Short answer: Epic deliberately withheld Fortnite from Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming (then commonly called xCloud) in 2021 because it viewed the service as competition for its PC business. That was not permanent. On May 5, 2022, Epic and Microsoft launched a free, browser-based Fortnite streaming arrangement. The game remains available through that route without a paid Game Pass subscription, although it is not necessarily exposed in every Xbox app, console library, or cloud-gaming interface.
What Epic decided in 2021
During an April 2021 deposition connected to Epic Games v. Apple, Epic vice president of business development Joe Kreiner confirmed that the company had made a deliberate decision not to offer Fortnite on Microsoft’s xCloud service. The stated reason was that Microsoft’s cloud-gaming efforts were considered “competitive with our PC offerings.” Contemporary reporting on the exchange is available from Engadget and GameSpot.

That statement establishes Epic’s strategic classification of xCloud, not a complete list of motives. Part of the deposition immediately after the answer was redacted, so the public record does not show every technical, commercial, or negotiating consideration behind the decision.
What “competitive with our PC offerings” meant
In this context, Epic’s PC offering included the Epic Games Store and its direct relationship with PC players. A cloud service can change where a player obtains a game, signs in, buys content, and interacts with a platform. Epic apparently viewed Microsoft’s Xbox-controlled service as capable of competing with that PC ecosystem.

The precise financial rationale was never publicly established by the unredacted deposition. Reports speculated about issues such as transaction economics and V-Bucks revenue, but it is not accurate to present Microsoft’s revenue share as the proven reason. The strongest evidence supports the broader competitive-PC explanation.
Why GeForce NOW was treated differently
Epic supported Fortnite on Nvidia GeForce NOW while declining xCloud. Contemporary coverage described the services as strategically different rather than evidence that Epic opposed cloud gaming itself.
| Service in the 2021 discussion | How it was characterized | Why the distinction mattered to Epic |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce NOW | A remote-PC-style service associated with existing PC storefront libraries, including Epic Games Store and Steam titles. | It could function more like streaming a user’s PC environment than moving the game into a competing console ecosystem. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) | A Microsoft-controlled catalog tied to Xbox accounts, commerce, and the broader Xbox service structure. | Epic regarded Microsoft’s cloud efforts as competition for its PC business. |
The distinction should not be reduced to “Epic liked Nvidia but disliked Microsoft.” It was a difference in platform control and distribution model.

The 2022 partnership reversed the Fortnite decision
On May 5, 2022, Microsoft announced a partnership with Epic to make Fortnite playable free through Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported browser-enabled devices. Microsoft’s announcement described the launch as the first free-to-play title offered through the service: Xbox Wire.
Epic’s announcement specified a browser-first experience and account linking between Microsoft/Xbox and Epic accounts: Epic Games. The timing also mattered. After Fortnite was removed from Apple’s App Store, browser streaming offered a way to reach iPhone and iPad users without distributing a conventional native App Store application. Epic’s Free Fortnite FAQ discusses Apple’s restrictions affecting cloud services such as xCloud and GeForce NOW. The deal’s exact contractual purpose was not publicly disclosed, so the Apple connection is best understood as strategic context.
Can you play Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming now?
Yes. Epic’s current Fortnite Xbox Cloud Gaming page says that players can stream the game with a free Microsoft account, a compatible browser-enabled device, and a suitable internet connection. A paid Xbox Game Pass subscription is not required for this Fortnite route.

The original 2022 launch documentation recommended 5 GHz Wi-Fi as the optimized option and said 2.4 GHz could work; it also listed Android 6.0 or later at launch. Those were launch-era specifications, not a universal statement of every current device requirement.
Why Fortnite may be missing from an Xbox app or console menu
“Available on Xbox Cloud Gaming” does not mean “listed in every Xbox interface.” Epic’s launch documentation explicitly said the browser version was not available to launch through the Xbox Cloud Gaming mobile app, the Xbox app on Windows, or the Xbox console game library.
| Where you look | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Supported web browser | The intended route for the free Fortnite cloud experience. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming mobile app | Epic’s documentation says the browser version is not launched from this app. |
| Xbox app on Windows | Epic’s documentation says it is not launched from this app. |
| Xbox console game library | Epic’s documentation says it is not presented there as an ordinary library launch. |
| Native Xbox installation | A separate download-and-install experience, not the browser streaming arrangement. |

The wrong launch surface is open
If you are searching the Xbox app or a console library, switch to the official browser route. The unusual presentation is a characteristic of this partnership, not proof that the service disappeared.

The wrong account is linked
Progress and purchases can appear missing when Microsoft is connected to a different Epic account. Check the account pairing before creating a new profile or unlinking an existing one.
Your device or region is not supported
Availability depends on the service’s supported regions, devices, and browsers. Epic’s current cloud-streaming support documentation is at Epic Support; neither the launch announcement nor the current page establishes a single permanent worldwide device list.
The stream is playable but feels poor
High latency, unstable Wi-Fi, or congestion can cause delayed controls, soft video, and connection drops. A stronger connection, closer access point, or wired connection where practical can help, but cloud streaming cannot remove the latency of the network path.

You assume Game Pass is required
It is not required for the official free Fortnite browser route. That exception does not make the wider Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog free; other games can have different subscription requirements.
Did Epic permanently change its cloud strategy?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion. Epic changed its position for Fortnite in a specific browser-based partnership with Microsoft. It does not show that every Epic game became available through Xbox Cloud Gaming or that Epic abandoned its concerns about competing PC storefronts.
The episode is therefore not a simple story of Epic rejecting cloud gaming and later admitting it was wrong. Epic supported a remote-PC-style service in 2021, withheld Fortnite from Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem for competitive reasons, and later cooperated when a browser arrangement offered valuable reach—particularly to users on Apple devices.
