Pokémon GO remains the best all-round choice, while Monster Hunter Now is the pick for combat and Pikmin Bloom is the gentlest walking game. The important distinction is that many popular “AR” games use GPS and maps, with camera overlays optional. This guide separates genuinely playable location-based games, camera-first AR, fitness and audio experiences, and retired titles that should not be downloaded.
Camera AR: Digital objects appear through the live camera or on detected surfaces. Location-based: GPS, maps, landmarks or walking determine play; camera AR may be optional. AR-adjacent: Steps, audio, sensors or real-world geography matter without placing objects in the camera view.
Availability, minimum operating systems, servers and features vary by country, device and date. The active cross-platform market is much smaller than “30 best” headlines suggest, so the list uses status labels rather than pretending every entry is equally strong.

Category winners
Best overall: Pokémon GO
Its real-world map combines PokéStops, Gyms, raids, trading and walking progression. Camera catching is optional, so it remains playable when AR tracking is inconvenient. The Apple feature page describes these map and social systems. Expect the strongest community in this list, but rural players may find fewer map points and nearby raid partners.
Best combat: Monster Hunter Now
Choose it for short, skill-based monster fights and equipment progression rather than passive collecting. It is primarily GPS-based; camera AR is not required for its core loop.
Best relaxed walking: Pikmin Bloom
Planting flowers, growing Pikmin, collecting postcards and taking daily walks make this the lowest-pressure major option. Progress depends more on consistent movement than competitive battles.

Best deep RPG: Orna
Orna is the choice for classes, equipment, turn-based battles and long-term character building. Its GPS layer adds place and movement without requiring constant camera use; Google Play currently includes it in AR/location-based recommendations.

Best real-world activity: Geocaching
Geocaching is closer to a global treasure-hunt platform than visual AR, but it uses coordinates to send players to real containers and landmarks. It is often the best answer for someone who wants an outdoor objective rather than a virtual overlay.
Best virtual pet: My Tamagotchi Forever
It is a pet-care game with AR-style features, ads and optional purchases, not a persistent GPS world. Confirm the current camera mode and device support in your store listing.
Best runner: Zombies, Run!
Its missions and story use audio, movement and location to make a run feel like an episode. It is not conventional visual AR, but it is one of the strongest real-world games for runners.

Best room-based AR: The Machines
The Machines is the clearest tabletop-AR concept in this group: place a battlefield on a surface and play competitively. Treat it as availability-sensitive and confirm a current iPhone listing and device requirements before recommending it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Android and iPhone compatibility
Do not assume that a game marked “Android and iOS” supports every phone. Check the minimum operating system, country storefront, recent update, tablet support and whether camera AR requires ARCore on Android or ARKit capabilities on iPhone.
For Pokémon GO, the help center states that AR mode requires an iPhone 6s or newer running iOS 11 or later, or Android 7.0 or later with ARCore support. That is an AR-mode requirement, not a promise that every broader game feature works on those minimums. Jurassic World Alive likewise separates model-specific AR support from its newer listing requirements.

Does AR need to be enabled?
Usually not for location-based games. Disabling camera AR can reduce battery and heat, avoid tracking failures and make play more comfortable in public. Camera-first titles are the exception: their central puzzle or battle may not function without a supported surface-tracking mode.
Battery, tracking and outdoor problems
- GPS, camera use, mobile data, bright screens and background tracking all consume power. Lower brightness, use battery-saving settings, carry a power bank and avoid playing in extreme heat.
- If tracking fails, clean the lens, move to brighter light, point at a textured flat surface and move slowly. Restart AR and update the game and system AR components.
- If AR still fails, disable the camera mode and continue in standard play when the game allows it.
- Rural areas may have fewer portals, raids, map points and players. Multiplayer quality is therefore local, not just a property of the app.
Safety, privacy and spending
- Location and camera permissions can reveal where you live or play. Review background access and revoke it when you are finished.
- Never play while driving, crossing roads or entering private property. Map points can be inaccurate or unsafe.
- Chat, trading and public meetups need extra supervision for children. Age rules differ across Niantic products; consult Niantic’s game-resources page.
- Free usually means free to download. Energy timers, event tickets, randomized rewards, storage limits, subscriptions and competitive purchases can materially change the cost.
- Spoofing GPS can lead to account bans and undermines location-based play.
Before downloading a “best AR game”
- Open the current App Store or Google Play listing for your country.
- Check the last update, operating-system requirement, permissions, age rating and purchase disclosures.
- Open the developer’s support page and look for shutdown or server notices.
- Look for a current event calendar or recent player communication, not just old reviews and videos.
- Decide whether you want camera overlays, GPS exploration, walking motivation, audio storytelling or a conventional RPG with a map layer.
Do not download retired titles as current games. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Minecraft Earth, The Witcher: Monster Slayer, The Walking Dead: Our World, Ghostbusters World and Five Nights at Freddy’s AR are historical examples. Peridot’s official site says its mobile game is ending, so it is not a stable recommendation.
How these recommendations are judged
The editorial assessment weighs core gameplay (25%), real-world integration (15%), progression (15%), solo play (10%), community health (10%), Android/iOS availability (10%), monetization fairness (10%), and accessibility, safety and battery burden (5%). It uses current store listings, official documentation and published status information; it does not claim hands-on testing of every title.
The Bottom Line
Choose Pokémon GO for the biggest world, Monster Hunter Now for combat, Pikmin Bloom for calm walking, or Orna for a deeper RPG. Treat camera-first and availability-sensitive titles separately, and verify every listing before installing.
