed in the available reporting. Updating, scanning, securing your EA account and avoiding unofficial software are sensible precautions; stopping play entirely was a personal risk decision rather than an officially required response.
