ROG XREAL R1: ASUS and XREAL’s 240Hz AR gaming glasses explained

ASUS ROG and XREAL announced the ROG XREAL R1 at CES 2026 as gaming glasses with a manufacturer-claimed 240Hz Micro-OLED display. The important qualification is that the R1 is a tethered wearable virtual-display accessory: it receives video from a handheld, PC or console rather than replacing that hardware with a self-contained VR or mixed-reality computer.

The companies call it the world’s first 240Hz gaming AR glasses, but that “first” is an ASUS/XREAL claim, not an independently audited industry record. The glasses combine 1,920 × 1,080-per-eye resolution, native 3DoF screen positioning, electrochromic dimming and a ROG Control Dock aimed at PC and console setups.

What was unveiled at CES 2026?

ASUS Republic of Gamers and XREAL introduced the ROG XREAL R1 on January 5, 2026, at CES in Las Vegas. It is a joint product rather than simply an existing XREAL model with an ASUS badge. ROG contributes the gaming-focused integration, software features and Control Dock, while XREAL supplies the wearable-display platform.

The announcement originally said the R1 would ship globally in the first half of 2026. A later availability announcement on May 15 opened global pre-orders and said worldwide shipping would begin June 1. Those announcements should not be confused with the later US store status.

Whether you’re commuting, flying, or unwinding at home, your personal cinema travels with you—bringing immersive entertainment wherever life goes.
  • Premium Display Quality – Smooth, Sharp, and True-to-Life: XREAL 1S delivers ultra‑smooth viewing with a 120Hz refresh rate in 3DoF mode and a 90Hz global refresh that eliminates flicker and blur. Advanced optical alignment ensures each image point locks perfectly to your eye, keeping visuals sharp, vivid, and lifelike.
  • Spatial Viewing Modes – Work, Watch, and Play on Your Terms: Shape your environment with XREAL 1S. Effortlessly switch between 0DoF follow mode, 3DoF anchor mode, Ultrawide Mode (32:9 or 21:9), Real 3D Mode, and Side-View Mode — ideal for both deep focus and entertainment. Pair with XREAL Eye to unlock 6DoF spatial anchoring, allowing for total freedom of movement while your screen stays pinned.
  • Native 3DoF Spatial Screen – Plug & Play Freedom: XREAL 1S brings your AR experience to life with native 3DoF spatial viewing powered by the X1 chip. No apps, no setup — simply connect to any USB‑C DP‑enabled device and step straight into expansive spatial content. With rock‑solid stability and smooth head tracking, every session feels natural and comfortable, free from motion sickness and distractions, keeping you fully immersed.
  • REAL 3D – Instant Spatial Depth for Everything You Watch: XREAL 1S debuts the world’s first on‑glasses REAL 3D spatial technology, instantly transforming all your content—from games and movies to apps and photos—into true 3D with a single switch. Experience richer depth and lifelike visuals across everything you watch or play, supported at up to 30fps with just 90–100ms latency for smooth, natural viewing.

The R1’s basic job is straightforward: put a large private screen in front of your eyes while the game continues to run on another device. That makes it closer to a premium wearable gaming monitor with spatial-display features than to a Meta Quest-style standalone headset.

What does “240Hz AR gaming glasses” actually mean?

A 240Hz display can refresh up to 240 times per second, but it cannot make a game render 240 frames per second by itself. The game, GPU or handheld, operating system, cable, dock and selected output mode all have to support the required signal. A console or portable PC may simply be unable to produce 240Hz in a particular game or resolution.

High refresh can make fast camera movement look clearer and can reduce the display’s contribution to perceived delay when the source is also producing high frame rates. It does not guarantee a competitive advantage: game-engine timing, frame pacing, input devices, network latency and GPU performance remain important.

ASUS lists a 0.01ms response time. That describes how quickly the display pixels are specified to change and should not be read as end-to-end system latency. The CES announcement’s 3ms motion-to-photon figure measures a broader part of the display pipeline. They are not interchangeable numbers.

The R1 is still Full HD. That is a sensible resolution for a compact, high-refresh wearable display, but a conventional 1440p or 4K monitor can show more detail, especially for desktop text, strategy interfaces and productivity work.

XREAL xbx a01+ AR Glasses, 147'' Big-Screen Display for Movies & Gaming
  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

How the R1 works with a ROG Ally

The strongest use case is a compatible ROG Ally connected over USB-C. ASUS describes the connection as plug-and-play and says the Ally’s own display can remain active while the glasses show the large virtual screen. That gives a handheld a private, cinema-sized view without carrying a separate monitor.

Armoury Crate SE is intended to provide controls for:

  • Brightness
  • Screen size
  • Aspect ratio
  • Visual effects
  • Tint level
  • Frame-rate boost
  • Spatial locking
  • 3D mode

ASUS said Armoury Crate SE version 2.2.10.0 was scheduled for release in June 2026. Software and firmware requirements can change, so Ally owners should check the current Armoury Crate SE and device updates rather than assume every installation exposes every R1 option immediately.

