Which Order Should You Defeat Hollow Knight Bosses? A Practical Route

There is no single mandatory boss order in Hollow Knight. The world is nonlinear: movement abilities, spell upgrades, nail improvements, charms and exploration open several routes, and many fights can be postponed. For a first playthrough, use the sequence below as a difficulty-balanced route rather than a rulebook. You can skip the False Knight, rearrange several midgame fights and defeat the three Dreamers in any regional order.

Recommended first-playthrough boss order

This route aims to introduce combat gradually, provide useful progression rewards and avoid sending an under-upgraded character into the hardest gates.

  1. False Knight
  2. Hornet Protector (Greenpath)
  3. Soul Master
  4. Mantis Lords
  5. Broken Vessel
  6. Dung Defender
  7. Watcher Knights
  8. Uumuu
  9. Hornet Sentinel (Kingdom’s Edge)
  10. The three Dreamers, in whichever regional order your exploration favors
  11. The Hollow Knight

1. False Knight

Fight False Knight early to learn Hollow Knight’s basic boss rhythm: read a telegraph, avoid an attack, strike during recovery and heal only when there is a safe opening. However, this fight is not compulsory. Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight’s Mega May Update explicitly says, “The first boss can now be skipped!” The change was made because beta players found False Knight intimidating and a major progression obstacle. You can leave, gain skills and upgrades, then return later.

2. Hornet Protector in Greenpath

Hornet is the natural early combat checkpoint. Her fast movement teaches you to watch positioning rather than stand directly beneath a target, and reaching this encounter introduces the game’s first important movement-progression decision. Explore nearby rooms and collect health, Soul and charm improvements if the duel feels overwhelming; Hollow Knight does not require you to force the fight immediately.

  • Explore a vast interconnected world of forgotten highways, overgrown wilds and ruined cities.
  • Forge your own path! The world of Hallownest is expansive and open. Choose which paths you take, which enemies you face and find your own way forward.
  • Evolve with powerful new skills and abilities! Gain spells, strength and speed. Leap to new heights on ethereal wings. Dash forward in a blazing flash. Blast foes with fiery Soul!.Equip Charms! Ancient relics that offer bizarre new powers and abilities. Choose your favourites and make your journey unique!.An enormous cast of cute and creepy characters all brought to life with traditional 2D frame-by-frame animation..

3. Soul Master

Once basic movement and healing feel reliable, Soul Master is a useful mid-early target. The fight tests airborne enemies, deceptive movement and spell timing. It is a good point to begin using spells deliberately instead of treating them as an emergency resource, while still leaving room to explore for nail and charm upgrades before attempting repeated runs.

4. Mantis Lords

Mantis Lords are optional for the basic ending, but they are one of the clearest early skill checks. Their patterns are consistent, and winning opens access through the Mantis territory and rewards players who have learned controlled movement. Attempt them when you are comfortable with dash timing; there is no advantage in treating them as an immediate obligation.

5. Broken Vessel

Broken Vessel fits naturally into the middle of the campaign, after you have collected several movement, damage or survivability improvements. The arena rewards staying mobile and recognizing when an apparent opening is actually a hazard. If your nail is still weak or your mask count is low, explore other branches first and return.

6. Dung Defender

Dung Defender is a flexible midgame fight. You can tackle it before or after Broken Vessel, depending on which tunnels you reach first and how comfortable you are with the arena’s burrowing attacks. Treat these two encounters as a pair of interchangeable midgame objectives rather than a fixed sequence.

Hollow Knight - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]

7. Watcher Knights

Watcher Knights are a late-main-route gate in the City of Tears region. Prepare before committing: upgrade the nail where possible, increase masks or Soul capacity, equip charms that match your preferred damage and healing plan, and practice moving around multiple targets. Entering with a thin upgrade loadout turns a manageable gate into an exhausting damage race.

8. Uumuu

Uumuu is another late-route encounter, located in the teacher area of Fog Canyon and tied to one of the Dreamer objectives. The battle is less about conventional damage windows than about surviving the arena and using its interaction correctly. Arrive with enough health and Soul to withstand an attempt, and do not confuse reaching Fog Canyon with being required to defeat Uumuu immediately.

9. Hornet Sentinel in Kingdom’s Edge

The second Hornet fight is a later readiness check. Her faster patterns punish panic healing and unplanned jumps, so it is sensible to complete additional upgrades and optional exploration before challenging her. Winning marks a major step toward the endgame, but it still does not force an immediate trip to the Black Egg Temple.

10. The three Dreamers

The Dreamers are story objectives rather than a conventional three-boss ladder. Their seals are the requirement for opening the Black Egg Temple, and you may visit their regions in any order that your map and abilities make convenient. The practical route is therefore geographical: defeat whichever Dreamer is accessible, then continue exploring instead of crossing the entire kingdom to preserve an arbitrary sequence.

