“Microsoft games” generally use your Microsoft account’s Xbox profile for social features. To play with someone, search for their exact Xbox gamertag in the Xbox console, Windows Xbox app, or Xbox mobile app, add them as a friend, then send a separate invitation from the game.
First, choose what “add someone” means
| What you want to do | Use this feature |
|---|---|
| Connect socially and see another player online | Xbox friend request |
| Bring the player into a lobby, world, or session | In-game invite |
| Manage a child’s screen time, content, or purchases | Microsoft Family group |
| Register a console or other device | Microsoft account device management |
| Let someone use purchased games or subscriptions | Licensing and Home-console rules |
Microsoft Family groups use organizer and member roles and invitations sent to an email address or phone number; they are not Xbox friend lists. See Microsoft’s Family Safety instructions.
What you need before sending a request
- Your Xbox/Microsoft account signed in on the device you will use.
- The other player’s exact Xbox gamertag, including any displayed suffix, spacing, or punctuation.
- The correct profile when search results contain similar names.
- The same game, or editions and platforms that support the multiplayer connection you want.
Ask for the person’s Xbox gamertag rather than a Steam, PlayStation, Discord, Nintendo, or game-specific nickname. Never ask for their Microsoft password.
Add someone on an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open the social, People, or friends area. Dashboard labels can differ by Xbox software version.
- Choose the control for finding or searching for people.
- Enter the exact gamertag.
- Select the matching profile and verify the identity.
- Choose Add friend, Follow, or the equivalent control shown.
- If the account requires approval, have the recipient accept the request from Xbox notifications or their social/friends area.
Xbox describes finding and adding friends across Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and the Xbox mobile app at xbox.com/live.

Add someone in the Xbox app for Windows
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the Microsoft account you use for gaming.
- Open the app’s social or friends area.
- Search for the player’s gamertag.
- Open the correct profile; common names can produce multiple results.
- Select Add friend or the friend-request control.
- Use the app’s party, chat, or game-invite controls, or launch the game and invite the player there.
Add someone in the Xbox mobile app
- Open the Xbox mobile app and sign in to the intended Xbox/Microsoft account.
- Open the social, friends, or search function. Navigation names vary between app releases.
- Search by exact gamertag and open the correct profile.
- Add the player or send the friend request.
- View incoming requests and manage friends in the app’s social area.
Invite the new friend into a game
Adding a friend and inviting them to play are separate actions.
- Launch the same multiplayer-capable game.
- Create or join its lobby, world, party, or session.
- Open the game’s player or social menu.
- Select the Xbox friend.
- Choose Invite to game, Invite players, or the game’s equivalent.
- Have the other player accept the invitation.
The invitation control belongs to the individual game. A friend can appear online but remain unavailable when the game lacks multiplayer, cross-play is unsupported or disabled, a lobby is full, an account lacks required access, or the invitation must be sent from the game’s own menu.
Minecraft: edition and platform matter
Minecraft uses Microsoft account sign-in, but its multiplayer features depend on edition, device, account settings, and world or server type. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are not interchangeable multiplayer environments. Cross-play, servers, and Realms support differ by platform; consult the official Minecraft platform comparison for the relevant combination.

The player may need to be an Xbox friend before appearing in an invitation list. Realms is a hosted multiplayer option, not a requirement for every Minecraft session; its availability and terms vary by edition and platform.
If you cannot find or add the person
- Recheck every character in the gamertag, including a displayed suffix.
- Confirm they gave you their Xbox gamertag, not another service’s username.
- Search in Xbox’s social system, not the Microsoft Store.
- Confirm both of you are signed in to the intended Xbox profiles.
- Check whether the recipient has blocked or restricted incoming requests.
- For a failed request, check Xbox privacy and online-safety settings, then sign out and back in, update the app, and retry.
Xbox privacy controls are separate from ordinary Windows app permissions. Microsoft points Xbox users to Xbox online-safety and privacy controls, while Windows privacy settings cover capabilities such as contacts, microphone, camera, and location. See Microsoft’s privacy-settings guidance and its Windows app-permission documentation.
Child accounts and privacy restrictions
A child account may be unable to send or receive requests, chat, or join multiplayer because of communication and online-safety settings. A parent or family organizer may need to approve the connection or change the Xbox privacy setting. The other player’s settings, age-related restrictions, or a wrong signed-in profile can cause the same symptoms.

Adding an account to a Microsoft Family group is a parental-control action, not a way to bypass Xbox restrictions or create a friend connection. Family Safety can manage limits across supported Windows, Xbox, and Android devices; its family-group process is documented at support.microsoft.com and its app/game-limit guidance at this Family Safety page.
If the friend appears but cannot be invited
- The game may not support multiplayer or the required cross-play combination.
- You may own incompatible editions, such as different Minecraft editions.
- One account may lack the game, an applicable multiplayer entitlement, or permission to play online.
- Cloud, PC, console, and mobile versions may expose different features.
- The lobby or world may be full, or one player may be offline, appearing offline, or not fully signed in.
- The game may require its own in-game social menu rather than the Xbox guide.
Friend status does not transfer ownership of a game or subscription. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules distinguish user and device licenses, Home-console use, Play Anywhere, Game Pass, and Minecraft/Realms terms. Check the specific game and current Xbox requirements before assuming both players can access it.

Sending a friend request is a social feature and does not by itself require buying a product. Depending on the game, platform, and current Xbox policy, online console multiplayer or access to the game may require an eligible subscription or ownership. Verify current eligibility at Xbox Game Pass; plan names and benefits can change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the other player’s email address?
Usually no. Search Xbox for the person’s exact gamertag. Email or phone invitations are used for Microsoft Family groups, not ordinary Xbox friend requests.
Can I add a PC player from an Xbox console?
Yes, when the PC player uses an Xbox/Microsoft profile and the game supports that platform and cross-play combination.
How do I accept an Xbox friend request?
Open Xbox notifications or the People/Friends area on your console, Windows Xbox app, or Xbox mobile app, then open the pending request and accept it.

Common causes are a wrong profile, privacy or child-account restrictions, a blocked account, or a changed interface label. Verify the account and check Xbox online-safety settings.
Can Xbox friends always play Minecraft together?
No. Java and Bedrock, supported devices, cross-play, servers, Realms, and account settings determine whether a particular pairing works.
