Verdict: the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is the better all-round choice for ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, creator software, efficiency and newer features. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX remains faster in native rasterized games and offers 24GB of VRAM. Buy the Radeon when it is substantially cheaper; at similar prices, the RTX 5070 Ti is the safer recommendation.

These cards are not separated by a simple “new versus old” rule. The RTX 5070 Ti is a newer Blackwell card positioned below the RTX 5080, while the RX 7900 XTX was AMD’s RDNA 3 flagship launched in December 2022. The real choice is native raster performance and memory capacity versus ray tracing, software features, efficiency and platform support.

Quick verdict

Category Winner Why Qualification
Native rasterization RX 7900 XTX About 3–5% ahead in Tom’s Hardware’s 11-game suite Geometric means, not a guarantee for every title
Ray tracing RTX 5070 Ti Roughly 28–34% faster in the cited test suite Path tracing still requires aggressive settings and upscaling
Upscaling and frame generation RTX 5070 Ti DLSS 4, Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation Generated frames are not the same as rendered frames
VRAM RX 7900 XTX 24GB versus 16GB Capacity does not guarantee higher FPS
Power efficiency RTX 5070 Ti 300W reference graphics power versus approximately 355W Partner-board figures vary
Streaming and creator software RTX 5070 Ti CUDA, NVENC, NVIDIA Studio and broad application support Workload and software compatibility still matter

Gaming performance

Native rasterization

The RX 7900 XTX has a modest lead when ray tracing is disabled: approximately 4% at 1080p, 5% at 1440p and 3% at 4K in Tom’s Hardware’s current suite. That is a real advantage for conventional games, but not a class-wide separation. API, engine, drivers, CPU limits and settings can reverse individual results.

Ray tracing and path tracing

The RTX 5070 Ti is decisively faster with ray-traced effects. The cited results translate to an approximately 28–34% advantage depending on resolution. This matters in games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, Black Myth: Wukong, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and GTA V Enhanced. Ordinary RT and full path tracing are different workloads: even the faster card may need lower settings, upscaling and frame generation for path-traced 4K.

Upscaling and generated frames

NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti supports DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Reflex 2 features, Broadcast, Studio support and NVENC. Current tested-game coverage gives DLSS 4 a broader presence than AMD’s FSR 4.x ecosystem, although support changes by title. NVIDIA’s feature list documents the supported technologies.

Frame generation increases displayed frame rate by creating intermediate frames; it does not replace a healthy base render rate. It can add artifacts and affect latency. Compare native or upscaled base FPS separately from generated/displayed FPS, and use Reflex or the game’s latency controls where available.

VRAM, 4K and longevity

The RX 7900 XTX’s 24GB of GDDR6 provides 50% more capacity than the RTX 5070 Ti’s 16GB of GDDR7. That headroom is useful for 4K texture packs, heavily modded games, large open worlds and some local AI or professional workloads that fit in memory. A game can stutter or stream textures poorly when its practical VRAM requirement is exceeded even if average FPS looks strong.

Capacity is not the same as speed or architecture. The RTX card’s newer memory subsystem, DLSS and frame-generation support can make it faster in supported games despite having less VRAM. Conversely, 16GB is a workable current gaming capacity but leaves less room for demanding future textures; 24GB is a durability advantage, not a guarantee of long-term superiority.

Resolution-specific advice

1080p

Neither is an especially rational new 1080p purchase unless you target very high refresh rates, CPU-heavy competitive games or demanding RT. CPU bottlenecks reduce the value of the small raster gap, while a cheaper current-generation card may deliver better value.

1440p

This is the easiest target for the RTX 5070 Ti. Both cards provide high-end performance; the Radeon has a small native lead, while the GeForce has a much larger RT and upscaling advantage. Sixteen gigabytes is generally more comfortable here than in heavily modded 4K.

4K

Choose according to workload. The RX 7900 XTX combines a small raster lead with 24GB, making it attractive for conventional 4K and large texture packs. The RTX 5070 Ti is stronger for RT, DLSS and frame generation, which can outweigh its lower native score in demanding modern titles.

