Connecting Your PS5 Controller to PC: A Step-by-Step Guide (Windows 10 and 11)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can connect a PS5 DualSense controller to a Windows PC with a USB-C data cable or Bluetooth—no special Sony adapter or driver is required. USB is the best choice for full PC features: supported games can use haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and the headset jack, while Bluetooth is convenient for ordinary controller input.

What you need

  • A Sony DualSense wireless controller.
  • A 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. Windows 10 support from Microsoft ended on October 14, 2025, but Sony still lists Windows 10 64-bit as compatible with DualSense controllers: Sony’s compatibility guidance.
  • For wired use, a USB cable with a USB-C connector that carries data. Charge-only cables will not transmit controller input.
  • For wireless use, built-in Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth adapter. Microsoft explains Bluetooth hardware requirements at its Bluetooth pairing guide.

Method 1: Connect with USB

  1. Insert the USB-C end of the cable into the DualSense.
  2. Connect the other end to the PC.
  3. Press the PS button.

Windows normally detects the controller automatically. Sony does not require a separate standard USB driver; its connection instructions are at PlayStation Support. If nothing happens, try another USB port and a different known-good data cable.

What USB enables

  • Supported PC games can provide DualSense haptic feedback over USB.
  • Adaptive triggers depend on individual game support and may also require USB.
  • The controller’s headset jack requires a wired PC connection.
  • The built-in microphone and speaker work in Windows only when the game supports them.

Method 2: Connect wirelessly with Bluetooth

Put the DualSense into pairing mode

  1. Ensure the player indicator is off. If it is lit, hold the PS button until the controller turns off.
  2. Unplug the USB cable.
  3. Hold the Create button (the small button left of the touchpad) and the PS button together.
  4. Continue holding until the light bar flashes.

Bluetooth pairing uses Create + PS, not Options + PS. Sony’s illustrated procedure is available at PlayStation Support.

Pair in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth, select Devices, then choose Add device.
  3. Select Bluetooth.
  4. Choose the DualSense when it appears.

Windows confirms the connection by flashing the light bar and lighting a player indicator. See Microsoft’s current menu path at Microsoft Support.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Pair in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Devices.
  2. Select Bluetooth & other devices, then Add Bluetooth or other device.
  3. Choose Bluetooth.
  4. Select the DualSense from the list.

Windows 10 uses different labels; Microsoft’s hardware instructions are at Microsoft Support.

Use one DualSense with several devices

Current DualSense controllers can store up to four Bluetooth pairings. Assign a device to a slot by disconnecting USB, turning the controller off, then holding the slot’s action button and PS for more than five seconds while pairing.

Slot Buttons
1 PS + Triangle
2 PS + Circle
3 PS + Cross
4 PS + Square

When the light bar and player indicators flash twice, add the controller in Windows Bluetooth settings. To switch to an already paired device, hold that slot button and PS for about three seconds. Sony also supports automatic slot assignment by holding Create + PS for at least three seconds during pairing. If all four slots are occupied, the least recently used pairing is replaced. Details are in Sony’s multiple-device instructions.

Check whether Windows sees the controller

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter joy.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the controller, choose Properties, and open the Test tab.
  4. Press buttons and move both sticks.

If inputs respond in this panel but not in a game, the physical connection is working; investigate that game’s controller support or input translation. Microsoft’s controller-testing explanation is at Microsoft Support.

Set up the DualSense in Steam

Steam has native PlayStation-controller support. Its current behavior prefers a game’s built-in PlayStation support when available and uses Steam Input when the game needs translation, as described in Valve’s Steam Input update and Valve’s controller notes.

Confirm detection

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Steam > Settings > Controller.
  3. Confirm that Steam lists the DualSense.

Current clients may describe the option as PlayStation-controller support rather than a separate “DualSense” switch. Older guides that require a universal “PlayStation Configuration Support” checkbox may not match the present interface.

