In traditional rendering, the GeForce RTX 5070 is broadly an RTX 4070 Super-class card, not a dramatic generational leap. TechSpot measured the RTX 5070 just 1% faster at 1440p and 5% faster at 4K across a 16-game rasterized test suite. Its real advantages are Blackwell features, faster GDDR7 memory and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. Both cards still carry 12GB of VRAM, so neither is an ideal uncompromised 4K purchase for a long ownership period.
That makes the buying decision unusually dependent on price. At the RTX 5070’s $549 launch MSRP, it was a sensible new 1440p option. At the roughly $790.99–$799.99 US prices listed by PC Gamer in August 2026, the value case largely collapses unless you specifically need Nvidia features or DLSS 4.
Why the RTX 5070 is compared with the 4070 Super
Nvidia launched the RTX 5070 in March 2025 at a $549 MSRP, while the RTX 4070 Super launched in January 2024 at $599. Nvidia’s marketing emphasized a claimed 20% traditional-raster improvement over the regular RTX 4070 and much larger gains with DLSS 4. For a buyer choosing between products in this price class, however, the 4070 Super is the more meaningful predecessor because it was the stronger 40-series model at launch.
Nvidia’s comparison with the RTX 4070 should not be read as a 20% advantage over the RTX 4070 Super. Independent testing places the two cards much closer together. Nvidia’s launch announcement explains its feature and performance claims, while PCWorld’s review frames the 4070 Super as the practical comparison.

Specifications: newer technology, familiar capacity
| Specification | RTX 5070 | RTX 4070 Super | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Blackwell | Ada Lovelace | The 5070 supports newer Nvidia features. |
| CUDA cores | 6,144 | 7,168 | The newer card actually has fewer cores. |
| Memory | 12GB GDDR7 | 12GB GDDR6X | Capacity is unchanged; the 5070 uses newer memory. |
| Memory bus | 192-bit | 192-bit | There is no wider bus on the 5070. |
| Memory bandwidth | 672GB/s | Approximately 504GB/s | The 5070 has about 33% more bandwidth. |
| Frame generation | DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation | DLSS 3 Frame Generation | The 5070 can generate multiple AI frames in supported games. |
| Launch MSRP | $549 | $599 | The 5070 launched $50 lower. |
The higher bandwidth can help in particular games, but it does not turn the RTX 5070 into a higher performance tier. Both GPUs retain 12GB of VRAM, which is the more consequential long-term similarity.
Rasterized gaming performance is almost tied
In TechSpot’s 16-game test suite, the RTX 5070 averaged approximately 1% faster than the RTX 4070 Super at 1440p and 5% faster at 4K. Those are measured traditional-rendering results, not frame-generation output. The complete testing methodology and game results are available in TechSpot’s RTX 5070 review.
| Game or condition | RTX 5070 versus RTX 4070 Super |
|---|---|
| 16-game average, 1440p raster | Approximately 1% faster |
| 16-game average, 4K raster | Approximately 5% faster |
| Marvel Rivals, 1440p | Approximately 3% faster |
| Stalker 2, 1440p | Approximately 9% slower |
| Cyberpunk 2077 raster, 4K | Approximately 6% faster |
| Hogwarts Legacy, 1440p | Approximately 21% faster |
| The Last of Us Part I, 1440p | Essentially identical |
The spread matters more than the average. Bandwidth-sensitive workloads can favor the 5070 by double-digit percentages, while other games show no gain or favor the 4070 Super. A 1% average advantage is not something an owner would normally feel during play.
Ray tracing does not create a clear winner
The RTX 5070 has newer ray-tracing cores, but TechSpot found it generally close to the 4070 Super in actual ray-traced games. It roughly matched the older card in Metro Exodus Enhanced, trailed it in Alan Wake II and Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, and was broadly similar at 4K. Both cards can reach low frame rates in demanding RT scenes even with upscaling.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle also demonstrates the shared 12GB constraint: maximum ray tracing can push the RTX 5070 into severe performance or stability problems. That is an extreme setting-specific example, not evidence that ordinary 1440p gaming fails.
DLSS 4 is the RTX 5070’s meaningful upgrade
Blackwell’s defining gaming feature is DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. Instead of generating one AI frame between rendered frames, supported implementations can create multiple frames. Nvidia highlighted titles including Hogwarts Legacy, Stalker 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2, and PCWorld reported support in more than 75 games at the time of its review. See Nvidia’s supported-feature announcement and PCWorld’s testing.
Multi Frame Generation can produce much higher displayed frame rates, but those frames are not equivalent to independently rendered frames. The underlying frame rate still affects latency and responsiveness, and results vary with camera movement, user-interface elements, motion artifacts, CPU limits and implementation quality. Nvidia’s “up to 2×” language describes selected DLSS 4 configurations, not a universal doubling of native performance.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4 OC mode: 2640MHz/Default mode: 2610MHz (Boost Clock)
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.125-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Therefore, DLSS 4 makes the RTX 5070 a more feature-rich RTX 4070 Super rather than a much faster graphics processor. Players who use games without DLSS support, or who prefer native rendering, receive only the small raster uplift.

