The quickest check is Steam’s Downloads page. A game listed as downloading, queued, or paused has an unfinished update. If it is not listed, check the game’s update settings and patch notes before assuming the installed build is current.
Check Steam’s Downloads page
- Open Steam and sign in while online.
- Open Downloads from the client’s download indicator or menu.
- Find the game in the active or queued list.
- Read its status. Downloading means the update is transferring; Queued means Steam has detected it but has not started; Paused means it needs to be resumed.
- Select the entry to resume it or prioritize it if those controls are available.
Steam’s Downloads interface can identify whether an item is game content, downloadable content, Workshop content, or shader pre-caching. A download for the game therefore does not always mean a gameplay patch. Valve describes the interface and its update-content indicators at Steam’s Downloads announcement.

If the game is absent from the active queue, Steam is not currently showing an unfinished download. That alone does not prove the newest build is installed: an update may be delayed, assigned to another branch, or configured to start when the game launches.
Check the game’s update setting
In the current Steam client, open Library, right-click the game (or open its gear menu), and choose Properties. Look for the update-related setting. Depending on your client version, operating system, language, and beta participation, the choices may include letting Steam decide when to update or updating when the game is launched. Valve documents global and per-game update controls in its Steam client update announcement.

Interface labels are not guaranteed to be identical on desktop Steam, Steam Deck Gaming Mode, Steam Deck Desktop Mode, macOS, and Linux.
Confirm that the update finished
- The game is no longer active or queued in Downloads.
- Its download entry shows completion rather than paused or pending work.
- Launching it does not trigger another download or an “update required” message.
- The game’s title screen, launcher, executable properties, or patch notes may show a new version number.
Not every game displays a visible version number, so do not treat its absence as evidence that the game failed to update.

- Open the game’s Steam Patch Notes, News, or developer-announcement area.
- Check the game’s Steam Community announcements.
- Read the developer or publisher’s official website or social account.
- Compare the game’s displayed version or in-game changelog, if it provides one.
The Downloads page can describe the type of content being processed, but it is not a complete changelog. Valve explains how update entries connect with relevant information in its Downloads documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Force Steam to check again
- Close the game completely.
- Open Downloads and resume any paused item.
- Restart the Steam client.
- Return to the game’s Library page and start any available update manually.
- If no update appears, recheck the game’s update setting and beta branch.
Restarting refreshes Steam’s connection and local update state. It cannot install a patch that the developer has not released to your branch or that Steam’s content servers have not made available.
What “Verify Integrity of Game Files” does
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Verification compares your local installation with Steam’s expected files and can reacquire missing or corrupted data. It is a repair operation, not a general “get the newest patch” command. A successful verification does not establish that a newer developer build exists, that you are on the intended branch, or that a server-side rollout has reached you. See Valve’s file-verification support page.

Why a game may not update immediately
- The game is set to update on launch or has a per-game exception.
- The download is queued, paused, scheduled, or restricted while another game is running.
- Steam is offline or experiencing a connection, content-server, or cache problem.
- You selected an optional beta, preview, or developer branch.
- The update is available on one platform or branch but not another.
- The developer has staged, delayed, or rolled back the release.
- Steam is allocating disk space or writing files; network speed can be near zero during this work.
- The library drive lacks free space or has a permissions problem.
- Antivirus, firewall, or other security software is blocking Steam.
- The game uses a separate publisher launcher with its own updater.
Valve describes update timing factors and per-game exceptions in its Steam client update notes. Disk allocation and installation work can also appear separately from network transfer in Steam’s download progress.
Fix a game that will not update
- Restart Steam and confirm it is online.
- Resume or prioritize the game in Downloads.
- Check free space on the Steam library drive.
- Clear Steam’s download cache.
- Use Steam’s option to repair the affected library folder, if shown.
- Change the download region and retry.
- Verify the game’s files using Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Check firewall, antivirus, and other security software for blocked Steam processes.
- Try another network if the problem appears connection-related.
- Restart the computer. If only this game remains affected, contact its developer.
Valve’s troubleshooting material covers restarting Steam, cache clearing, library repair, download-region changes, and file verification in its update and installation guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the game says it needs an update but Steam says it is current
- Restart Steam and inspect Downloads again.
- Launch the game once in case its setting requires a launch-time update.
- Check for a separate publisher or platform launcher.
- Open Properties and confirm the selected beta branch.
- Verify the installed files.
- Restart the computer and check storage and the library drive.
Different branches can contain different builds, and a game’s server maintenance or online-service problem can look like a missing local patch. Valve lists corrupted files, operating-system and driver issues, incompatible software, and platform-specific problems among common launch failures in its troubleshooting guidance.

Steam Deck, macOS, and Linux
The same diagnostic order applies: open Downloads, inspect the game’s Library properties, check its branch and update behavior, then verify files if needed. Steam Deck’s Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode can place controls differently, while macOS and Linux have different launchers, permissions, drivers, and file locations. Avoid applying Windows-only folder instructions to those platforms.
Important distinctions
| What you observe | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Game appears as downloading or queued | Steam has detected unfinished work. |
| Game is absent from Downloads | No active queue entry is shown; it does not prove the newest branch build is installed. |
| Verification completes successfully | Local files match Steam’s expected installation state; it does not prove a new patch exists. |
| Steam downloads something for the game | The item may be game content, DLC, Workshop content, or shader pre-caching. |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I manually update a Steam game?
Open Steam’s Downloads page, select the game’s queued or paused entry, and choose the available resume, download, or prioritize control. If no entry appears, check the game’s Properties for its update behavior and launch the game once if updates are configured for launch.
How do I check whether I am on a beta branch?
Open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and inspect its beta or branch setting. Select the default/public branch if you need to compare with the standard release.

Does offline mode prevent updates?
Offline Mode cannot discover or download new patches. Valve’s instructions say games should be fully updated and launched once before going offline; see Steam’s Offline Mode guidance.
Why is Steam downloading a game when I did not start an update?
The download may be DLC, Workshop content, shader pre-caching, or another queued item rather than a gameplay patch. Check the content type shown in Downloads.
The Bottom Line
Use Downloads to see whether Steam has unfinished work, Properties to check update and branch settings, and patch notes to learn what changed. Reserve file verification and cache or library repairs for cases where the expected update or launch behavior still fails.
