Yes. PPSSPP – PSP emulator is an official, standalone App Store app for iPhone and iPad. The U.S. listing checked on August 18, 2026, showed version 1.20.4, a free download, and a minimum requirement of iOS/iPadOS 13. It does not include commercial PSP games: you must supply legally obtained game files.
What PPSSPP does
PPSSPP emulates Sony’s PlayStation Portable, allowing PSP software to run on Apple devices. It can offer higher-resolution rendering, texture upscaling, save states, customizable screen layouts, cheats, graphics enhancements, RetroAchievements and supported ad hoc multiplayer. It is not made by or affiliated with Sony; PSP is a Sony trademark. The project describes broad compatibility, but performance still varies by game, device and settings.
Official project information is available in the PPSSPP iOS documentation.

Apple’s emulator-policy changes made the official release possible in May 2024, after years of development. It is now an established App Store release rather than a newly arriving sideload-only build. Use the official App Store listing, not a similarly named app or a random IPA.
What changed in PPSSPP 1.20.4
The official May 16, 2026 release announcement lists cross-platform improvements, some of which benefit iOS users directly:
- Live ad hoc multiplayer status from compatible relay servers.
- Better handling of RetroAchievements subsets.
- Basic iOS deep-link support and additional soft-keyboard symbols.
- Automatic extraction of some 7z files.
- Fixes for crashes, texture upscaling, file and image browsers, screenshots and game-rendering problems, including reported scenarios in The Warriors, Grand Theft Auto and God of War.
See the 1.20.4 release notes and the user-facing announcement for the complete change list.
Install the authentic iOS app
- Open the Apple App Store.
- Search for PPSSPP – PSP emulator, or open the direct listing.
- Confirm Henrik Rydgård/Millionth Line AB as the developer.
- Install and open the free app.
- Allow requested file access, then add your own game files.
The App Store version does not require a jailbreak. Sideloaded builds are a separate, unofficial route and should not be confused with the supported App Store installation.

How to add PSP games
PPSSPP supports commonly dumped ISO, CSO and CHD files. The app supplies the emulator, not copyrighted games. Use games you legally own and create personal backups where your local law permits; rules about private copies and distribution differ by jurisdiction.
Wi-Fi upload (PPSSPP 1.20 and newer)
- Connect the iPhone or iPad and the source computer or device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open PPSSPP’s Games tab and navigate to the destination folder.
- Tap the Upload Files icon (a folder with an upward arrow).
- PPSSPP displays a local web address. Open that address on the other device.
- Upload the ISO, CSO or CHD file, wait for completion, then return to PPSSPP and open or rescan the folder.
The method is documented in PPSSPP’s Wi-Fi file-transfer guide.
USB transfer from a Mac
Connect the device, open Finder, select the iPhone or iPad, and use its file-sharing area to copy game files and save data into PPSSPP’s app storage. The iOS documentation describes the current path.
USB transfer from Windows
Use Apple’s Apple Devices app to access app file sharing and copy the files into PPSSPP’s storage.

Performance and iOS limitations
Ordinary App Store apps cannot use JIT (just-in-time machine-code generation). PPSSPP says JIT could improve efficiency and battery consumption, but modern iPhones and iPads can generally run PSP emulation without it. “Generally” is important: internal resolution, texture effects, game complexity, device age, heat and battery-saving behavior all affect results. Do not treat broad compatibility as a promise that every title or mod will run at full speed.
The current iOS documentation lists two missing hardware-input features:
- Camera input
- Microphone input
Earlier gaps such as UI keyboard input, background-image replacement and device rotation have been addressed in later releases. Apple’s review process can also make iOS updates arrive later than releases for Android, Windows or macOS.
If a game is slow
- Lower the internal rendering resolution.
- Reduce or disable texture scaling and post-processing.
- Try another available graphics backend.
- Test the unmodified game before troubleshooting a mod.
- Let the device cool if thermal throttling is suspected.
Controllers are strongly recommended
Touch controls work, but simultaneous shoulder buttons, face buttons and analog movement can be awkward. PPSSPP supports Bluetooth gamepads, Made-for-iPhone-style controllers, wired USB-C pads and clip-on iPhone controllers. Release notes also mention Bluetooth improvements, including Select-button behavior and Guide-button mapping. Compatibility and button mapping vary by controller, iOS version, connector and game.

A Bluetooth or USB-C controller is the flexible option for both iPhone and iPad. A clip-on controller is more portable; verify Lightning-versus-USB-C compatibility and whether your phone case fits. Backbone (official site) and 8BitDo (official site) are examples of product categories, not universal recommendations. Controllers improve input, not emulation speed.
What PPSSPP Gold means
Current iOS presentation uses one PPSSPP app with an optional Gold in-app purchase; older coverage may describe separate free and Gold apps. The U.S. listing shows Gold at $3.99. Treat it primarily as a way to support development unless the current listing documents a specific additional feature. It does not provide games, remove copyright restrictions or add JIT to the App Store build. See PPSSPP’s news archive for current Gold information.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game does not appear
- Confirm the file is ISO, CSO or CHD and that any unsupported archive has been extracted.
- Use PPSSPP’s Games tab to navigate to the actual destination folder.
- Check that the Wi-Fi upload completed.
- Rescan or restart PPSSPP.
- Try a known-good homebrew title to separate a file problem from an app problem.
- Files left only in iCloud Drive or the Files app may not be in PPSSPP’s accessible storage; copy them into the app’s storage.
Touch input is frustrating
Pair a Bluetooth controller, connect a USB-C pad, use a clip-on controller, or customize the on-screen layout for the individual game.
The reader expects PS1 support
PPSSPP is a PSP emulator, not a general PlayStation emulator. Some PSP releases include or support PS1 content, but PPSSPP is not a replacement for a dedicated PS1 emulator or universal retro front end.
PPSSPP versus alternatives
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PPSSPP | Dedicated PSP emulation, graphics controls and a focused interface | Manual game-file transfer; no JIT in the App Store build |
| RetroArch | One multi-system front end, including PSP through the appropriate core | More menus, cores and configuration choices |
| Delta | Nintendo-focused emulation | Not a direct PSP alternative |
| Sideloaded PPSSPP | Advanced users seeking experimental or JIT-related options | Unofficial setup, added complexity and risk |
For iPhone or iPad owners whose target is PSP, PPSSPP is the most direct App Store choice—provided they bring legally obtained game files and accept the App Store build’s hardware-input and JIT limits.