PC and console connectivity: the ROG Control Dock

For a desk or living-room setup, the ROG Control Dock is more than a cable adapter. It has two HDMI 2.0 inputs, one DisplayPort 1.4 input and a USB-C connection for the glasses. ASUS advertises one-click switching between connected sources, which is more practical than moving a single cable between a gaming PC, console and handheld dock.

The dock also provides access to ASUS features such as DisplayWidget Center and ROG GamePlus overlays. ASUS lists GamePlus tools including a stopwatch, crosshair, timer and FPS counter, along with HDR support and ROG Gaming AI features. Availability of individual overlays depends on the source and connection path; they should not be assumed to work universally in every game.

  • Experience True AR with 6 DoF, Spatial Anchor Anytime: Pairing with XREAL Eye, anchor your screen anywhere in your room, so it stays perfectly fixed in place—even as you walk around, lean in, or change your position. • REAL 3D – Turn everything you watch into an immersive 3D experience: REAL 3D Now Available on All One Series Glasses, instantly transforming all your content—from games and movies to apps and photos—into true 3D with a single switch. Experience richer depth and lifelike visuals across everything you watch or play.
  • 57°FOV, 171'' Spatial Screen – More Immersive Visual Experience: Experience a virtual screen starting at 171 inches wide, filling your view with blockbuster visuals, thanks to XREAL’s advanced optics and industry-leading 57° FOV. Powered by Sony’s 0.55' Micro-OLED display technology and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, get swept into your games or movies with immersion that rivals traditional home theaters—without the size, setup, or space concerns.

Before buying, check the entire signal chain:

  1. Confirm that the source outputs video through the required USB-C, HDMI or DisplayPort connection.
  2. Verify that the source and dock can provide enough power for the glasses and any connected device.
  3. Check whether the source supports the desired 1,920 × 1,080 resolution and refresh rate.
  4. Account for adapters, hubs and capture devices that may cap refresh rate or disable HDR.
  5. Confirm which features require the dock, including HDR, 3D conversion or GamePlus overlays.

A console installation is therefore less portable than the USB-C handheld setup: it normally involves the console, dock, power and a fixed display-source location.

What makes it AR, and what does it not do?

The R1 has transparent or electronically dimmable lenses and can position its virtual screen in relation to head movement. Its native 3DoF system supports Anchor Mode, in which the screen appears fixed in space, and Follow Mode, in which it follows the wearer’s view.

Three degrees of freedom track rotational movement such as turning or tilting your head. The cited product material does not describe room mapping, tracked controllers or full six-degree-of-freedom positional tracking. It is therefore more accurate to call the R1 wearable AR gaming glasses or a spatial virtual-display accessory, not a standalone mixed-reality environment.

Electrochromic dimming

Three manual tint levels let you trade outside visibility for contrast and privacy. A darker setting can make the virtual image easier to see in bright surroundings, while a lighter setting preserves more awareness of the room. Transparent glasses are not automatically appropriate for walking around while gaming; users still need to pay attention to traffic, obstacles and other hazards.

Instant 2D-to-3D conversion

The instant 3D feature converts ordinary 2D content into a simulated depth effect. That is different from a game rendered natively in stereoscopic 3D and should be treated as an optional visual mode rather than a guarantee of true 3D game support.

Who should buy the ROG XREAL R1?

Good matches

  • ROG Ally owners: The glasses can turn a compatible handheld into a private, large-screen gaming system while leaving the handheld display active.
  • Travellers: The glasses provide a personal screen where carrying a monitor is inconvenient, provided the source and power setup are available.
  • PC and console players: The dock suits users who want one wearable display shared between several HDMI or DisplayPort sources.
  • Fast-action players: Racing, first-person and action games can benefit from a high-refresh display when the source actually delivers high frame rates.

Reasons to choose something else

  • You want a standalone headset: The R1 supplies display and spatial features but not the computing hardware or independent software library of a VR/MR headset.
  • You need room-scale 6DoF: The published specification is native 3DoF, not full positional tracking.
  • You mainly need a cheap monitor: A conventional portable monitor can cost less and may offer higher resolution, easier text viewing or broader device compatibility.
  • You require wireless or cable-free operation: The R1 depends on a wired source connection and, for many setups, the dock and external power.
  • You expect 240Hz to guarantee lower latency: Refresh rate alone cannot overcome source, game, network or input limitations.

Bottom line: a fast wearable monitor, not a replacement for your gaming hardware

The ROG XREAL R1 is notable for combining an advertised 240Hz Micro-OLED panel with a 91-gram glasses form factor, ROG Ally integration and a dock designed for PC and console switching. Its most convincing value is private, large-screen play from a compatible handheld or existing gaming system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its limits are equally important: the image is Full HD, the glasses are tethered, 3DoF is not room-scale tracking, and the headline refresh rate depends on the complete source and connection chain. At $849 on the August 18 US listing, it is an enthusiast purchase for people who specifically value wearable privacy, high refresh and ROG ecosystem features—not a universal substitute for a monitor, handheld or VR headset.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
