That is a meaningful change for Ubuntu gamers who previously depended on a browser, unofficial wrappers, or the separate Steam Deck workflow—but it is not universal, stable Linux support yet. NVIDIA’s own download and requirements pages still label Linux beta, with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later as the documented target.
The short version
- Yes: there is an official native Linux PC client.
- Official target: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later Ubuntu releases listed by NVIDIA.
- Important limits: Linux support remains beta, distributions are not equally certified, and GPU, Vulkan video decoding, driver and display-server requirements apply.
- Fallback: the browser version remains useful on unsupported distributions and systems.
NVIDIA announced the native Linux PC application at CES 2026 and described it as entering beta in early 2026. NVIDIA’s current requirements still call the Linux experience beta, despite some secondary reports describing it as having “arrived” or “exited beta.” The first-party status is therefore best described as an official native app in beta.
What changed for Linux gamers?
Before 2026, Linux users generally accessed GeForce NOW through a browser, community wrappers, or the GeForce NOW application intended for Steam Deck and SteamOS. The new client is a separate Linux PC download. It is not evidence that every Linux distribution or desktop session is supported, and it does not make streamed games native Linux software.
Games still render on NVIDIA’s remote servers. Your computer decodes and displays the stream, handles input and audio, and provides the network connection. That lowers the local GPU requirement compared with running a modern game yourself, but compatible hardware video decoding and a reliable connection remain essential.

See NVIDIA’s download page and system requirements for the current support list.
Which Linux distributions are supported?
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the safest documented baseline. NVIDIA’s support documentation also refers to Ubuntu 24.04 and later. Fedora, Arch, Linux Mint, Debian, Bazzite and other distributions may run the package, but NVIDIA does not present them as officially certified in the current requirements.
A Flatpak or other portable package can improve installation portability; it does not turn every distribution into an officially supported platform. If you use an unsupported distribution, treat the browser client as your dependable fallback.

Hardware and session requirements
| Requirement | NVIDIA’s documented baseline |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later Ubuntu releases identified by NVIDIA |
| CPU | 64-bit dual-core processor at 2.0 GHz or faster |
| Memory | At least 4 GB RAM |
| Local GPU | Modern GPU supporting H.264 or H.265 Vulkan video codecs; NVIDIA cites GeForce 10-series or newer as an example |
| NVIDIA driver | Version 580.126.07 or newer |
| Display server | NVIDIA GPU: select Xorg/X11. AMD or Intel GPU: use Wayland where supported |
The display-server rule is an easy-to-miss failure point. On Ubuntu’s GDM login screen, select the gear icon before signing in and choose Ubuntu on Xorg (or the equivalent Xorg session) when using an NVIDIA GPU. AMD and Intel systems should normally use their supported Wayland session.
NVIDIA also says to reinstall the GeForce NOW application after installing a new host NVIDIA driver. That is unusual enough to remember when diagnosing a failure immediately after a driver upgrade.
How to install the native Linux client
- Open NVIDIA’s Download GeForce NOW page.
- Under Desktop and Laptop, choose Linux (BETA).
- Confirm the Ubuntu version, GPU codec support, display-server session and driver meet the requirements.
- Install the package using the method and package supplied on NVIDIA’s current download page. Do not substitute an unverified package identifier or command.
- Launch GeForce NOW and choose GET IN (or the current sign-in control).
- Complete authentication in the external web browser opened by the app.
- Link the stores or subscriptions containing the games you want to play.
- Search for a supported title and start streaming.
Native-app login requires a web browser. A default graphical browser should be configured before you begin.

If the app does not launch
- Confirm you are on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or a later Ubuntu release listed by NVIDIA.
- Check that the local GPU supports the required H.264/H.265 Vulkan decode path.
- On NVIDIA hardware, verify driver 580.126.07 or newer.
- Switch an NVIDIA system to an Xorg/X11 session.
- If the host driver was recently installed or upgraded, reinstall GeForce NOW.
- Try play.geforcenow.com as a browser fallback.
- For escalation, follow NVIDIA’s Linux app launch troubleshooting guidance and collect the requested application log.
When clicking the login button does nothing
The native app hands authentication to your browser. Set a default browser, open it manually and sign in to your NVIDIA account, then retry the app. Browser privacy settings, blocked callbacks, an unusual sandbox and stale cookies can all interfere. If the browser client works while the native app does not, the problem is likely the handoff rather than your account or membership. NVIDIA documents this case at its Linux login troubleshooting page.
Stutter, black screens and poor quality
- Use Ethernet where practical, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5/6/6E instead of congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Test at the time and location where you normally play; congestion and distance from a GeForce NOW data center matter.
- Lower resolution or frame rate before assuming the local GPU is too slow.
- Check packet loss, jitter, latency and any ISP data cap. A high speed-test result alone does not guarantee responsive cloud gaming.
Network bandwidth targets
| Target stream | Approximate bandwidth NVIDIA lists |
|---|---|
| HD up to 60 fps | 15 Mbps |
| Full HD at 60 fps | 25 Mbps |
| Ultrawide QHD or QHD at 120 fps | 35 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 fps | 45 Mbps |
| QHD/Full HD at 240 or 360 fps | 55 Mbps |
These are approximate requirements, not a guarantee of quality. Latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, data caps and server distance can matter more than the headline download speed.

Native app, browser or Steam Deck?
| Option | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux app | Official Linux PC client and native-app feature path | Ubuntu-focused, beta status, and driver/display-server constraints |
| Browser | Useful on unsupported distributions without package installation | Feature, resolution, input and performance behavior may differ |
| Steam Deck app | Designed for SteamOS and handheld workflows | Does not establish universal desktop Linux support |
Who should use it?
Good fit
- You already own supported games on Steam, Epic, GOG or Ubisoft Connect, or have an eligible PC Game Pass library.
- Your Linux computer is too weak to render modern games but can decode the stream.
- You want access to remote RTX-class hardware without buying a new GPU.
- Your connection has low latency, low packet loss and enough allowance for regular streaming.
Poor fit
- Your favorite games are absent or supported only in a different store version.
- You need mods, arbitrary software or control of a complete remote PC.
- Your Wi-Fi is unstable, latency is high or your data cap is restrictive.
- You want a permanent replacement for a local gaming computer.
How it compares with Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming is the clearest catalog-subscription alternative, while GeForce NOW is centered on supported games connected to your existing PC stores. Xbox Wire listed Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month on April 21, 2026; Microsoft’s catalog and regional conditions apply. See Xbox Cloud Gaming and the Xbox pricing update for current terms.
Choose the Xbox model if an included, rotating catalog matters more than owning PC-store versions. Choose GeForce NOW if your priority is streaming games you already own and the individual titles are supported.
Verdict
NVIDIA’s native Linux PC app removes the browser-only workaround for supported Ubuntu users and is a substantial improvement for Linux cloud gaming. It is not broad, distro-agnostic Linux support: NVIDIA still labels it beta, officially targets Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later, and requires the right decode hardware, driver and display-server session. Start with the Free tier, test your actual games and connection, then consider Performance. Reserve Ultimate for a display and network setup that can genuinely use its higher-resolution and high-refresh features.