Power, cooling and compatibility

NVIDIA specifies 300W graphics power and a 750W system recommendation for the RTX 5070 Ti. AMD reference information commonly lists approximately 355W board power and an 800W PSU recommendation for the RX 7900 XTX. A quality 750W unit can suit the GeForce, while an 800W-class quality PSU is the safer baseline for the Radeon; CPU choice, overclocking and the exact board can change either recommendation.

  • Check card length, slot thickness and radiator or front-fan clearance.
  • Confirm connector location and cable clearance, especially on RTX 5070 Ti models using a 12V-2×6/PCIe Gen 5 connection or adapter.
  • Expect the Radeon’s higher power draw to demand more airflow and potentially produce more heat and noise.
  • Read the board-partner warranty, return policy and BIOS power limits before buying.

Streaming, content creation and AI

The RTX 5070 Ti is the safer choice for CUDA-dependent applications, NVIDIA-optimized Adobe and creator tools, NVENC streaming and exports, OptiX, DLSS integrations and NVIDIA Studio workflows. Its dual ninth-generation NVENC encoders and AV1 support are listed by NVIDIA.

The RX 7900 XTX remains suitable for ordinary gaming and streaming, AV1-capable workflows, vendor-neutral or open-source tools and workloads where 24GB matters more than CUDA compatibility. There is no universal “best AI GPU”: framework, operating system, backend, driver and application support determine the result.

Price determines the recommendation

Tom’s Hardware lists launch MSRPs of $749.99 for the RTX 5070 Ti and $999.99 for the RX 7900 XTX, but those are historical reference points, not buying advice. GPU pricing has remained volatile; Tom’s Hardware’s pricing report documents the wider market context.

On August 14, 2026, PC Gamer reported RTX 5070 Ti examples around $1,029.99 at Newegg, $1,049.99 at Amazon, $949.97 at Walmart and $1,049.99 at Best Buy, and described them as significantly above the $749 MSRP. Those are dated examples, not a current guarantee; check stock, seller, warranty and model on the day you buy at PC Gamer’s price watch and retailers.

No reliable current RX 7900 XTX street price is established here, so do not assume it is cheaper. Compare actual prices for the exact cards, then account for a stronger PSU, case airflow and electricity costs. If an RTX 5070 Ti is near $1,000 while a warranted RX 7900 XTX is around $700–$800, the Radeon’s raster and VRAM value become compelling. If prices are close, the GeForce’s feature set is worth prioritizing.

Who should buy each GPU?

Buy the RTX 5070 Ti when:

  • You play RT- or path-traced games.
  • You want DLSS, Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.
  • You stream, edit video or use CUDA/NVIDIA-specific software.
  • You prefer lower graphics power and a newer platform.
  • The RX 7900 XTX is not meaningfully cheaper.

Buy the RX 7900 XTX when:

  • You play primarily rasterized games with RT disabled.
  • You need 24GB for mods, textures or a VRAM-heavy workload.
  • You want maximum native 4K performance per dollar.
  • You already have a suitable high-wattage PSU and large case.
  • It is substantially below the RTX 5070 Ti in verified street price.

Alternatives worth checking

The Radeon RX 9070 XT is the most important new AMD alternative: Tom’s Hardware places it close to the RTX 5070 Ti in raster performance and below it in RT, while PC Gamer reported August 2026 examples around $719.99–$739.99 against a $599.99 listed MSRP. See AMD’s product page at https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-9070-xt. A discounted RTX 5080 becomes relevant if its price gap narrows, and a used RTX 4080 Super can suit buyers who want NVIDIA features and 16GB. A used RX 7900 XTX may be attractive only with acceptable condition, warranty and return protection. Buyers who do not need flagship performance should also price lower-tier current-generation cards.

Final buying rule

At similar prices, choose the RTX 5070 Ti for the stronger overall feature set, ray tracing, DLSS, creator support and efficiency. Choose the RX 7900 XTX when it is clearly cheaper and your priority is native 4K raster gaming, mods or 24GB of VRAM. Do not buy either at an inflated price without checking the RX 9070 XT and other current alternatives first.
