Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCivilization V is not automatically incompatible with Windows 11. For the Steam/Windows edition, start by launching from Steam’s Library and testing the game’s two official graphics modes. The separate Civ V launcher was removed from Steam’s launch flow on November 18, 2024, so current Steam installs expose DirectX 9, DirectX 10/11 and Touch choices instead. The desktop shortcut defaults to DirectX 9, which may not be the mode your system handles best.
Try the fixes below in order. They target the current launcher flow before making system-wide changes. GOG, Epic, Mac, Linux and nonstandard installations can use different files and procedures.

Before you start
- Close Civ V and Steam completely, then reopen Steam.
- Use the Steam Library rather than a desktop shortcut for your first tests.
- Note the symptom: no response, “Preparing to launch” followed by a close, a black screen, or an immediate crash.
- If you will change files in Documents, copy important saves first.
Fix 1: Choose the other DirectX mode in Steam
This is the least invasive fix and the one most directly related to the post-launcher-removal setup. Civilization Support says the current Steam choices are DirectX 9, DirectX 10/11 and Touch; desktop shortcuts default to DirectX 9 (Civilization Support).
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Sid Meier’s Civilization V and choose Properties.
- Remain on the General tab.
- Find the launch-option selector or setting that controls how the game starts.
- Choose Play Sid Meier’s Civilization V (DirectX 9), launch the game, and note the result.
- Repeat with Play Sid Meier’s Civilization V (DirectX 10/11).
Try DirectX 9 when DX10/11 crashes during graphics initialization. Try DX10/11 when DX9 gives a black screen, poor rendering or fails on your newer GPU or driver. Neither mode is universally better. Touch is intended for touch-oriented use and is not the normal desktop troubleshooting choice.

- Successful diplomacy will depend on players carefully managing relationships with other leaders
- Expanded visuals and immersive audio invite would-be kings to take up the reigns of power and forge a mighty empire
- An intuitive interface eases both new players and Civ veterans into the game
If Steam shows no choice, launch from the Library instead of the desktop shortcut and use the game’s Steam properties to select a mode. Do not assume a generic option such as -dxlevel is a Civ V fix; Valve’s documentation is general Steam guidance, not proof that the command applies to this game (Steam launch-options guidance).
Fix 2: Verify the installed files
A damaged or incomplete executable or data file can make Steam close immediately. 2K documents this verification path for Steam games (2K Steam troubleshooting).

- HUGE BATTLES: Wars between empires spread across land and sea. Ranged bombardment challenges you to develop clever strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield.
- DIPLOMACY: Negotiate with some of history’s most cunning rulers, each with a well-crafted plan for victory. City-states present a diplomatic battleground on which the major powers of the world will vie for supremacy.
- RELIGION: Cultivate Great Prophets and create a religion you can customize and enhance.
- ESPIONAGE: Send your spies into foreign cities for surveillance, to steal advanced technologies from your competitors, or to interfere with city-state alliances.
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Civ V and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam, and test the selected DirectX mode again.
Steam may reacquire files; that is expected. Verification normally does not remove saves, but it cannot repair a blocked executable, a broken Windows runtime, a corrupted user configuration or an incompatible overlay. If Steam reports no problems, continue rather than repeating verification indefinitely.
Fix 3: Run the bundled DirectX and Visual C++ installers
Windows 11 includes modern components, but older games can still need legacy runtime files. Steam notes that secondary installers may include DirectX, PhysX, Games for Windows Live, Visual C++ components and required updates (Steam secondary-installer guidance).

- Biggest revamp in Civilization's history improves everything from graphics to artificial intelligence, with a game that's easier to play than ever
- Major interface changes make a more believable game world and easier game to navigate, with hex-based movement and naturally growing city borders
- All-new battle system makes combat quicker and more tactical than ever before. Cities can now attack units directly and weight of numbers is no longer guarantee of victory
- In Steam, right-click Civ V and choose Manage → Browse local files.
- Look for
_CommonRedist,redist,DirectX,vcredistor a similarly named installer folder. - Run the included DirectX and Visual C++ installers, allowing them to install or repair components.
- Restart Windows and test both Civ V launch modes.
Folder names vary by installation, so there may not be one fixed path. Do not download individual DLL files from third-party sites. If the bundled installer is missing, use Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime or Visual C++ Redistributable page, selecting the runtime and architecture appropriate to the error. Installing every historical runtime without a reason can add confusion.
Fix 4: Remove software interference temporarily
2K lists compatibility conflicts, permissions and interfering background software among common launch problems. Test one change at a time so you know what affected the result.

- EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before.
- ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization's progress through history.
- DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game.
- COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units.
- Close Discord, GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App overlays, AMD overlay, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, screen recorders, macro tools and aggressive game-boosting utilities.
- Disable Steam Overlay for Civ V: right-click the game → Properties → General → turn off the Steam Overlay option.
- Check Windows Security or your antivirus quarantine and protection history for a blocked Civ V executable. If it was blocked, use the product’s allow-list process and restore protection immediately after testing.
- Launch Steam normally. You may test Run as administrator briefly, but do not make elevated launching a permanent requirement unless it clearly resolves a permissions issue.
Fix 5: Reset Civ V’s settings, then test compatibility mode
Rename the user configuration folder
A bad resolution, display setting, mod configuration or damaged cache can crash the game before the main menu. Renaming preserves the data for recovery.
- Close Civ V and Steam.
- Open File Explorer and go to Documents.
- Find
My GamesSid Meier's Civilization V(the exact location can differ). - Rename it to
Sid Meier's Civilization V.backup. - Restart Steam and launch Civ V.
The folder can contain saves, settings, screenshots and logs. If the game starts, copy back only the files you need from the backup. Do not delete the folder as a first step.
Best Value
- Civilization V introduces hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire
- Over $40 worth of DLC (downloadable content) and bonus content packs to enhance and extend your gameplay
- An intuitive interface eases both new players and Civ veterans into the game
- The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging players to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield
- Choose one of eighteen historical civilizations to lead from the stone-age to the space age on your quest to build the world's most powerful empire
Use Windows 7 compatibility mode only as a fallback
- In Steam, choose Manage → Browse local files.
- Right-click the specific DirectX executable you are testing.
- Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Test Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7, apply it, and launch from Steam.
- If there is no improvement, undo the setting instead of stacking more compatibility options.
Compatibility mode is a targeted experiment, not a guaranteed Civ V fix. Apply it to the executable actually being launched; administrator mode and compatibility settings can change permissions, save locations and overlay behavior.

Launch the executable directly as a diagnostic
Steam recommends trying a third-party game’s executable directly when normal launching fails (Steam troubleshooting).
- Open Steam Library, right-click Civ V, and choose Manage → Browse local files.
- Run the relevant Civ V executable directly.
- If it starts directly but not through Steam, investigate launch selection, overlays and shortcut behavior.
- If it fails directly too, focus on runtimes, configuration, the executable, drivers or Windows.
- Do not treat direct launching as a permanent workaround if it bypasses Steam authentication, DLC loading or the intended graphics mode.
Check drivers, updates and mods
- Install the latest stable graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, test the manufacturer’s supported rollback process.
- Review Settings → Windows Update → Update history to correlate timing. Do not assume Windows 11 version 24H2 is a universal Civ V bug; available reports are anecdotal.
- Disable mods and temporarily move or rename the Civ V user-data folder. A mod or altered configuration can look like a Windows launch failure.
Use Event Viewer only for deeper diagnosis
Press Win + X, open Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs → Application immediately after a crash. The failing application or module may point to a driver or runtime fault, but Event Viewer rarely supplies a one-click repair.
Choose the next step by symptom
| Symptom | First action |
|---|---|
| No launcher choice appears | Open Civ V’s Steam properties and select DirectX 9 or DirectX 10/11. |
| Desktop shortcut starts the wrong mode | Launch from the Steam Library; shortcuts default to DirectX 9. |
| “Preparing to launch,” then closes | Verify files, then run the bundled prerequisite installers. |
| Black screen | Test the alternate DirectX mode and rename the user configuration folder. |
| Failure followed an overlay or security change | Disable overlays and inspect security history. |
| Failure followed a driver change | Install a stable driver or test a supported rollback. |
| Mods are installed | Test with mods disabled and the configuration backed up. |
What not to do
- Do not treat “Civ V is incompatible with Windows 11” as a complete diagnosis. Steam lists old Windows-era requirements, including DirectX 11, but that is not a modern performance guarantee (Steam Civ V technical information).
- Do not install DirectX 12 expecting it to replace legacy components; test the game’s supplied installers instead.
- Do not download random DLLs, cracked executables or registry cleaners.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus, run Steam elevated or stack compatibility settings without a specific diagnostic reason.
These steps address the Steam/Windows edition. If you own the GOG or Epic release, identify that edition before applying Steam-specific launch and verification paths. For official ownership information, use the Steam product page.