  • Engage in lethal acrobatic action! Wield a huge suite of deadly moves as you dance between foes in swift, beautiful combat.
  • Craft powerful tools! Master an ever-expanding arsenal of weapons, traps, and mechanisms to vanquish your enemies and explore new heights.
  • Solve shocking quests! Hunt down rare beasts and solve ancient mysteries to grant the wishes of the downtrodden and restore the kingdom’s hope.
  • Face over 200 ferocious foes! Beasts and hunters, monsters and knights. Defeat them all with bravery and skill!

11. The Hollow Knight

After all three Dreamer seals have been removed, the Black Egg Temple becomes accessible and you can challenge the Hollow Knight. This is the base-game route’s final boss. Optional content can remain unfinished without preventing this ending.

Which bosses are actually required?

For the ordinary base-game ending, the essential requirement is access to the Black Egg Temple by dealing with all three Dreamers, followed by the Hollow Knight. Hollow Knight’s nonlinear design means many named encounters are not mandatory checkpoints.

Encounter or group Required for the basic ending? Why you might fight it
False Knight No Early combat practice and progression rewards; explicitly skippable.
Hornet Protector Not universally mandatory in a sequence-broken run Natural early progression and movement-related access.
Soul Master Not universally mandatory Spell progression and a valuable movement/combat test.
Mantis Lords No Optional challenge and access through Mantis territory.
Broken Vessel and Dung Defender No single fixed requirement Midgame progression, rewards and route flexibility.
Watcher Knights Part of the conventional Dreamer route, but sequence breaks can alter requirements Access to a Dreamer objective in the City of Tears route.
Uumuu Part of the conventional Dreamer route, but not a universal order lock One of the Dreamer objectives in Fog Canyon.
Hornet Sentinel No for the basic ending’s broad requirement Late-game progression, challenge and access to optional paths.
Three Dreamers Yes, for opening the Black Egg Temple Removing their seals unlocks the Hollow Knight route.
The Hollow Knight Yes, to finish the base-game route Final encounter inside the Black Egg Temple.

The exact set of fights you can bypass depends on discoveries, movement abilities and sequence-breaking knowledge. “Required” here means required by the normal progression logic, not a promise that every alternate route has identical gates.

Optional bosses and when to schedule them

Early optional encounters

Gruz Mother, Massive Moss Charger, Vengefly King, Soul Warrior and Crystal Guardian can be fought when encountered or postponed. They provide rewards, practice, access or completion progress, but they are not all needed for the basic ending. Flukemarm and Nosk likewise belong to optional exploration and completion planning rather than the essential Dreamer-to-Temple route.

  • Leap into minds with the Dream Nail. Uncover a whole other side to the characters you meet and the enemies you face.

Traitor Lord

Traitor Lord is a late optional fight associated with side content. Schedule it after your movement control is dependable and your damage is upgraded; the arena gives you less room to recover from an imprecise dash than many earlier encounters.

Grimm Troupe, dream fights and Zote

Grimm Troupe encounters, Grey Prince Zote, Nightmare King Grimm, White Defender and related dream challenges are optional goals. They are best treated as post-progression difficulty steps, not prerequisites for reaching the Hollow Knight.

When should you do Godhome?

Leave Godhome, the Hall of Gods and the Pantheons until you have encountered the relevant world bosses and are seeking repeatable mastery challenges. The Hall of Gods generally requires a world boss to have been defeated before its statue can be fought there. Godhome is therefore a practice and challenge framework layered on top of the adventure, not a replacement for the first-playthrough route.

How to choose an alternate order

If you want to depart from the recommended sequence, compare each candidate route on five practical axes:

  • Combat difficulty: Does the fight demand precision you have not yet practiced?
  • Readiness: Do your masks, Soul capacity, nail, spells and charms support repeated attempts?
  • Travel: Can you chain nearby objectives instead of crossing the kingdom repeatedly?
  • Goal: Are you pursuing the basic ending, broad completion or Godhome mastery?

A practical rule is to delay a boss when the route is open but your survivability or movement is not. Hollow Knight rewards returning with better tools more than repeatedly grinding an encounter that your current build makes unnecessarily difficult.

How many bosses are there?

A current Hollow Knight Wiki tally lists 47 bosses including variations, counts Zote the Mighty and excludes two fake-out encounters. That is a community-maintained count rather than a developer-published statistic, and the total depends on what qualifies as a boss and whether variants are counted separately.

The Bottom Line

Use False Knight, Hornet Protector and Soul Master as early learning steps; treat Mantis Lords, Broken Vessel and Dung Defender as flexible midgame fights; prepare carefully for Watcher Knights, Uumuu and Hornet Sentinel; then defeat the three Dreamers in any convenient order before entering the Black Egg Temple. Optional dream, Grimm and Godhome encounters can wait until after the main route.
