Sony defines it as an unstable connection between the console and a server. It does not, by itself, prove that PlayStation Network (PSN) is down, that your account is banned, or that the console is defective. First check PlayStation service status and run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Then restart your modem and router, waiting at least five minutes before powering them back on. If the problem continues, ask your ISP about router port filtering and try again later.
Sony does not list NW-31453-6 in its current PS5 error-code directory. If a PS5 shows a similar message, confirm the exact code and use the matching PS5 support page.
What NW-31453-6 means
The code means the PS4 is reaching a server unreliably, or the server response is delayed or interrupted. Possible causes include PSN maintenance or an outage, temporary congestion, router or modem instability, ISP maintenance or filtering, weak or interfered Wi-Fi, restrictive router settings, or a problem limited to one game or online service. The code does not identify which component is responsible.

Is this a PS4 or PS5 error?
Sony categorizes NW-31453-6 under PS4 error codes. Its PS5 error-code directory lists different network codes, including NW-102314-1 and NW-102636-8, and does not list NW-31453-6. Sony’s general directory separates the two platforms.
If you are using a PS5:
- Read the on-screen code again and record every character.
- Make sure the message was not from a PS4 game or application running on the PS5.
- Use the PS5 directory for the exact code. Do not apply PS4-specific instructions just because the codes look similar.
Check whether PSN is having a problem
Open Sony’s support hub and follow its PlayStation service-status link before changing router settings. Maintenance or an outage is more likely when several PSN functions fail at once, such as sign-in, the Store, parties, and multiple games. A green status page does not rule out a regional, ISP-routing, account, or game-server problem.
- Several devices or PlayStation services fail: an outage, ISP issue, or wider network fault is more likely.
- Only one PS4 or one game fails: a local network, console, NAT, or game-server issue is more likely.
- The error disappears without changes: a temporary service or routing problem is plausible, but the code alone cannot prove the cause.
Official PS4 troubleshooting steps
1. Test the PS4 connection
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
Record Obtain IP Address, Internet Connection, PlayStation Network Sign-In, NAT Type, and any displayed speed estimates. A passing test confirms that the basic test completed; it does not guarantee that every game, party, or PSN function is available.

2. Restart the modem and router correctly
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Turn them back on and wait until the internet connection is fully restored.
- Run the PS4 internet test again.
This restarts network equipment; it does not initialize the PS4 or erase games, saves, or account data.
3. Ask about router port filtering
Sony advises asking your ISP how to cancel or disable the router’s port filtering function, if possible. Router menus differ by model and provider, so do not disable every firewall or security feature blindly. If you change a setting, note its original value and restore it if there is no improvement. Sony’s advice refers to port filtering, not a universal port-forwarding recipe.
4. Try again later
If the checks and restart do not help, Sony’s final instruction is to try again later. Waiting is especially sensible during maintenance, when several services are affected, when other household devices are intermittently offline, or when the problem began suddenly without a local network change.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Diagnostics when the official steps do not resolve it
Test another network temporarily
Connect the PS4 to a phone hotspot only as a controlled test. If it works on the hotspot but not at home, the home router, ISP, filtering, or routing is more suspect. If the same error occurs on both connections, PSN, the console, or a particular service remains possible. A hotspot is not a guaranteed permanent gaming connection because of data limits, latency, carrier NAT, and mobile-network variability.
Try wired Ethernet
Connect the PS4 by Ethernet and repeat the test. Success over Ethernet while Wi-Fi fails points toward wireless interference, signal quality, band selection, or router configuration. It does not prove that buying a cable will fix every instance of NW-31453-6.
Compare services and devices
- Sign in to PSN.
- Open the PlayStation Store.
- Join a party.
- Try a different online game.
- Check other internet-connected devices in the home.
If only one game fails, check that game publisher’s server status and support resources rather than labeling the incident a PSN outage.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Review recent network changes
Ask whether the issue began after a router replacement, ISP migration, parental-control or firewall change, firmware update, a change in ISP-managed IPv4 configuration, or switching between wired and wireless networking. The error itself cannot tell you which change matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you change DNS, MTU, or forwarding rules?
Not as a first step. Sony’s official NW-31453-6 instructions do not prescribe a universal DNS or MTU value. Third-party discussions sometimes suggest MTU values such as 1400, 1450, 1453, or 1473, but those reports are anecdotal and vary; see this forum discussion and this video. Random values can create new connectivity problems.
Likewise, Sony mentions port filtering, not a guaranteed port-forwarding configuration. Avoid disabling all router security or opening ports without understanding the consequences. Make one reversible change at a time and keep the original settings.

When to contact your ISP or PlayStation Support
Contact the ISP when:
- The hotspot works but the home connection does not.
- Your router exposes port filtering, parental controls, or firewall settings you cannot interpret.
- Other household devices also lose connectivity.
- The problem started after an ISP, router, or firmware change.
Contact PlayStation Support when:
- The code persists after service restoration and local network testing.
- The PS4 fails on more than one network.
- Only this console or account is affected while other devices and services work.
Have the exact code, connection-test results, NAT type, affected games or services, and the time the problem began ready for the support agent.
What not to do first
- Do not factory-reset or initialize the PS4.
- Do not delete saved data or reinstall every game.
- Do not buy a new router solely because this code appeared.
- Do not assume an IP ban, account suspension, corrupted save, or failing hard drive.
- Do not treat a historical incident as proof of a current outage. NW-31453-6 was reported during heavy PSN traffic in 2013, but that is historical context, not a live status report; see Game Informer’s report.
The Bottom Line
For a PS4, start with the service-status check and Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, then power off the modem and router for at least five minutes before restarting them. If the error remains, investigate port filtering with your ISP, compare with Ethernet or a temporary alternate network, and wait or contact support. On PS5, verify the exact code first because NW-31453-6 is not listed as a native PS5 error.
