For the most reliable setup, connect the controller by USB, confirm that Windows and Steam detect it, then set Steam Input per game rather than globally. In Steam, open Library → game → Properties → Controller and start with Use Default Settings. Choose Enable Steam Input when the game cannot recognize the controller or it uses DirectInput; choose Disable Steam Input when native support works better.
Steam supports most controllers that Windows can detect, including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Pro and DirectInput gamepads, but it cannot give full controller compatibility to every game. The game must accept the output Steam sends, and anti-cheat, external launchers or a missing Steam Overlay can prevent emulation.
The fastest setup method
- Close the game and connect the controller directly to the PC with a USB data cable. Avoid hubs while troubleshooting.
- Check that Windows detects it. If it does not, try another cable or USB port before changing Steam settings.
- Open Steam → Settings → Controller. Find the device under detected or external gamepads and open Steam’s test or configuration view.
- In Library, select the game, open its controller-configuration button or Properties → Controller, and leave it at Use Default Settings for the first test.
- Launch the game from Steam. Press Shift+Tab to verify that the Steam Overlay opens, then test movement, buttons and triggers.
If USB works, configure Bluetooth afterward. Put the controller into its manufacturer-specified pairing mode, open Windows Bluetooth settings, select it and reconnect or restart Steam if it is not detected. Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and third-party controllers use different pairing procedures; there is no universal shortcut. Microsoft’s Windows guidance covers wired and Bluetooth game-input devices: Windows controller connection guidance.
What Steam Input actually does
Steam Input is a translation and remapping layer. It can pass through native gamepad signals, emulate an Xbox-style XInput pad, turn buttons into keyboard keys, turn sticks or trackpads into mouse movement, combine gamepad and keyboard commands, and load game-specific or community layouts.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
There are four materially different situations:
- Native support: the game reads the physical controller directly.
- Steam Input API support: the game uses Valve’s controller integration.
- Steam Input emulation: Steam creates virtual gamepad or keyboard/mouse output.
- No controller support: a keyboard-and-mouse layout may still work, but it cannot create a fully designed controller interface.
Valve notes that gamepad-only bindings work only in games that accept gamepad input; keyboard and mouse bindings are required for games that do not. See Steam Input emulation guidance and Steam’s controller configuration support page.
Choose Steam Input for each game
Open Library → select the game → Properties → Controller. Steam may show slightly different wording as the client changes, but the choices have the same purpose:
| Setting | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Use Default Settings | You are unsure, or the game has a normal controller profile. | Steam and the game choose the most suitable path. |
| Enable Steam Input | The game does not see the controller, the device is DirectInput/generic, or you need remapping. | May cause Xbox prompts, duplicate input, loss of native features or anti-cheat conflicts. |
| Disable Steam Input | The game has strong native support or conflicts with a virtual controller. | Generic and PlayStation/Switch devices may no longer be recognized. |
Relaunch the game after changing this setting. Per-game choices are safer than forcing one global mode: an Xbox pad may work best natively in one title while a generic or PlayStation controller needs Steam Input in another.

Build a working layout
- Open the game’s controller configuration editor.
- Start with the standard Gamepad template.
- Use Gamepad with Camera Controls when camera movement needs mouse-like behavior.
- Use Keyboard and Mouse only when the game lacks usable gamepad support.
- Try a community layout if the official template is incomplete, then save a custom layout for this game.
A physical-button binding describes what the real button does; an in-game action is the command sent to the title. Input styles define behavior such as joystick, mouse region, radial menu or directional pad. Action sets and layers can provide alternate controls for vehicles, menus or inventory screens.

For unusual devices, map only the controls you need first. Arcade sticks, wheels and flight sticks may be DirectInput or specialized HID devices and often need a custom layout instead of a standard gamepad template.
Controller-specific guidance
| Controller | Best starting point | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One/Series | Native XInput or Default Settings | Disable Steam Input if it conflicts with a game’s native support. |
| DualShock 4 | Steam Input for broad compatibility | Some games still display Xbox prompts. |
| DualSense | Native support where available; otherwise Steam Input | Adaptive triggers and advanced haptics are game- and connection-dependent. |
| Switch Pro | Usually Steam Input | Physical A/B and X/Y positions differ from Xbox; gyro and rumble require suitable bindings. |
| 8BitDo | Use its XInput mode when available | Its physical mode changes how Steam and games identify it. |
| Generic USB pad | Steam Input or generic-controller support | Cheap or defective devices may expose incomplete axes or triggers. |
Steam’s supported-device documentation includes Xbox, PlayStation 3/4, Switch Pro and any DirectInput gamepad, while specialized hardware can still require custom setup: Steam supported devices.

