For most problems, uninstall only GeForce Experience, restart Windows, and install NVIDIA App from NVIDIA. Removing the companion app normally leaves your NVIDIA graphics driver, games, and launchers intact. Remove the display driver only when Device Manager, black screens, failed updates, or graphics errors indicate that the driver itself is damaged.

As of August 18, 2026, NVIDIA is directing GeForce Experience users to NVIDIA App and has warned that critical GeForce Experience web servers will eventually be switched off. A legacy reinstall may therefore be temporary rather than a durable solution. See NVIDIA’s upgrade notice.

Know which NVIDIA component you are removing

NVIDIA software is split into several packages. Removing one does not automatically remove the others.

Component What it does What normally happens when GeForce Experience is uninstalled
GeForce Experience Legacy companion app for updates, optimization, login, and overlay features Removed
NVIDIA App Current companion app for driver updates, settings, discovery, and overlay features Not removed unless separately selected
NVIDIA graphics driver Lets Windows and games communicate with the GPU Normally remains installed
NVIDIA Control Panel Driver and display settings May remain as a separate package
HD Audio, PhysX, FrameView, Broadcast, and similar packages Optional NVIDIA functions Remain unless individually removed or included in a driver cleanup

Do not select every NVIDIA entry merely because the companion app is malfunctioning. A full driver-stack removal can temporarily leave Windows using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, with reduced resolution, acceleration, or multi-monitor support.

Choose the least disruptive fix

Symptom Start with Why
GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App crashes, will not open, or cannot log in Application-only uninstall and NVIDIA App installation The display driver appears functional
The app will not update or no longer detects games Move to NVIDIA App It is NVIDIA’s current platform
Games crash across several titles, Control Panel will not open, or Device Manager shows a display-adapter error Reinstall the NVIDIA driver The underlying display software may be damaged
Black screen after an update or repeated installer rollback Driver reinstall, then advanced cleanup only if needed A deeper driver conflict is possible
Hybrid-graphics laptop switching is broken Check the laptop manufacturer’s graphics, chipset, BIOS, and power-management packages first Generic NVIDIA software may not contain the OEM customizations

Prepare before uninstalling

  • Sign in with an administrator account.
  • Save work and close games, launchers, browsers, recording tools, MSI Afterburner, Discord overlays, and other GPU utilities.
  • Copy important recordings and note the recording folder, hotkeys, game-optimization choices, overlay preferences, and custom NVIDIA Control Panel settings. Preservation varies by version.
  • Download the replacement NVIDIA App or driver before removing anything. Use the official NVIDIA driver selector, choosing the exact GPU, Windows edition, driver type, and Game Ready or Studio branch.
  • Laptop owners should also bookmark the manufacturer’s support page (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, or the applicable vendor).
  • Create a restore point before removing a driver package or changing the Driver Store. Microsoft recommends administrative privileges and restore planning for device and driver removal; see Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance.

Uninstall GeForce Experience in Windows 11 or Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, then Installed apps (Windows 10 may label this Apps & features).
  3. Search for GeForce Experience. The entry may instead be NVIDIA App or another specifically named NVIDIA component.
  4. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  5. Confirm the wizard, then restart Windows even if no restart is requested.

These labels follow Microsoft’s current uninstall path, documented at Uninstall or remove apps and programs in Windows. Uninstalling the app does not normally remove the display driver.

If the app is missing from Settings

  1. Search for and open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  3. Locate GeForce Experience (or the relevant NVIDIA App entry), right-click it, and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
  4. Complete the wizard and restart.

If neither list contains it, search Windows for “NVIDIA” and check whether the software has already been replaced. For a partially registered installation, restart first, then use Windows’ repair or removal controls. Do not delete random NVIDIA folders or registry keys. Microsoft’s uninstall page also links to its Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter.

Install NVIDIA App

  1. Download NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official site or use the current package offered with an NVIDIA driver. NVIDIA describes the app and its supported functions in the upgrade notice.
  2. Close competing overlays and GPU utilities.
  3. Run the installer; use administrator approval if Windows requests it.
  4. Choose the ordinary installation unless the display driver also needs repair.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Open NVIDIA App or NVIDIA Control Panel. Confirm that the correct GPU and driver are detected, then test a game and any overlay feature you use.

Feature parity is not guaranteed for every older hardware configuration, Windows build, OEM laptop, managed PC, or region. NVIDIA’s current direction nevertheless favors NVIDIA App over a legacy GeForce Experience reinstall.

Reinstall the NVIDIA graphics driver when the driver is the problem

Use the driver path for repeated update failures, Code 43 or similar Device Manager errors, black screens, flickering after an update, missing Control Panel, lost GPU acceleration, or crashes across unrelated games. It is unnecessary for an app-only login or overlay problem when the driver works normally.

