1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsually, you cannot connect a PS5 directly to a laptop with only an HDMI cable. The PS5 sends video through HDMI OUT, and most laptops with HDMI also have HDMI OUT rather than HDMI IN. Use PS Remote Play for a no-hardware solution, or route the console through a USB HDMI capture card for a genuine HDMI-to-laptop connection. A TV or monitor remains the best choice for the lowest latency and full high-refresh-rate features.
Why a normal PS5-to-laptop HDMI connection fails
HDMI ports have a direction. HDMI OUT sends video and audio away from a device; HDMI IN receives them. Sony’s PS5 setup connects the console’s HDMI OUT to a display’s HDMI IN (Sony PS5 support). On most laptops, the HDMI socket is also an output for an external monitor. Connecting two outputs therefore produces no picture.
A few specialized laptops do include HDMI input, but this is unusual. Check the exact manufacturer specifications for the words HDMI input or video input; the presence of an HDMI-shaped socket is not proof.
Direct connection that usually fails: PS5 HDMI OUT ─── HDMI cable ─── Laptop HDMI OUT Working capture-card connection: PS5 HDMI OUT ─── Capture Card HDMI IN Capture Card USB ─── Laptop USB Capture Card HDMI OUT ─── TV/monitor (optional)
A standard USB-to-HDMI display adapter is not a substitute. It normally adds another output to the laptop. Look specifically for a USB HDMI capture card.

Choose the right method
| Goal | Best method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Spend nothing on hardware | PS Remote Play | Uses Sony’s official app |
| Use the laptop temporarily | PS Remote Play | Fastest setup |
| Connect by HDMI | USB capture card | Receives the PS5 signal and sends it over USB |
| Record, stream, or share in Discord | USB capture card | Provides a video source to computer software |
| Lowest latency and best picture | TV or monitor | A direct HDMI display avoids network and preview processing |
| 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, or VRR | Compatible direct display or HDMI 2.1 capture setup | Every device, cable, port, and software setting must support the target format |
| Competitive gaming | TV/monitor, optionally with passthrough capture | Laptop previews can add delay |
Method 1: Use PS Remote Play
Remote Play streams the PS5 over your network to Windows or macOS. It is convenient for travel and casual or turn-based games, but it is not a direct HDMI signal. Fast competitive, rhythm, and precision-heavy games can feel less responsive.
Requirements
- Windows: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 100 MB storage, 2 GB RAM, 1024×768 display resolution or higher, a sound card, and a USB port.
- Mac: Sony’s current page lists macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe. Verify the live compatibility list before installing because supported versions can change.
- Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps recommended for best performance (PS5 support).
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- For starting from Rest Mode, open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Connect from the laptop
- Install the official PS Remote Play app.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Choose PS5 and follow the pairing instructions.
- Connect a DualSense controller to the laptop, preferably by USB while troubleshooting.
- Start the game in the Remote Play window.
Improve Remote Play performance
- Use Ethernet for the PS5 when possible.
- Use 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi for the laptop, stay near the router, and avoid guest networks or Wi-Fi extenders.
- Stop downloads and other bandwidth-heavy applications.
- Lower video quality or frame-rate settings in the app if the image stutters.
- If delay remains unacceptable, use a direct TV or monitor.
Method 2: Use an HDMI capture card
A capture card converts the PS5’s HDMI output into a USB video source that laptop software can display, record, or stream. It is the practical HDMI-based method.
What you need
- PS5 and HDMI cable
- External capture card with HDMI IN and USB connection
- Laptop with a compatible USB port
- Capture software such as Elgato Studio, OBS Studio, or another UVC-compatible application
- Optional second HDMI cable and TV/monitor for passthrough
Wire and configure it
- Turn off the PS5 and close capture software.
- Connect the PS5 HDMI cable to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the capture card directly to the laptop with its USB cable.
- For passthrough, connect HDMI OUT on the capture card to a TV or monitor.
- Turn on the PS5 and open the manufacturer app or OBS Studio.
- In OBS, choose Sources → Video Capture Device, select the card, and set a supported resolution and frame rate.
- Select the capture card as the audio source if audio is not automatic. Use Fullscreen Projector only after testing synchronization.
Elgato’s setup documentation shows this PS5-to-capture-card HDMI, capture-card-to-computer USB, and optional passthrough arrangement (Game Capture Neo setup; 4K X setup). OBS Studio is free at obsproject.com, but it is not required for every card.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Passthrough versus laptop preview
HDMI passthrough sends the console signal directly to a TV or monitor. Elgato describes the output on its current devices as lag-free passthrough (Game Capture Neo). The laptop preview is processed by USB and software and can add delay, so use passthrough for competitive play and the laptop for recording or streaming.
Capture-card specifications that matter
| Capability | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Capture resolution | 1080p60 is common for streaming; 4K60 capture requires a higher-end device |
| Passthrough | Check whether it supports 60, 120, or higher refresh rates separately from capture |
| HDMI standard | HDMI 2.1 is relevant to 4K/120-class PS5 setups |
| HDR and VRR | Confirm HDR10 and VRR support if your display uses them |
| USB bandwidth | Some high-end cards require USB 3.2 Gen 2; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee that speed |
| Operating system | Check Windows/Mac support and the exact laptop port |

Passthrough and capture are separate capabilities: a card may pass 4K120 to a display while sending only 1080p60 to the laptop. Actual results depend on the PS5 or PS5 Pro, game, cable, display, USB port, software, and selected format.
HDCP and capture-card black screens
With HDCP enabled, a capture card may show a black screen. Elgato instructs users to connect the PS5 directly to a TV or monitor, disable HDCP, and reconnect the capture device (HDCP support).

Stutter or delay
Use Ethernet, reduce network traffic for Remote Play, connect the card directly rather than through a hub, match resolution and frame rate, and use HDMI passthrough instead of the laptop preview when response time matters.
4K or 120 Hz is missing
Check HDMI 2.1 support end to end, the cable, display mode, USB generation, card passthrough limits, and software settings. Do not assume a “4K” label means 4K120 capture.
Controller does not respond
For Remote Play, pair the DualSense with the laptop (USB is the simplest test). With a capture card, the controller normally remains paired with the PS5; the card handles video and audio.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect my PS5 to my laptop with only HDMI?
Only if the laptop has a specifically documented HDMI input, which is uncommon. Otherwise use PS Remote Play or a USB HDMI capture card.
Is PS Remote Play free?
Sony’s Remote Play app does not require a separate capture-card purchase; you still need the PS5, laptop, controller, and a suitable network.
Does a capture card cause lag?
The laptop preview can add processing delay. HDMI passthrough lets you play on a directly connected TV or monitor while the laptop records or streams.
Can I use a MacBook as a PS5 monitor?
Yes, through the Mac version of PS Remote Play or a macOS-compatible USB capture card. Check current macOS and device requirements before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need a 4K capture card for PS5?
No. A 1080p60 card is sufficient for basic laptop viewing or streaming. Choose 4K/HDMI 2.1 hardware only for specific 4K, high-refresh, HDR, or VRR requirements.