Both cards have 12GB, so neither solves the capacity concern at this price level. At 1440p, sensible texture settings and upscaling can deliver excellent results. At 4K with maximum textures and heavy ray tracing, memory pressure can cause stutter, texture pop-in, reduced minimum frame rates, instability or forced setting reductions.
PCWorld criticized the RTX 5070’s 12GB capacity and 192-bit bus for 4K use, while TechSpot’s Indiana Jones testing showed how an extreme ray-tracing configuration could force a safe-mode recovery. Game patches, texture quality, DLSS mode and RT settings materially change requirements, so 12GB is a risk rather than an automatic failure. Buyers planning several years of 4K gaming should examine 16GB alternatives.
Power, case fit and board-partner differences
TechSpot measured gaming power consumption as broadly similar between the RTX 5070 and RTX 4070 Super. The upgrade is not primarily an efficiency purchase.
Nvidia’s compact Founders Edition uses a practical two-slot design, but partner cards differ in length, thickness, cooling, connectors and factory clocks. Before buying any specific model, check:
- Power-supply capacity and the card’s required connector or adapter.
- Case length, height and radiator or front-fan clearance.
- Whether the card occupies two or more expansion slots.
- Airflow in a small-form-factor case.
- Whether the model is standard-clocked or factory overclocked.
2026 pricing changes the verdict
The launch-price recommendation does not survive every street price. PC Gamer’s August 2026 US price check listed RTX 5070 examples at $799.99 from Best Buy and Newegg and $790.99 from Walmart. On August 10, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported a substantial US RTX 50-series price spike, including a reported 36% increase in RTX 5070 median pricing. These are dated, volatile snapshots rather than permanent prices: PC Gamer’s price check and Tom’s Hardware’s report provide the context.
At $549, the RTX 5070 is the better new Nvidia purchase than a 4070 Super at its $599 launch price. Near $800, it is difficult to justify for performance alone. A used or open-box 4070 Super can be attractive when substantially cheaper, but no reliable current new-retail price is established for remaining stock, so condition, warranty and seller reputation matter.

Who should buy which card?
Existing RTX 4070 Super owners
Keep the card if your goal is higher native or rasterized frame rates. TechRadar’s comparison likewise recommends against upgrading for a roughly 1–3% gain, with DLSS 4-specific use cases as the main exception. Move only if a particular game you play benefits substantially from Multi Frame Generation and you accept its latency and image-quality trade-offs. Source: TechRadar’s comparison.
New 1440p builders
Buy the RTX 5070 when it is close to $549, DLSS 4 matters to you, and a comparable 4070 Super costs more. It is a strong 1440p GPU and a clear upgrade from older cards such as the RTX 3070, as PCWorld observed.

Choose a 4070 Super when it is meaningfully cheaper, comes from a trustworthy seller and includes acceptable warranty coverage. Do not pay a collector’s premium for discontinued stock; at prices close to a new RTX 5070, the older card lacks Blackwell-only features.
4K and long-term buyers
Neither 12GB card is an ideal uncompromised 4K, multi-year choice. Consider a 16GB model instead, especially if you intend to use maximum ray tracing and high-resolution textures.
Alternatives worth checking
Radeon RX 9070
AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 is the most relevant alternative for buyers who prioritize 16GB of VRAM and raster performance. It uses a different upscaling and frame-generation ecosystem, and Nvidia can remain preferable for CUDA, some creator applications, ray tracing and software integration. Its current August 2026 price was not established, so compare actual prices rather than assuming it is cheaper. Product details: AMD Radeon RX 9070.
RTX 5070 Ti
The RTX 5070 Ti launched at $749 with 16GB, making it a more capable Blackwell option for demanding games. PC Gamer listed a 16GB model around $1,029.99 in August 2026, so the premium was also heavily inflated. Check whether the price gap is rational before choosing it. Product page: RTX 5070 Ti.

Final verdict
The RTX 5070 is not a bad GPU; it is a modest generational refresh whose raw performance usually lands at RTX 4070 Super level. Buy it new when the price is near $549 and you value DLSS 4, Blackwell features or a compact current-generation card. Keep an RTX 4070 Super if you already own one and want a conventional performance upgrade. At August 2026-style prices near $800, wait for normalization, compare the 16GB Radeon RX 9070, or move to a genuinely faster tier. For long-term 4K gaming, treat the shared 12GB capacity as the decisive limitation.
