Answers and explanations

Color Category Answers Why they fit
Yellow Dental additions BRIDGE, CROWN, FILLING, VENEER Each is a dental restoration or addition used to repair, cover or replace part of a tooth or a missing tooth.
Green Metaphors for a dramatic and chaotic event CIRCUS, ROLLER COASTER, SOAP OPERA, WHIRLWIND All four can be used figuratively for a situation full of confusion, intensity or constant twists.
Blue Second words in David Lynch titles DRIVE, HIGHWAY, PEAKS, VELVET They complete Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet.
Purple What “JET” might refer to AIRPLANE, BLACK, HOT TUB NOZZLE, NFL PLAYER A jet can be an airplane; “Black” can refer to the New York Jets’ color context in the clue set; a hot-tub jet is a nozzle; and an NFL player can be a New York Jet.

How the puzzle works

Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are marked by four difficulty colors, and you can make up to four mistakes. A new puzzle appears at midnight in your time zone, according to TechRadar’s June 30, 2025 guide, and it is played through the New York Times Games site.

What made this grid difficult

The Lynch set uses title fragments

The blue group does not ask for complete film or series names. It takes only the second word, which makes familiar titles easier to overlook among unrelated-looking entries.

The final group depends on multiple meanings

The purple group is the most indirect: “jet” shifts between an aircraft, a sports reference, a hot-tub component and the word “black.” That wordplay is why it is generally the last group to fall.
