Yes—CarX Street on PC supports gamepads. The developer confirmed PC controller support, and Steam metadata lists full controller support and gamepad input support (developer announcement; SteamDB metadata). An Xbox-compatible XInput controller connected before you launch the game is usually the simplest setup. PlayStation and DirectInput controllers can also work, but may need Steam Input or other configuration.

This guide covers connection, control assignment, analog steering, Steam Input choices, and recovery steps when CarX Street detects a pad inconsistently.

What you need

  • A Windows PC running the Steam version of CarX Street.
  • An Xbox-compatible, PlayStation, or third-party controller.
  • A USB cable for first-time testing, even if you normally use Bluetooth or a wireless dongle.
  • Steam installed and updated.

Controller support refers to the PC edition; mobile and console behavior should not be assumed to match it. Support also does not guarantee identical button glyphs, automatic detection for every model, or compatibility with every paddle, back button, remapper, or virtual-device driver.

Which controller is easiest?

Xbox-compatible controller: the safest default

Windows and Steam generally handle XInput devices reliably, and Xbox-style prompts are the most likely to match what the game displays. An official Xbox Wireless Controller is a straightforward mainstream choice (official product page). This is a practical recommendation, not an official ranking, and an existing compatible controller is usually better value than buying another one.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

DualSense or DualShock 4

Both PlayStation controllers may work through native recognition or Steam Input translation. Steam Input can present the pad to the game as an Xbox-style controller, so do not expect PlayStation symbols on screen. Follow the displayed prompts rather than relying only on the markings on the controller. See the DualSense and DualShock 4 product pages for the hardware.

Third-party controllers

Prefer a model with a dependable XInput mode. DirectInput-only devices may need Steam Input or a vendor utility. USB, Bluetooth, and 2.4-GHz dongles can expose different drivers, and some devices create both physical and virtual controllers. For a purchase, prioritize Windows detection, XInput support, a comfortable layout for throttle and brake, and a wired fallback over brand reputation.

Connect and configure CarX Street

  1. Connect the controller before starting the game. Plug in USB first while troubleshooting. For Bluetooth, pair it in Windows and confirm it shows as connected; for a dongle, install any required firmware or driver.
  2. Test it in Steam. Open Steam’s controller settings or controller test screen. Move both sticks, press every button, and squeeze both triggers. If Steam cannot read the device, CarX Street cannot be expected to use it reliably.
  3. Launch CarX Street from Steam with the controller still connected. Community guidance specifically recommends pairing or plugging in before launch (Steam Community discussion).
  4. Open the game’s control options. Menu names and placement can change between builds, so look for the current Controls, Controller, or button-assignment area rather than relying on an unverified path.
  5. Test in a low-risk situation. Check steering, throttle, brake/reverse, handbrake, camera, pause, map navigation, and gear shifting. Make sure triggers are not permanently pressed and that the game is accepting input even if keyboard prompts remain visible.
  6. Apply or save changes only if the current screen offers that command. Do not assume a particular button label.

A successful setup lets you navigate menus, steer with the left stick, modulate throttle and brake, and use assigned buttons consistently without keyboard/controller focus switching.

A practical starting layout

The following is a recommended starting point, not an official default map. Your available bindings depend on the current PC build and your transmission settings.

Function Suggested control
Steering Left stick
Throttle Right trigger
Brake/reverse Left trigger
Handbrake Face or shoulder button
Camera Right stick
Shift up/down Shoulder buttons or paddles
Pause Menu/Start button
Map and menu navigation D-pad and face buttons

One community report says a PC update added manual-transmission gear assignment to the right stick; treat that as version-specific and verify the available bindings in your installation (community report).

Settings for smoother racing and drifting

Use analog triggers

Analog throttle and brake control is preferable to digital buttons. It allows progressive braking, finer corner-exit throttle, less wheelspin, and more stable drift corrections.

