Lenovo Legion Go 2 review: The most beastly portable handheld yet

The Legion Go 2 is one of the fastest, most feature-rich Windows handhelds, but its premium price, 2.03-pound weight, glossy OLED and Windows friction make it a buyer-specific choice.

Verdict: The Lenovo Legion Go 2 is arguably the most fully equipped mainstream Windows gaming handheld, combining AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme, a superb 8.8-inch 144Hz OLED display, detachable controllers, a kickstand and 32GB of memory. It is also unusually heavy, glossy, expensive and still subject to Windows friction. Buy it for those specific features—not simply because it claims the highest frame-rate number.

What the Legion Go 2 is

The Legion Go 2 is a Windows 11 gaming PC in handheld form rather than a closed console. Steam, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, emulators, desktop applications, external monitors and ordinary Windows peripherals all work within the same open environment. That flexibility is its greatest software advantage, but launchers, updates, sign-ins, permissions and mouse-oriented dialogs make setup less seamless than SteamOS or a traditional console.

Lenovo sells two important hardware tiers reported in review coverage. The base configuration uses AMD’s Ryzen Z2 with 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD; Tom’s Hardware listed it at about $1,099.99 in the United States when tested. The premium configuration reviewed by Tom’s Hardware uses the Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 32GB of soldered LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB SSD at $1,349.99. Those are historical review prices, not verified October 2026 street prices; stock, regional SKUs and retailer legitimacy should be checked before purchase.

Tom’s Hardware’s review and Windows Central’s review support the core specification and performance picture.

Performance: extremely fast, but not universally fastest

The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is an 8-core/16-thread Zen 5 and Zen 5c chip paired with 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores. It is among the strongest integrated-PC handheld platforms in mainstream devices, particularly at 1280×800, where the GPU has fewer pixels to render. That makes “most beastly” a defensible hardware description, not proof that it wins every handheld, power limit, game or resolution. Newer devices using different AMD designs, higher power limits or discrete graphics can change the ranking.

Performance is most persuasive when the Go 2 is tuned for the display rather than forced to render every demanding game at native 1920×1200. Resolution, Legion Space power mode, the 15–35W TDP, graphics preset, FSR or other upscaling, frame generation and charger connection all materially change results.

Game results from published testing

Game and test condition Observed result
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, 1280×800, high settings 73–93fps in Tom’s Hardware testing
Marvel’s Midnight Suns, medium settings Reached a 60fps cap with balanced thermals
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 800p, unplugged 66fps average
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 800p, plugged in 75fps average
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 1200p, unplugged 42fps average
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 1200p, plugged in 47fps average

These are publication-specific measurements, not promises for every game. The practical rule is simple: use 800p for demanding AAA titles, reserve 1200p for lighter or older games, and let VRR smooth fluctuations. A statement such as “runs at 60fps” is meaningful only when it includes resolution, preset, TDP, power state and upscaling.

See the full test context at Tom’s Hardware.

The OLED display is the main reason to buy it

The 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED is the Go 2’s most persuasive upgrade. It delivers deep blacks, high contrast, fast response and stronger HDR impact than a conventional LCD. Its 16:10 shape gives PC games and desktop applications useful vertical space, while 30–144Hz variable refresh rate helps both low frame rates and high-refresh lighter games.

The move from the original Legion Go’s 1600p panel can look like a downgrade in a specification list. In practice, 1920×1200 is a more sensible target for integrated graphics, and OLED contrast, response and VRR often improve perceived quality more than extra pixels would. Demanding games will not approach 144fps consistently, but desktop scrolling, esports and older titles can benefit.

The glossy surface is the important compromise. It looks excellent indoors and can reflect windows, lamps and daylight outdoors. Peak brightness does not remove those reflections, so outdoor or bright-room users should treat glare as a practical limitation. Brightness and gamut figures are attributed to the tested configuration in Windows Central’s review.

Design, controls and portability

With controllers attached, the Go 2 measures 11.64×5.38×1.66 inches and weighs 2.03 pounds (920 grams). That is heavier than the original Legion Go, ROG Ally X and Steam Deck OLED figures compared by Tom’s Hardware. It is portable in a backpack, couch or hotel-room sense, not pocketable, and unsupported one-hour sessions can become tiring.

The bulk supports real functionality. Rounded controller edges improve grip comfort, Hall-effect joysticks are designed to reduce conventional stick-drift risk (not guarantee failure-proof operation), and the integrated kickstand makes tabletop play practical. The controllers detach wirelessly through pogo-pin connections. The right controller can sit in the included FPS base and act like a small mouse, although setup, remapping and a stable surface are usually required.

Two USB4 ports, a microSD reader, a 3.5mm jack and a reviewed premium package carrying case make the Go 2 a credible small desktop PC. Detaching the controllers also helps when the device is propped up; the feature is useful for tabletop gaming and travel, not merely a novelty. Port placement and the thick chassis should be considered when choosing a dock.

Battery, heat and power choices

The 74Wh battery is a major increase over the original Go’s 49.2Wh pack, though the ROG Ally X has 80Wh. Capacity alone cannot establish runtime. TDP, Legion Space mode, brightness, HDR, refresh rate, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, frame rate, resolution, upscaling and Windows background activity all matter. A demanding modern game can still drain the pack quickly, particularly at high wattage.

Carry the supplied 65W charger or a USB-C Power Delivery power bank rated to sustain the handheld’s charging requirements. A low-output phone bank may only slow discharge while gaming. Windows Central measured a hottest vent area of about 124°F in its test while finding the back and grips comparatively manageable; treat that as a test condition, not a universal temperature. Results also differ between plugged and unplugged operation.

