Sony’s official PlayStation 5 Pro teardown arrived on April 21, 2025—months after the console was announced on September 10, 2024, launched worldwide on November 7, 2024, and independently opened by iFixit on November 15, 2024. The video and article reveal a substantially revised machine: a denser motherboard, redesigned airflow, a new fan, Wi‑Fi 7, liquid-metal thermal material, and a dedicated coin-cell battery hatch. They also show what has not changed: the Pro is still a warranty-sensitive, specialist-repair device, and its performance gains depend heavily on the game, display and accessories you use.
The timeline explains the “finally”
Sony’s original PlayStation 5 teardown appeared on October 7, 2020, shortly before that console’s launch. The Pro followed a different sequence:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

- September 10, 2024: Sony announced the PS5 Pro. Sony’s announcement listed a US launch MSRP of $699.99.
- November 7, 2024: The console launched worldwide. Sony’s launch release described the performance target, but not the internal layout.
- November 15, 2024: iFixit published an independent teardown. Its coverage arrived before Sony’s own engineering explanation.
- April 21, 2025: Sony published its engineer-led official teardown.
So Sony did not unveil the PS5 Pro in April 2025; it unveiled an inside look at a console already on sale. The delay makes the article retrospective rather than breaking launch news.
What Sony’s teardown confirms
- Three horizontal exterior blades are functional airflow paths, not decoration alone.
- Intake and exhaust areas are larger, with air moving through the bottom and rear of the chassis.
- The mainboard is densely arranged, with port placement adjusted to fit the revised design.
- A new fan is intended to move more air efficiently.
- The board carries a Wi‑Fi 7 module.
- The console uses liquid-metal thermal interface material.
- A separate underside hatch provides access to the coin-cell battery.
- There is an internal M.2 SSD slot and a connector for the optional disc drive.
These are engineering features Sony shows directly. They are not, by themselves, controlled measurements of noise, temperature or long-term reliability.

The three blades and larger vents are part of the cooling system
Sony says the Pro’s higher-performance hardware requires more airflow. The three exterior slits provide additional paths for air, while larger intake and exhaust surfaces help move it through the console. Sony also says it spent substantial effort on heat-sink placement and fan efficiency.
The design rationale is clear: the Pro needs to dissipate more heat than the earlier PS5 while fitting its revised board and graphics hardware into a console enclosure. The teardown does not establish that every PS5 Pro is quieter or cooler than every PS5. Those conclusions require comparable independent acoustic and thermal testing under the same workload and room conditions.
Inside the denser motherboard
The compact board accommodates the Pro’s larger graphics-oriented architecture, altered port arrangement, storage expansion and wireless hardware. Sony’s launch specifications provide the performance context:
| Claim | What it means |
|---|---|
| 67% more compute units | Sony’s comparison with the current PS5; it increases available graphics-processing capacity. |
| 28% faster memory | Sony’s advertised memory-speed improvement, useful for feeding the expanded graphics workload. |
| Up to 45% faster rendering | A maximum Sony claim, not a guaranteed result in every game. |
| Up to double or triple ray-tracing rate | Sony’s claim for advanced ray tracing in supported workloads. |
| PSSR | Sony’s AI-assisted image-reconstruction technology for compatible games. |
Actual results vary by title, patch, graphics mode, developer implementation and display. A game must be updated to use Pro-specific features; the silicon alone does not turn every PS5 title into a Pro-enhanced one.
The battery hatch is the most practical maintenance improvement
Sony shows a dedicated coin-cell battery compartment on the underside. Its retaining screw stays attached to the cover, reducing the chance of losing the screw during replacement. iFixit identified this as a meaningful improvement over earlier PS5 designs, where reaching the CMOS battery involved more disassembly.
This is better access, not a blanket declaration that the console is user-serviceable. The machine remains powered electronics, and opening it can expose you to damage, overheating, electric shock or fire risks. Sony warns that disassembly can affect the manufacturer’s guarantee.
Liquid metal and the new fan require specialist handling
Liquid metal remains the thermal interface between the main processor package and its heat-spreader system. Sony says it selected the material after testing its safety and uses it alongside the revised heat sink and fan arrangement to support the Pro’s higher output.
Replacing or disturbing liquid metal is not a beginner repair. Spillage, contamination or incorrect reapplication can damage components or impair cooling. A battery replacement through the provided hatch is a very different task from removing the board or thermal assembly.
Storage: 2TB inside, M.2 expansion outside the factory capacity
The PS5 Pro includes a 2TB internal SSD, although system software reserves part of that capacity. Sony also provides an internal M.2 expansion slot.
| Requirement | PS5 Pro specification |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe |
| Key | M.2 Key M |
| Capacity | 250GB to 8TB |
| Supported lengths | 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm or 110mm |
| Maximum width | 25mm |
| Maximum thickness | 11.25mm including the heat-dissipation structure, with separate limits above and below the board |
| Unsupported type | M.2 SATA |
Sony requires a heat sink or other heat-dissipation solution when the drive does not include one. Compatibility depends on the complete physical dimensions, not just capacity or advertised sequential-read speed. Sony also explains that an M.2 SSD installed in an original PS5 can be moved to a PS5 Pro by following the applicable transfer procedure.
See Sony’s storage guidance and the official safety and specification guide before buying a drive.
The missing disc drive changes the price calculation
The PS5 Pro is sold as an all-digital console. The box includes the console, DualSense controller, 2TB SSD, horizontal feet, HDMI cable, power cord, manuals and Astro’s Playroom; it does not include a disc drive.