Diagnose steering sensitivity and dead zones by symptom

  • Twitchy near center: reduce sensitivity or increase the center dead zone slightly.
  • Slow or unresponsive: reduce the dead zone and consider increasing sensitivity.
  • Uneven movement: test the controller in Steam or Windows before changing game settings.
  • Janky drifting: test with Steam Input disabled if the pad is being translated through another layer.

There is no universal numerical preset: stick wear, controller type, calibration, assistance settings, and translation software all change the result. Vibration is a separate variable; test it enabled, and disable remapping software first if input becomes unstable.

Steam Input: when it helps and when it hurts

Enable it when

  • A PlayStation controller is not recognized.
  • A third-party pad is DirectInput-only.
  • You need a custom Steam layout or compatibility translation.

Disable or bypass it when

  • An Xbox/XInput controller already works.
  • Steering becomes inconsistent or analog behavior changes.
  • The game receives duplicate inputs.
  • DS4Windows, reWASD, or another emulator is already presenting a virtual Xbox controller.

Steam Input is a compatibility layer, not an automatic upgrade. Use one translation layer at most while diagnosing a problem; running Steam Input alongside DS4Windows, reWASD, and vendor remappers can expose duplicate devices or conflicting axes.

Fix common controller problems

CarX Street does not detect the controller

  1. Close the game.
  2. Connect the controller by USB.
  3. Confirm Windows detects it.
  4. Confirm Steam registers buttons, sticks, and triggers.
  5. Disconnect other pads, wheels, virtual controllers, and remapping devices.
  6. Restart Steam.
  7. Launch CarX Street with only the intended controller connected.
  8. If Bluetooth fails, retest over USB to separate pairing problems from game compatibility.

It works while driving but not in menus

Check that the game window has focus and that no overlay or second device is intercepting input. The game may have launched while the pad was disconnected or may be switching between keyboard and controller. Alt-Tabbing out and back restored input for one player, but this is an anecdotal workaround rather than an official fix (reported case). Restart with the controller connected if focus does not recover.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

Xbox works but PlayStation or third-party hardware does not

Try Steam Input, then test it disabled if controls feel wrong. Check for both a physical and virtual device, remove other emulators, and use USB while diagnosing. Players have reported more configuration friction with some PlayStation-style and third-party devices, but that is user experience rather than a universal compatibility rule (community report; Steam discussion).

Keyboard prompts keep appearing

Stop touching the keyboard and mouse while testing. Then check for stick or trigger drift, duplicate virtual inputs, and brief disconnects in Steam’s controller test. Restart the game after choosing one input method. A controller can be working while the interface still shows keyboard glyphs if another device sends intermittent input.

Steering is excessively sensitive

Check calibration and drift first, then dead-zone and sensitivity settings, Steam Input, and every active remapping layer. Do not copy a “perfect” third-party profile as a universal solution.

Triggers act like on/off buttons

The pad may be in a digital or DirectInput mode, Steam Input may be translating the axis incorrectly, or the game may be receiving a button instead of an analog trigger. Retest with a known-good XInput controller over USB.

Input stops after changing devices

Reconnect the intended pad, return focus to the game, and pause/resume if possible. Restart if input does not return. Avoid switching between a wheel, gamepad, and virtual device while the game is running.

Gamepad or racing wheel?

A gamepad is the best balance of cost, space, accessibility, and analog control for most PC players. Keyboard controls remain a fallback but are less suitable for smooth steering and throttle modulation.

The developer has also confirmed steering-wheel support (developer announcement), and Hori lists CarX Street PC compatibility for a specific wheel model (compatibility document). That does not establish that every wheel, driver, button map, or force-feedback feature works identically. Wheels require more space, calibration, and device-specific checking, so they are an enthusiast alternative rather than the simplest controller solution.

Version and platform notes

CarX Street’s PC controls can change with updates. A September 2024 PC 1.0.2 announcement is documented by Steam (update notice), but the exact live PC build should be recorded and checked at publication time. SteamDB’s current metadata lists full controller support and Steam Deck Verified status (SteamDB); Steam Deck compatibility is supporting evidence, not a complete Windows test. The official Steam Community announcement says the default Deck configuration exposes all game features and uses Deck controller icons (announcement).