Windows 11 and Legion Space

Windows gives the Go 2 access to virtually every PC storefront and application, but the desktop was not designed for a controller-only device. Touch keyboards, launcher updates, sign-in screens, permissions and tiny buttons can interrupt a session. Suspend and resume is less predictable than on a console or SteamOS handheld.

  • Take Full Control: Legion TrueStrike Controllers deliver all-day comfort and precision with an anti-slip texture for total control. Adjustable triggers switch effortlessly between short and long presses. Hall effect joysticks and triggers ensure smooth, accurate movements. A touchpad, Pivot D-Pad, RGB joysticks, and Legion O power button add style and functionality.
  • Designed for Comfort, Built to Last: The Lenovo Legion Go S features a lightweight 1.6 lb (730g) ergonomic unibody for fatigue-free gaming. Its Nebula polymer finish resists dirt and oil, while an anti-slip texture ensures a secure grip. With dual USB Type-C ports and a combo audio jack, it seamlessly connects to your accessories. Built to last with Windows 11 Home.
  • With 128GB MicroSD card, Mytrix 5-in-1 hub, microfiber cleaning cloth, and 9H tempered glass screen protector.

Lenovo’s Legion Space overlay centralizes performance modes, controller profiles and device controls. Reviewers found it materially improves handheld use but also reported freezes or inconsistent behavior. The FPS controller mode can help with mouse-heavy games, yet is awkward without a desk and is not a replacement for a full mouse and keyboard.

Microsoft’s future handheld-oriented Windows work should not be treated as an available fix until it is verified in the current build. The software experience remains a trade: maximum launcher and desktop compatibility in exchange for more troubleshooting.

Storage and upgradeability

The premium unit has 32GB of soldered LPDDR5X-8000 memory, so RAM capacity cannot be increased. The 1TB M.2 2242 SSD can be replaced, and Tom’s Hardware reports that the internal layout can accept a standard-length 2280 drive. A microSD card is convenient for additional games, though it is not automatically equivalent to the internal SSD for load times or sustained performance.

Opening the chassis requires the correct SSD, careful handling of screws, ribbon cables, battery connections and thermal parts. Warranty rules vary by region. Confirm Lenovo’s current service documentation before attempting a 2280 conversion; not every drive has the same clearance, heat or endurance characteristics.

How it compares with alternatives

Steam Deck OLED

The Steam Deck OLED is lighter, generally cheaper and offers a more coherent SteamOS-style interface, suspend behavior and setup flow. The Legion Go 2 is faster at the high end, runs Windows-native Game Pass and launchers more directly, has a larger 144Hz OLED panel, detachable controllers and more memory in the premium tier. Tom’s Hardware framed a premium Go 2 as expensive enough to compete with a Steam Deck OLED plus a Nintendo Switch 2; that is a value comparison, not equivalent performance. See Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page.

ROG Ally X

ASUS’s ROG Ally X is smaller and lighter, uses an 80Wh battery and retains conventional fixed controls. It is often the better choice for portable comfort and value. The Go 2 counters with its larger OLED display, kickstand, detachable controllers and 32GB premium configuration. Compare current prices rather than assuming the launch gap remains.

ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X

The Xbox-branded ASUS handhelds target a more console-like Windows experience. Tom’s Hardware listed the entry ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 in its category guide, but pricing and stock change. Its lower price and lighter body should be compared with the base Ryzen Z2 Go 2 for value; the Ally X is the more relevant premium comparison. Neither base model should be treated as a direct performance match for the Z2 Extreme Go 2. See ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally page and Tom’s Hardware’s handheld guide.

Lenovo Legion Go S

The Go S is a smaller, more conventional handheld for buyers who value lower weight and straightforward controls. The Go 2 offers the OLED panel, larger screen, detachable controls, kickstand and higher-end premium configuration.

Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 wins on Nintendo exclusives, closed-console simplicity, family use and predictable suspend/resume. The Go 2 wins on Steam, PC Game Pass, mods, emulation, desktop software and a much higher PC performance ceiling. They are different platforms, so price comparisons describe total use cases rather than interchangeable hardware.

Nintendo’s official information is at Nintendo Switch 2.

Who should buy the Legion Go 2?

Buy it if you want

  • The largest premium handheld OLED screen and 144Hz VRR.
  • Detachable controllers, a built-in kickstand and tabletop flexibility.
  • High-end integrated AMD performance, especially at 800p.
  • 32GB memory for demanding games, mods, multitasking and desktop workloads.
  • A Windows PC that can connect to monitors, docks, keyboards and other peripherals.
  • A substantial upgrade in display quality and ergonomics from an older handheld.

Choose something else if you prioritize

  • Low price, low weight or genuinely pocketable portability.
  • Console-like setup, instant resume and minimal launcher maintenance.
  • Outdoor play without reflections.
  • Long unsupported sessions on battery.
  • A dramatic performance leap from an existing Ryzen Z1 Extreme device.
  • Games that already run well on a cheaper handheld or Steam Deck OLED.

Final verdict

The Legion Go 2 is a hardware showcase rather than a universal recommendation. It offers one of the strongest combinations of integrated performance, OLED image quality, memory, modular controls and Windows flexibility in a mainstream handheld. Its best experience is usually 800p gaming with sensible tuning, not native 1200p ultra settings in every AAA title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The price, 2.03-pound body, glossy screen, Windows friction and ordinary high-wattage battery limitations are substantial. Buy it when the large OLED display, detachable controllers, kickstand and desktop-PC versatility are exactly what you want. Avoid it when value, portability or console simplicity matters more. “Most beastly” describes the feature and hardware package; it does not make the Go 2 the best-value or best overall handheld for everyone.
