Slow Wi-Fi on a Lenovo Legion Go does not automatically mean the wireless chip is defective. First check whether other devices are slow on the same network and whether the Go performs better on a phone hotspot. Then work through the least disruptive fixes: reconnect, test another Wi-Fi band, install the driver for your exact model, and adjust power settings before resetting Windows networking.

These steps are aimed mainly at the original Legion Go 8APU1 running Windows 11. Legion Go S and other variants may use different wireless hardware, so do not install a driver intended for another model.

First, find out whether the Go, router, or game launcher is slow

“Slow Wi-Fi” can mean low download speed, high latency, packet loss, disconnections, or a connection that says it has no internet. Those symptoms can have different causes. A game download can also appear slow because of a launcher’s content server, a VPN, disk writes, or game-file decompression—not the wireless link.

  1. Connect a phone or laptop to the same Wi-Fi network, in roughly the same spot as the Legion Go, and compare results using the same speed-test service.
  2. Test the Go near the router, then connect it to a phone hotspot. If your router has separate network names, test 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately.
  3. Compare a browser speed test with the download in Steam, Xbox, or another launcher. Pause other downloads, Windows Update, OneDrive, VPN software, and other background traffic while testing.
  4. If you are comfortable with Command Prompt, open it and run ipconfig. Find the Default Gateway address, then run ping <default-gateway> using that address in place of the example. Repeat the test and compare with another device; one ping result alone does not establish a fault.

Fix 1: Forget the Wi-Fi network and restart the router

A saved network profile or a stale connection can sometimes cause trouble. Forgetting the network makes Windows negotiate a new connection; restarting the router also clears temporary router-side problems.

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
  2. Select the affected network and choose Forget.
  3. Unplug the router and, if it is a separate device, the modem. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Power on the modem first and wait for it to reconnect. Then power on the router.
  5. Reconnect the Legion Go to Wi-Fi and enter the password again.

If the router uses one network name for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz, temporarily separating the bands in its settings can help you identify which one the Go is using. Avoid drawing conclusions from a hotel or public network that requires a captive-portal login; isolate the issue on a network you control first. If the router itself reboots when a large download starts, investigate the router or its compatibility rather than treating this as only a slow-client problem.

Microsoft documents forgetting and reconnecting to a network and power-cycling a modem and router as troubleshooting steps in its Windows Wi-Fi guide.

Fix 2: Test 5 GHz instead of assuming 2.4 GHz or 6 GHz is best

Try the router’s 5 GHz network first, especially if the Go is on 2.4 GHz and you are close enough to the router. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther but is often more congested; 5 GHz can offer a better practical balance of speed, range, and compatibility. A 6 GHz connection can be fast in suitable conditions, but it needs compatible equipment and can perform worse through distance or walls. A stable 5 GHz signal may be the better choice for a handheld used away from the router.

  1. If the router shows separate network names, connect to its 5 GHz network and compare speed, latency, and stability with the other band.
  2. If 6 GHz is unstable or unavailable, test 5 GHz instead.
  3. On some driver versions, you can open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter, choose Properties > Advanced, and test Preferred Band or a similarly named setting. Choose Prefer 5 GHz only if the option is available.

Adapter setting names and values vary by driver. Record the original setting before changing it, and use band selection as a controlled test rather than forcing 802.11ax or a particular channel. Microsoft also recommends trying another band when troubleshooting: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.

Fix 3: Install the WLAN driver for your exact Legion Go model

A driver can be outdated, damaged, or mismatched. The original Legion Go 8APU1 is specified with an AMD Wi-Fi 6E RZ616 adapter and 802.11ax 2×2 wireless, but that does not mean every Legion Go variant uses the same WLAN package. Lenovo lists products and drivers by model, so check the device before installing anything.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters and note the exact wireless adapter name.
  3. Identify the Legion Go’s model or machine type.
  4. Open Lenovo Support, select the exact product, then open Drivers & Software and choose Windows 11 64-bit.
  5. Download the WLAN or wireless LAN driver, close games and other applications, run the installer, and restart the Go.

For the original 8APU1, Lenovo’s WLAN driver page is MediaTek WLAN Driver for Windows 11 64-bit — Legion Go 8APU1. The page’s indexed listing identifies version 24.34.2.571, released October 11, 2024; that is a dated listing, not a claim that it is the latest driver now. Check Lenovo’s current page for the package offered for your model.

