Usually, you cannot play a PS3 on a laptop by plugging an HDMI cable directly into the laptop. Most laptop HDMI ports are outputs, designed to send the laptop’s picture to a television or monitor. To show PS3 video on the laptop, use a USB HDMI capture device and viewing software such as OBS Studio—or verify that your exact laptop has a documented HDMI input.
First, check whether your laptop has HDMI input
An HDMI connector can look identical whether it sends or receives video. Check the exact laptop model’s manual and specifications for the words HDMI input. A port labeled only “HDMI” should be treated as output unless the manufacturer explicitly documents an input mode.
- HDMI output: sends the laptop display to an external screen.
- HDMI input: receives video from a PS3, camera or other source.
Windows “Duplicate” and “Extend” settings cannot turn an output into an input. USB-to-HDMI display adapters are generally outputs too; they are not capture devices. Sony documents HDMI-input operation on some specialized computers, including a switch between PC and HDMI modes, but this is an exception rather than the normal laptop configuration: Sony HDMI-input support information.
The practical method: use a USB HDMI capture device
A capture device converts the PS3’s HDMI signal into a USB video source that the laptop can display, record or stream.

What you need
- PlayStation 3 and a working HDMI cable.
- An external capture device with HDMI IN, USB connection and preferably UVC support or drivers for your operating system.
- A laptop with a compatible USB port.
- OBS Studio or the capture manufacturer’s viewing software.
- Optional: a capture card with HDMI passthrough, a second HDMI cable and a TV or monitor.
Buy by compatibility rather than by “4K” branding. The PS3 is a 720p/1080p-era source, so input-format support, audio capture, HDCP behavior, USB reliability and latency matter more than modern 4K, HDR or VRR features. AVerMedia’s current capture-card range is one place to compare supported products: AVerMedia capture cards. Avoid assuming that an unbranded, very cheap dongle will provide reliable audio or PS3 compatibility.
Connection layout
PS3 HDMI OUT → Capture device HDMI IN → USB → Laptop
If the capture device has passthrough, connect Capture HDMI OUT → TV or monitor HDMI IN. The display then receives a direct signal for play, while the laptop receives a second feed for recording or streaming.
Connect the hardware
- Turn off the PS3 and laptop.
- Connect the cable from the PS3’s HDMI OUT to the capture device’s HDMI IN. Do not connect to the capture device’s output.
- Connect the capture device to the laptop with its USB cable.
- If using passthrough, connect the capture device’s HDMI OUT to the television or monitor.
- Turn on the PS3, then the laptop. Install the manufacturer’s driver or software if required.
Configure OBS Studio
OBS identifies console hardware as a video-capture source. Its documented workflow is to add the device as a Video Capture Device: OBS console-capture FAQ.

- Select the capture device from the device list.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by both the PS3 output and the capture device.
- Confirm that video appears in the preview.
- Check the source properties and OBS audio mixer for audio from the capture device.
The OBS preview is suitable for menus, casual play and troubleshooting, but it is not necessarily a zero-latency monitor. For timing-sensitive games, play from the passthrough display instead.
Using a laptop with genuine HDMI input
If the laptop manual explicitly confirms HDMI input, connect PS3 HDMI OUT → Laptop HDMI IN, then select the computer’s HDMI-input mode using the manufacturer’s utility, button or input selector. Verify that the model supports the PS3’s signal and HDCP requirements. A socket’s physical appearance is not proof that this method is available.
Set the PS3’s video output
The PS3 can output HDMI video at modes including 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p in NTSC regions; 576p is also available in PAL regions. The receiving device must support the selected mode. Sony’s PS3 video-output documentation also explains the HDMI and HDCP requirements.

After changing displays, a resolution mismatch can leave the screen blank. Reset the output as follows:
- Turn the PS3 off completely.
- Press and hold the front power button while turning it on.
- Keep holding until the second beep (about five seconds), then release.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable to the capture device and allow the PS3 to renegotiate a supported mode.
Fix missing audio
PS3 HDMI audio can include two-channel, 5.1-channel or 7.1-channel formats depending on the equipment and selected settings: Sony PS3 audio-output documentation.

The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
HDCP and Blu-ray limitations
Sony states that an HDMI-connected device must support HDCP or the PS3 may output neither video nor audio. This can produce a black screen even when the wiring is correct. A capture card that works with another console is not automatically guaranteed to work with a PS3.
Protected Blu-ray playback has especially strict requirements; Sony specifies an HDCP-compatible HDMI connection for protected 1080p output. Capture hardware therefore is not a guaranteed method for watching protected discs on a laptop. Do not assume that a splitter will remove HDCP or that every game signal will behave identically across capture devices.

| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when the PS3 is connected directly to the laptop | Laptop HDMI is output-only | Use a documented HDMI-in laptop or a USB capture device. |
| Capture device is missing in OBS | USB, driver or software conflict | Connect to a different USB port directly, install required drivers, close other camera software, reconnect the device and restart OBS. |
| Black screen or “no signal” | HDCP, unsupported resolution, cable fault or reversed HDMI connection | Test the PS3 on a known-compatible display, reset video output, try 720p or 480p, replace the cable and reconnect HDMI OUT to HDMI IN. |
| Video works but audio does not | Wrong OBS source, PS3 audio routing or weak capture-card audio support | Select capture audio in OBS, verify mixer activity and choose HDMI audio output on the PS3. |
| Preview feels delayed | USB capture and software processing | Use HDMI passthrough to a TV or monitor, reduce unnecessary processing and use a suitable USB connection. |
| Audio and video are out of sync | Different buffering paths | Use the capture device’s native audio path, avoid unnecessary monitoring and adjust OBS sync only after confirming the delay. |
If HDMI capture still fails, test another USB port and capture application, check the manufacturer’s supported-resolution table, and consider PS3 component or composite output with a compatible capture device.

Which option makes sense?
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Documented HDMI-in laptop | Owners of the uncommon models that support it | No capture card, but model-specific software, latency and HDCP compatibility still apply. |
| Basic USB capture device | Showing the PS3 in OBS at the lowest hardware cost | May have latency, weak audio, driver problems or HDCP incompatibility. |
| Capture card with HDMI passthrough | Playing on a display while recording or streaming on the laptop | Costs more and requires another display and cable; laptop preview can still lag. |
| Used 1080p monitor or small TV | Playing only, without recording or streaming | Requires physical space but is usually simpler, cheaper and lower-latency. |
For example, Elgato’s HD60 X lists HDMI input, passthrough, USB connectivity and 1080p60 capture, but its product page currently marks it discontinued while showing a $179.99 price signal. Treat it as an example of features, not an automatic purchase recommendation: Elgato HD60 X and technical specifications.
If the goal is simply to play, a used HDMI monitor or small TV is often better value than a capture setup. Choose a current, supported USB capture card when recording, streaming or laptop-based viewing is the priority, and verify its PS3 input formats, audio behavior, HDCP handling and operating-system support before buying.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A normal laptop HDMI port will not accept a PS3 signal. Use a USB HDMI capture device with OBS, or confirm that the exact laptop has HDMI input. Expect some software-preview latency and possible HDCP or resolution issues; for the simplest, lowest-latency playing experience, use a TV or standalone monitor.
