Generally, no. An already purchased digital Xbox game cannot normally be moved from one Microsoft account to another. Microsoft licenses digital goods rather than selling them as transferable property. You can still share eligible access through a Home Xbox, reinstall the game on another console, request a refund in some cases, or gift a separate copy to the intended account.
What “transfer ownership” can mean
People use “transfer” for several different actions. Only one of them—moving the purchase from Account A to Account B—is generally unavailable.
| What you want to do | What is actually possible |
|---|---|
| Move a purchased game to another Microsoft account | Generally not supported; the entitlement remains linked to the purchasing account. |
| Install the game on another Xbox | Yes. Network transfer, external storage, or redownloading moves files, not ownership. |
| Let another household profile play | Often possible through the purchaser’s Home Xbox, subject to Microsoft and title-specific rules. |
| Give someone their own copy | Use Xbox’s gifting flow before redemption, where available. |
| Correct a purchase made on the wrong account | Request a refund, then repurchase on the intended account if Microsoft approves it. |
| Sell a redeemed digital game | No general supported method; Microsoft generally prohibits transferring or reselling digital-good licenses. |
Why Microsoft ties the game to an account
Microsoft’s Usage Rules for Digital Goods describe digital goods as licensed, not sold. The license is intended for personal, non-commercial use, and users generally may not transfer or resell it except where Microsoft specifically permits that. Selling a console containing downloaded games also does not give the buyer rights to those games.
Microsoft’s Services Agreement, effective September 30, 2025, likewise restricts transferring software licenses or rights to access services unless Microsoft authorizes it. These are Microsoft’s platform terms; consumer-law rights can vary by jurisdiction.

User and device licenses
Xbox digital games use both a user-based license and a device-based license. The user license follows the Microsoft account that bought the game. The device license is associated with one designated Home Xbox. That is why another profile may be able to play on the purchaser’s Home Xbox without becoming the owner.
What you can do instead
Move the installation to another Xbox
Xbox network transfer and external-storage tools copy installation data. They do not change the account recorded as the purchaser. The receiving account still needs a valid user or device license to launch the game.
Use Microsoft’s network game transfer instructions for copying files and its transfer troubleshooting guide if the copy fails. If the game is on another console, sign in with the purchasing account and install it from the owned-games library. Designating that console as the purchaser’s Home Xbox may allow other profiles there to play.
Share access with Home Xbox
Home Xbox is the closest supported alternative to an account transfer. Microsoft’s Xbox digital-games Usage Rules state that other users on the designated Home Xbox can use eligible games covered by its device license. The purchaser can generally play on a different console while signed in with the purchasing account.

On current Xbox software, the setting is usually under Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox. Menu wording can differ by console software version or region, so the account relationship matters more than a fixed path.
- Sign in with the account that bought the game.
- Open the current My home Xbox setting.
- Designate the console as that account’s Home Xbox, if appropriate.
- Switch to the other profile and test the game.
Microsoft’s cited rules limit Home Xbox changes to five during a rolling one-year period. Sharing does not put the game in the other person’s library, give them a transferable license, or allow unrestricted simultaneous use on multiple consoles. Only designate a console for people you trust, and never hand over your Microsoft password.
Gift a new copy
When a title and region support it, use the Store’s Buy as gift option. Enter the recipient’s email or use the supported gifting method, and make sure the recipient redeems the gift on the intended Microsoft account. Check country, platform, edition, and compatibility first. Some bundles, preorders, add-ons, consumables, and other products may not be giftable. Gifting creates a new entitlement; it does not relocate an existing purchase. See Xbox’s digital gifting guidance.
How to fix a game bought on the wrong account
Microsoft Support does not provide a general account-to-account transfer service. The realistic remedy is a refund request followed by a new purchase on the correct account.

- Check which account appears in the Microsoft order history.
- Stop downloading or playing the game while you consider a refund.
- Sign in with the purchasing account and use the official Xbox digital-goods refund process.
- If approved, buy the game on the intended account or gift it.
- Keep the order confirmation and refund decision for any follow-up.
Refund approval is not guaranteed. Eligibility depends on factors such as region, purchase type, usage, and Microsoft’s rules at the time. If the game has already been played, approval may be less likely. Do not repurchase before checking the refund outcome if avoiding a duplicate charge matters.
Can you sell a digital Xbox game?
Generally, no. Microsoft’s Usage Rules prohibit transferring or reselling digital-good licenses except where specifically permitted. A marketplace listing, “primary account” sale, or account handoff is not a supported way to sell one game.
- Do not give a buyer your Microsoft login or recovery information.
- Avoid “cheap game” offers that provide credentials instead of a code.
- Be skeptical of promises that Microsoft Support will later move the game.
- Codes without clear region and platform details can fail to redeem.
Account deals can expose payment information, privacy data, saves, and recovery controls, and can end with loss of access or payment disputes. Changing an email address, gamertag, or password also does not split an entitlement into a new account.
What happens when you sell the Xbox console?
The buyer receives the hardware, not your digital library. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules specifically state that selling a device does not convey the rights to digital goods stored on it.

A Game Pass subscription belongs to the subscribing account. Downloading a catalog game does not turn it into a permanent purchase. Access can end when the subscription ends or when a title leaves the catalog.
Home Xbox sharing may let other profiles use eligible subscription benefits or games on the designated console, subject to current plan, title, device, and account rules. It is not a permanent transfer. See Xbox’s Game Pass management guidance for the current subscription arrangement.
Xbox 360 games and backward compatibility
Xbox 360-era licensing has historical rules that should not be confused with current Xbox One and Xbox Series behavior. Microsoft’s Xbox rules describe transferring 360 game files to another Xbox 360 using storage, but playing them still depends on the appropriate account and license.

Moving a 360 installation is therefore not account ownership transfer. A backward-compatible 360 title played on a newer Xbox remains subject to the applicable digital-license system. Legacy marketplace behavior can differ by title, so check its current Store listing and Microsoft support.
DLC, virtual currency, saves, and achievements
Add-ons and virtual goods
DLC, season passes, and add-ons can have title-specific, publisher-specific, device, or account rules. Do not assume an add-on shares exactly like the base game. Microsoft’s Services Agreement treats virtual goods and game currency as limited, personal, revocable, non-transferable licenses rather than property that can be sold for money.
Saves and achievements
Installation files, cloud saves, achievements, add-ons, and the purchase license are separate account-linked elements. Using the same account on another console does not transfer the purchase to a different account, and a new account should not be expected to inherit the old account’s achievements, profile history, or purchase history.
Troubleshooting: another account sees “Buy”
- Confirm that the purchasing account is signed in or that the console is still its Home Xbox.
- Check the order history to identify the account that actually bought the game.
- Verify that the title and edition match; a different platform or bundle can appear as a separate product.
- Check whether access came from Game Pass and whether the subscription is active and the title remains in the catalog.
- Review region restrictions, account status, and service connectivity.
- Check add-on-specific requirements if the base game works but DLC does not.
If Home Xbox sharing stopped working, the Home Xbox may have changed, the purchaser may need to be signed in, the subscription may have expired, or Microsoft may be unable to validate the entitlement temporarily.

An already redeemed digital Xbox game generally stays with the Microsoft account that purchased it. You can move files, share eligible access on one Home Xbox, gift a separate copy, or seek a refund and repurchase after a wrong-account purchase. None of those actions turns the original entitlement into a transferable license.