Do not substitute a Legion Go S driver, a generic MediaTek package from an unofficial site, or an AMD laptop driver just because the Legion Go uses an AMD processor. The Lenovo Legion Go 8APU1 specifications identify its wireless configuration. Wi-Fi 6E requires a compatible access point and operating-system support; capability alone does not guarantee better performance on 6 GHz.

Fix 4: Roll back a driver if the problem began after an update

If Wi-Fi became slower or less stable immediately after a driver update, test the previous driver before making unrelated changes.

  1. Open Device Manager > Network adapters.
  2. Right-click the wireless adapter and select Properties > Driver.
  3. Select Roll Back Driver if it is available, then restart and test the connection.

If rollback is unavailable, download the correct Lenovo driver before uninstalling the current one. Microsoft advises having a manufacturer’s driver available before removing a network adapter driver: Microsoft’s adapter troubleshooting guidance.

Fix 5: Test Wi-Fi power-saving settings

Power management is worth checking when the Go drops Wi-Fi after sleep, on battery, or intermittently. Changing it may improve stability, but it can also use more battery, so treat this as a test and restore the setting if it does not help.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter, and choose Properties.
  3. If there is a Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, select OK, and restart.

If drops continue, you can also test the active power plan’s wireless setting: open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options, open the plan’s advanced settings, expand Wireless Adapter Settings, and choose Maximum Performance while testing. The setting may not appear on every system. Microsoft includes adapter power management and maximum-performance wireless settings among its troubleshooting options: Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guide.

Fix 6: Reset the Windows network stack

Use these commands if the Go connects to Wi-Fi but has DNS failures, incorrect IP behavior, or unexplained “connected, no internet” states that remain after simpler fixes. They reset networking components and refresh the IP lease and DNS cache; they do not repair a damaged antenna, a faulty router, ISP congestion, or a slow game server.

  1. Search for Command Prompt from Start and select Run as administrator.
  2. Run these commands in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
  1. Restart the Legion Go, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and test again.

To inspect wireless capabilities, you can run netsh wlan show drivers. For details on the command and what it reports, see Microsoft’s Wi-Fi information for Windows. Microsoft also documents the reset commands in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

Fix 7: Reinstall the adapter, then use Network Reset only if needed

These are more disruptive software steps. Before uninstalling anything, save your current driver details and download the correct Lenovo WLAN driver to the Go or a USB drive.

Reinstall the wireless adapter

  1. Open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter, and select Uninstall device.
  2. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, use that option only if you already have the correct replacement driver available.
  3. Confirm the uninstall and restart Windows. If Windows does not restore the correct driver, install the Lenovo package you downloaded.

Microsoft describes uninstalling the adapter and restarting so Windows can reinstall it, and advises keeping the manufacturer’s driver available first: Microsoft’s adapter troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Network Reset as a last software step

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
  2. Select Reset now, confirm, and allow the Go to restart.
  3. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure any networking software that needs it.

Network Reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls them with defaults. It can require VPN clients, Hyper-V virtual switches, or other networking software to be configured again. Avoid starting with it if the Go works on a hotspot, the problem is isolated to a launcher, or other devices are also slow. Microsoft’s Network Reset guidance explains the reset and its effects.

If Wi-Fi is still slow, check for a hardware or compatibility problem

A defective internal adapter is possible, but slow results on one router are not enough to establish it. Before seeking repair, test the Go on more than one independent network, including a hotspot, and check whether the adapter is present in Device Manager after the correct Lenovo driver has been installed.

  • The adapter repeatedly disappears from Device Manager or shows errors after a clean, model-matched driver installation.
  • The Go remains slow or drops connection on multiple networks while other devices work normally in the same locations.
  • An external USB Wi-Fi adapter or USB-C Ethernet connection is consistently reliable where the internal adapter is not.

An external adapter is a workaround and diagnostic comparison, not proof by itself that the internal chip is defective; the cause could also involve its driver, antenna path, or router compatibility. If you can play near the router, USB-C Ethernet through a compatible adapter or dock can provide a wired connection for downloads or play, but it will not help when using the Go away from the dock. If hardware remains suspect, contact Lenovo Support before opening the device or installing unsupported drivers. A BIOS update is worth considering only when Lenovo’s instructions or release notes for the exact model address a relevant issue; it is not a general slow-Wi-Fi fix.

If the problem appears only when using Bluetooth accessories on 2.4 GHz, briefly test with Bluetooth off. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can share radio resources in that band, but disabling Bluetooth is not a universal solution. DNS changes may help name-resolution delays, but they do not normally improve the Wi-Fi link’s throughput.
