Stellar Blade Review: Excellent Combat, Uneven Story

Stellar Blade’s responsive combat and striking presentation are its biggest strengths, while uneven writing and level design make the recommendation depend on your priorities.

Stellar Blade is worth playing if responsive action combat and lavish science-fiction spectacle matter more to you than consistently nuanced storytelling. Shift Up’s first console game delivers a substantial single-player adventure built around parries, dodges, combos and dramatic boss encounters. Its narrative and some level layouts are less reliable, so it is an easier recommendation for action-focused players than for anyone seeking a character-driven story above all else.

What is Stellar Blade?

Stellar Blade is a story-driven action adventure set in a post-apocalyptic world. You play through a campaign that combines real-time fighting with exploration and RPG-style progression. PlayStation describes it as a “story-driven action adventure” featuring “fast-paced combat and RPG elements.” It is Shift Up’s debut console release.

The PlayStation 5 version launched on April 26, 2024. A PC edition followed on June 11, 2025.

How good is the combat?

Combat is the game’s clearest achievement and its strongest reason to play. Encounters ask you to read enemy animations, time defensive actions and choose when to commit to attacks rather than simply hold an attack button. The result is a system that rewards learning patterns and improving execution.

Why the fighting works

  • Responsive real-time attacks make timing feel important.
  • Parries and dodges create a deliberate rhythm against stronger enemies.
  • Boss encounters provide the most demanding tests of the combat system.
  • RPG elements give you room to develop your preferred approach as the campaign progresses.

Metacritic’s PS5 critic snapshot, accessed in 2026, gives the game an overall score of 7.9 and a gameplay subscore of 8.4. Those figures are aggregation snapshots rather than a permanent quality rating, but they reflect the broad critical pattern: the action is more consistently successful than the writing.

Is the story good?

The story supplies a readable science-fiction framework and plenty of visual spectacle, but its writing is uneven. Characterisation and lore do not always reach the depth suggested by the setting, and the campaign can feel more interested in momentum and presentation than in carefully developed themes.

That does not make the narrative a failure. Players who mainly want a reason to move between striking locations and increasingly difficult fights will find enough plot to carry the journey. Readers who expect subtle dialogue, consistently complex characters or tightly controlled world-building should temper expectations.

World, visuals and level design

Stellar Blade makes a strong audiovisual impression. Its science-fiction environments, enemy designs and set-piece presentation give the campaign a clear visual identity. Metacritic’s PS5 category snapshot lists 7.8 for art direction, world and atmosphere, 7.9 for the score, and 7.5 for characters and depth.

Exploration is less consistent than the presentation. Some areas support the action well, while other layouts can feel awkward or insufficiently purposeful. This is one of the game’s notable limitations: attractive spaces do not always become great spaces to navigate.

Who should play Stellar Blade?

Buy it if you want

  • Action combat built around timing, enemy reading and improvement.
  • A visually polished science-fiction adventure.
  • A substantial single-player campaign with RPG elements.
  • A free PS5 trial before purchase.

Approach cautiously if you need

  • Consistently sophisticated character writing.
  • Uniformly excellent level design.
  • A story that matters more than the combat systems.
  • A no-maintenance PC experience regardless of hardware or settings.

Verdict

Stellar Blade earns its recommendation through combat first. The fighting is responsive and expressive, while the audiovisual work gives the campaign a memorable sense of scale. The uneven story and occasional level-design problems keep it from being an all-round masterpiece, but they do not erase the appeal of a game whose action is this polished.

The most direct purchase is the physical PS5 edition for players who want a simple console experience. PC is the better fit for ultrawide displays and platform flexibility, provided your hardware and tolerance for configuration make that trade-off worthwhile.