Internet access is required to pair it with the console during setup. Sony lists compatibility with PS5 model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-7000, covering the Slim family and PS5 Pro. The Pro’s horizontal feet are included, while a vertical stand is a separate accessory.

The teardown confirms a Wi‑Fi 7 module, while Sony’s product information says the console remains compatible with Wi‑Fi 6 and Wi‑Fi 5 routers. Wi‑Fi 7 can improve wireless bandwidth, transfer performance and stability when paired with suitable networking equipment and a good local connection.
It does not guarantee lower ping or higher frame rates. Online latency still depends on the router, interference, home network, internet service, congestion and game server. Ethernet remains the more predictable option for a fixed console.
Does every PS5 game benefit?
No. Sony says Pro-enhanced features are available in selected PS5 games and vary by title. Depending on the game, enhancements may include:
- Higher or more consistent frame rates.
- Improved ray-traced lighting and reflections.
- Higher-resolution presentation.
- Better reconstruction through PSSR.
- Game Boost improvements in some PS4 titles.
The Pro can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, but Sony notes that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible. A 60Hz television also cannot display the full benefit of a 120Hz mode, and compressed online video can hide subtle image-quality differences.
Is the PS5 Pro easier to repair?
| Better than before | Still difficult or risky |
|---|---|
| Dedicated, captive-screw coin-cell battery hatch | Deep disassembly remains complex |
| Accessible expansion areas and M.2 slot | Liquid-metal handling requires care and experience |
| Modular, separately installable disc drive | Opening the console may affect warranty coverage and carries safety risks |
The fairest description is incrementally more maintainable in selected areas, not “easy to repair.” iFixit’s device page and teardown are useful references, but they are not a promise that deep repair is safe for casual owners.
Who should buy the Pro?
New buyers with a 4K display
The Pro makes the strongest case for someone buying a first PS5 who has a good 4K television or monitor, values ray tracing and stable performance, and is comfortable paying the premium for the highest-performance console version.

Owners of the launch PS5
Upgrading is most compelling if you play Pro-enhanced games, use a 4K/120Hz display, want better image quality without giving up performance modes, or need the included 2TB capacity. The case is weaker for an owner with a 1080p or 60Hz screen, a library of unpatched games, or little interest in ray tracing.
PS5 Slim owners
The same software and display qualifications apply. A Slim owner should compare the visible benefit in the games they actually play against the cost of replacing a functioning console.
Physical-media users
Budget for the separate disc drive before deciding. If discs and 4K Blu-ray are central to your use, the all-digital base configuration understates the real purchase cost.
Repair-minded owners
The battery hatch and modular storage are genuine conveniences. They do not make the Pro a broadly user-serviceable platform, especially once repairs reach the thermal assembly or motherboard.

Sony’s teardown confirms a real engineering revision rather than a simple speed increase: denser hardware, a redesigned airflow path, a new fan, Wi‑Fi 7, liquid metal and easier coin-cell access support the Pro’s larger graphics workload. It also confirms the limits of the upgrade. Performance claims are Sony maximums, benefits depend on supported games and suitable displays, the disc drive and vertical stand are separate purchases, and deeper repairs remain specialized. The Pro is easiest to justify as a premium 4K gaming machine—not as a universal upgrade or an easy-to-open console.