  1. Open the NVIDIA driver selector.
  2. Select the exact GPU family and model, Windows edition, driver type, and download type. Choose Game Ready for gaming-focused releases or Studio when your workload and compatibility testing favor that branch.
  3. Download the newest package listed for that exact hardware and OS; do not copy a version number from an older article.
  4. Close GPU utilities and run the installer.
  5. Choose a normal installation first. If the installer offers a clean-install option and the issue is driver corruption or conflicting profiles, select it after reviewing the components. Wording varies by driver package and Windows configuration.
  6. Restart and verify the adapter in Device Manager, NVIDIA App, and a test game.

A clean installation resets or replaces driver components and settings; it does not promise removal of every NVIDIA file, Driver Store package, or third-party conflict. NVIDIA notes that download accelerators and background security software can interfere with installation. Treat that as conditional troubleshooting: use your security product’s safe pause procedure only when necessary and re-enable protection immediately. See NVIDIA’s installation hints. Current driver packages may also offer NVIDIA App installation, as shown on NVIDIA’s driver details page.

Advanced: remove a display driver and its Driver Store package

This is not the default GeForce Experience reinstall. Use it only after an official reinstall fails, multiple packages conflict, a vendor transition left remnants, or persistent display errors point to the driver store. Removing the driver can leave Windows at low resolution until the replacement is installed.

Device Manager method

  1. Confirm that the replacement driver installer is already downloaded.
  2. Create a restore point. Disconnect from the internet only when preventing Windows from immediately supplying a replacement driver is necessary.
  3. Open Device Manager. Use View > Show hidden devices only when appropriate.
  4. Expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA GPU, and select Uninstall device.
  5. Select the option to delete the driver software only if you intentionally want to remove that package. The checkbox is not available in every situation and requires appropriate privileges.
  6. Restart, then run the downloaded NVIDIA installer.

Microsoft distinguishes removing a device entry from deleting its driver package. Windows can retain a package in the Driver Store and reinstall it when the hardware is redetected; details are in Microsoft’s driver-removal documentation.

PnPUtil method for experienced administrators

Open an elevated Command Prompt and inventory third-party packages:

pnputil /enum-drivers

Identify the correct NVIDIA published name, then remove only that package:

pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall

Replace oem##.inf with the exact name shown on that computer. Never guess the INF name or delete unrelated drivers. Microsoft documents the syntax and warnings in the PnPUtil reference and driver-inventory guidance. An incorrect deletion can cause instability or remove functionality.

What happens to games, saves, and recordings?

  • Uninstalling GeForce Experience does not uninstall games or launchers such as Steam, Epic Games Store, or Xbox.
  • It may remove cached data, login state, overlay configuration, optimization choices, or application preferences.
  • Recordings saved in a user-selected ShadowPlay folder should be copied or checked before removal.
  • Game saves are controlled by each game and launcher. Cloud backup is not universal, so back up important saves independently.

Troubleshoot the result

“A newer version is already installed”

  1. Restart Windows and complete any pending Windows Update restart.
  2. Remove the existing NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience entry through Settings or Control Panel.
  3. Retry the official installer.
  4. If registration remains broken, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter linked from its uninstall guidance. Do not erase arbitrary folders or registry keys.

The display is stuck at low resolution

This is expected while the NVIDIA driver is absent or inactive. Install the previously downloaded driver, restart, and check Device Manager for the correct GPU and warning icons.

Windows reinstalls the driver

Device removal alone may leave the package in the Driver Store. If complete removal is necessary, remove the identified package as well; Microsoft explains this distinction in its device and package documentation.

NVIDIA App installs but cannot detect the GPU

  • Confirm that the adapter appears in Device Manager and is not disabled.
  • Verify that the driver matches the exact GPU and Windows edition.
  • Restart and check for a device error code.
  • On laptops, install the OEM graphics package and confirm that Intel or AMD integrated-graphics drivers, firmware, and power-management software are current.

Overlay or recording does not work

  • Enable the feature and hotkeys in NVIDIA App.
  • Close other overlays temporarily.
  • Check application permissions, the recording destination, available disk space, and which GPU the game is using on a laptop.
  • Confirm driver and app compatibility before blaming the app.

Black screen after driver removal

Wait briefly for Windows to finish redetecting the adapter, then try a restart and connect the display to the expected GPU output. If Windows remains usable only with a basic adapter, boot with the replacement driver ready and install it. Laptop users should prefer the manufacturer’s recovery or driver package when the internal display depends on hybrid graphics.

Laptop and managed-PC cautions

Notebook graphics are often coordinated by Intel or AMD integrated graphics, NVIDIA drivers, firmware, BIOS settings, and vendor power-management software. A generic NVIDIA package may work, but it is not universally preferable to the OEM package. Corporate policies, restricted accounts, nonstandard Windows installations, and endpoint security can also block removal or installation. In those cases, use the administrator or manufacturer-supported recovery path rather than forcing Driver Store changes.