Change Steam Input for one game

  1. Open Library.
  2. Right-click the game and select Properties.
  3. Open Controller.
  4. Choose the desired Steam Input behavior from the drop-down.

Start with the game’s default. For a title with native DualSense support, forcing Steam Input can replace PlayStation button prompts or interfere with adaptive triggers and haptics. Valve documents per-game settings at Steamworks documentation.

Non-Steam games and XInput-only titles

Windows may recognize the controller even when a particular game does not. Many PC games accept only Microsoft’s XInput interface. First connect the controller, test it with joy.cpl, and inspect the game’s controller settings.

PlayStation DualSense™ Wireless Controller – Chroma Indigo
  • Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
  • Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
  • If the game supports DualSense directly, use the normal connection.
  • If it supports PlayStation controllers through Steam Input, add the game to Steam and launch it there.
  • If it accepts only XInput, use a maintained mapper such as DS4Windows, which emulates an Xbox 360 controller. Its releases page lists version 3.5, released February 9, 2026: DS4Windows releases.

Do not run Steam Input and DS4Windows simultaneously. Both can expose a physical and virtual controller, producing duplicate buttons, menus that move twice or the wrong device being selected. DS4Windows’ configuration guidance is on its project page.

Update DualSense firmware from a PC

Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application for Windows can update DualSense device software without a PS5 console. For the most reliable update:

  1. Connect the controller by USB.
  2. Open PlayStation Accessories and select the connected controller.
  3. Choose the firmware-update option if offered.
  4. Keep the cable connected and do not shut down the PC until the update finishes.

Sony’s controller support page and PC update instructions are at PlayStation Accessories support and DualSense support.

It does not appear in Bluetooth settings

  • Turn on Bluetooth at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11).
  • Confirm the light bar is flashing and the USB cable is unplugged.
  • Charge the controller, move it close to the PC, and turn off Airplane mode.
  • Check for Bluetooth driver or Windows updates.

Microsoft lists pairing mode, range, battery, driver and update problems among common causes at its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.

It appears but will not connect

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Find the controller, select More options (…) > Remove device.
  3. Select Add device and pair it again.

Use Microsoft’s remove-and-re-pair procedure at Microsoft Support.

Bluetooth is unstable

Keep the controller within range and avoid placing it directly beside an unshielded USB 3.0 device, which Microsoft identifies as a possible source of Bluetooth interference: Bluetooth troubleshooting.

Windows works, but the game does not

Use joy.cpl to separate a connection problem from a game-support problem. Then determine whether the title expects native DualSense input, Steam Input or XInput. For Steam titles, check Library > game Properties > Controller; for other games, use Steam Input or an XInput mapper only when required.

  • Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers (Available when feature is supported by game)
  • Find your voice, share your passion, chat online with the built in microphone (Available when feature is supported by game)
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
  • Multi-device connectivity, connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices

There are no haptics or adaptive triggers

These effects are not universal. Haptics require game support and USB on PC. Adaptive triggers require game support and may also require USB. Bluetooth can therefore provide ordinary buttons and sticks while omitting DualSense-specific effects.

The game detects two controllers

Close either Steam Input or the third-party mapper. A physical device plus a virtual device can generate duplicate input; DS4Windows specifically advises disabling conflicting Steam controller options.

Reset the controller

  1. Turn off the PS5 and unplug the controller.
  2. Find the small reset hole beside the Sony logo on the back.
  3. Press and hold the reset button with a pin for at least five seconds.
  4. Reconnect by USB and press PS.

Sony’s reset procedure is documented at DualSense troubleshooting. Resetting does not reconfigure the controller or change its pairing settings.

What you do not need

  • DS4Windows is not required for basic USB, Bluetooth or Steam use; it is mainly for games that lack PlayStation support or require XInput.
  • A special Sony PC adapter is unnecessary. Use standard Bluetooth hardware or a Bluetooth adapter if the PC has none.
  • Steam Input does not have to be forced globally; use native game support when available and change the per-game setting only when needed.