Button prompts are not a compatibility test
A PlayStation or Nintendo controller can work while a game shows Xbox letters. Steam Input often presents an Xbox-style virtual controller because many PC games are built around XInput. Some games choose artwork from the virtual device rather than the physical one. Follow the displayed labels or change the game’s prompt option when available; remapping cannot guarantee matching artwork.
Use Steam Input with a non-Steam game
- Select Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- Choose the game’s executable or launcher and add it.
- Open its controller properties and choose Default, Enable or Disable Steam Input.
- Launch the program from Steam, not independently.
- Test Shift+Tab. If the Overlay cannot open, game-specific Steam Input may not apply.
External launchers such as Ubisoft Connect, EA app, Rockstar or Epic can interfere with Overlay injection. Administrator privileges can also create mismatched permissions. Anti-cheat may block virtual or emulated input. Steam documents these limitations at Non-Steam game and Overlay support.
Fix problems by symptom
Steam or Windows does not detect it
- Disconnect and reconnect it.
- Try a known-good USB data cable and a direct USB port.
- Restart Steam, then Windows.
- For Bluetooth, remove the device in Windows and pair it again.
- Install firmware only with the controller manufacturer’s official utility.
- Check the controller’s mode: XInput is usually simplest for Windows; DirectInput may require Steam Input.
- Disconnect other controllers and test the device in Windows before returning to Steam.
Steam detects it, but the game does not
- Try Enable Steam Input, relaunch and use a standard gamepad layout.
- If that fails, try Disable Steam Input and relaunch.
- Confirm the game supports controllers and check its own input menu.
- Test the Overlay with Shift+Tab.
- Close third-party overlays, remappers and external launchers where possible.
Steam identifies conflicting software, XInput emulators, overlays and multiple devices as common causes: Steam input troubleshooting.

Buttons are wrong
- Check whether the controller is in Nintendo rather than Xbox mode.
- Return to the default gamepad template.
- Make sure the layout was not made for another controller.
- Use either native input or Steam Input, not both, and close other remappers.
- Remap only the incorrect controls and save the layout for that game.
Inputs happen twice
Close DS4Windows, reWASD, BetterJoy and similar tools; disconnect extra controllers; then test Steam Input alone enabled and alone disabled. Duplicate menu movement or keyboard-plus-controller actions usually mean the game sees both physical and virtual devices.
The Overlay or controller stops working
- Quit the game completely.
- Return to Properties → Controller → Use Default Settings.
- Reconnect the controller and restart Steam.
- Load a basic official or community gamepad layout.
- Enable Steam Overlay in Steam’s in-game settings and retest with Shift+Tab.
Valve describes the Overlay as important to Steam Controller functionality: Overlay troubleshooting.
Anti-cheat blocks it
Do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat. Use the controller’s native XInput mode, disable Steam Input if the game supports the physical device, and follow the developer’s official guidance.

Native support versus Steam Input
Choose native support when the game officially recognizes the controller, shows suitable prompts, needs adaptive triggers, motion or advanced rumble, or uses anti-cheat that may reject virtual input. Choose Steam Input for unrecognized DirectInput devices, custom accessibility mappings, mixed keyboard/gamepad controls, or games without useful native support. A third-party remapper is an alternative only when Steam Input cannot work, such as a non-Steam title without Overlay support; never stack remappers on top of Steam Input.
Platform notes and edge cases
- Partial Controller Support: Steam’s label can mean that launchers, text entry, editors or occasional menus still require a keyboard or mouse. See Valve’s controller-support explanation.
- Multiple controllers: Disconnect all but one while troubleshooting; games can prioritize a device or player slot.
- Motion controls: A sensor does nothing unless Steam Input and the game layout bind it.
- macOS and Linux: Pairing, permissions and device behavior differ. macOS may require Input Monitoring or Accessibility permissions; consult Steam’s platform support notes.
- Steam Deck: It relies heavily on Steam Input, but its menus and controls are not identical to desktop Steam.
If you are buying a controller for Steam
An Xbox Wireless Controller is usually the lowest-friction choice because XInput is widely accepted. Official page: Xbox Wireless Controller. A DualSense suits PlayStation owners and games with native DualSense features, but not every game supports its advanced hardware: DualSense. A Switch Pro offers Nintendo ergonomics and motion controls but may need Steam Input and may show Xbox prompts: Switch Pro Controller. 8BitDo models can provide several input modes, so check the exact model and firmware at 8BitDo’s official site. A replacement data cable is often a better first purchase than a remapping utility; Steam Input itself is built in and free.
Quick Recap
The decision tree
- Windows cannot see it: fix cable, port, Bluetooth pairing, mode or firmware first.
- Steam cannot see it: restart Steam, remove other devices and confirm the controller mode.
- Xbox controller plus native game support: use Default or Disable Steam Input.
- PlayStation, Switch or generic controller without native support: enable Steam Input and start with Gamepad.
- Duplicate input: close other remappers and test one input path at a time.
- Anti-cheat rejects virtual input: use native XInput or disable Steam Input.
- No controller support at all: use a keyboard/mouse layout, understanding that the experience may be incomplete.
