You unlock the Legendary Animal Map during Hosea’s Chapter 2 mission Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego, then track each target by following clue trails in its marked territory. Only five Legendary Animal kills count toward 100% completion; the Giaguaro Panther additionally requires Master Hunter rank 9.
Use the table below for every territory, then follow the hunt and pelt procedures to avoid losing crafting progress.
What you need to know before hunting
- The Legendary Animal Map is obtained during Hosea’s Chapter 2 bear mission and is stored in Satchel > Documents > Maps.
- Legendary hunts begin when you enter the correct territory and receive the on-screen notification. Eagle Eye then reveals a sequence of clues.
- Five Legendary Animal kills are enough for the 100% completion requirement; the game does not require all 16 for that milestone.
- Legendary pelts are used by the Trapper for outfits and equipment. If one is lost or cannot be skinned, the defeat remains recorded and the required crafting materials become available through the Trapper.
How to get and use the Legendary Animal Map
Unlock the map in Chapter 2
Complete Hosea’s Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego. The mission introduces the bear hunt and provides the map. You can continue exploring afterward and track available animals in free roam.
Open the map from your Satchel
- Open the Satchel.
- Select Documents.
- Open Maps.
- Choose Legendary Animal Map.
The map is a reference layer rather than a replacement for the normal world map. When you ride into a marked territory, watch for the Legendary Animal notification; that confirms the hunt can begin in that area.

Use the in-game marker as the final authority
Territory boundaries can be easy to misread on a printed or custom map. Check the marker shown by your own Legendary Animal Map immediately before traveling, especially when a location sits near a river, settlement or regional border.
All 16 Legendary Animal locations
The labels below identify the territories used by the in-game map. New Austin targets are best treated as late-game or epilogue destinations because access there can expose story and map spoilers.
| Legendary Animal | Territory and landmark | Progression or planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear | Grizzlies East, near O’Creagh’s Run | Northern mountain route; introduced through Hosea’s Chapter 2 mission. |
| Legendary Buck | Big Valley, northwest of Strawberry | Central-western route with open ground around the valley. |
| Legendary Bighorn Ram | East of Cattail Pond | Mountain and high-country travel. |
| Legendary White Bison | Lake Isabella, Grizzlies West | Cold-weather mountain hunt; prepare clothing and supplies accordingly. |
| Legendary Elk | East of Bacchus Station, in the Cumberland Forest area | Northern interior route. |
| Legendary Beaver | Kamassa River and Butcher Creek area | Waterways and wooded ground can make clue searches less direct. |
| Legendary Boar | Bluewater Marsh, north of Lagras | Swamp route; visibility and footing are difficult. |
| Legendary Coyote | Scarlett Meadows, Lemoyne | Central-southern route through open prairie and brush. |
| Legendary Fox | North of Rhodes in Scarlett Meadows | Keep the in-game marker open because the territory is close to roads and farms. |
| Legendary Bull Gator | Lakay and the Bayou Nwa swamps | Progression-gated; an aggressive swamp target. |
| Legendary Tatanka Bison | Manteca Falls, New Austin | New Austin access is generally a late-game consideration. |
| Legendary Pronghorn | Rio del Lobo Rock, New Austin | Late-game New Austin route. |
| Legendary Cougar | Gaptooth Ridge, New Austin | A high-risk predator hunt in a late-game region. |
| Legendary Giaguaro Panther | South of Bolger Glade | Unlocks at Master Hunter rank 9; do not expect it to appear before that requirement. |
| Legendary Moose | Roanoke Ridge, north-east New Hanover | Northern forest route; use the marker to distinguish the correct ridge territory. |
| Legendary Wolf | Cotorra Springs, Ambarino | Mountain route with cold-weather exposure. |
How a Legendary hunt works
1. Prepare before entering the territory
Carry a suitable rifle or bow, healing items, horse Stimulant and clothing appropriate to the region. Rockstar’s guidance specifically recommends Bitters and horse Stimulant. Keep your horse close enough to resupply without abandoning the search.
Rank #2
2. Trigger the hunt notification
Ride into the marked area and move through it until the game announces that you have entered Legendary Animal territory. If the message does not appear, leave the area, check the map marker again and return after dealing with unrelated encounters or activities.
3. Follow the clue trail with Eagle Eye
Activate Eagle Eye to reveal highlighted investigation points. Inspect every clue before moving to the next one. A clue trail can include tracks, droppings, fur or other signs; skipping an investigation point can prevent the next clue from appearing.
4. Use field-guide information when conditions matter
Rockstar says that completing more entries in the Animal Field Guide provides additional information about a Legendary Animal’s preferred time of day and weather. Treat those entries as planning help, while the territory notification and clue trail remain the immediate requirements for starting the encounter.
5. Use pheromones only after a sighting notification
Do not waste pheromones while merely searching for clues. Rockstar advises using them only after the game confirms a sighting. They are an aid after the target has appeared, not a substitute for entering the correct territory and completing the investigation trail.
6. Make the kill and skin the animal
Legendary Animals are tougher than ordinary wildlife, and predators can close distance quickly. Once the animal is down, skin it and collect the pelt and other materials before leaving the area.

7. Deliver materials to the Trapper
Take the pelt and materials to the Trapper. Legendary components unlock special outfits, equipment and other crafting options rather than functioning only as ordinary hunting-sale items.
Rank #4
Which Legendary Animals count toward 100% completion?
The 100% checklist requires five Legendary Animal kills, not all 16. This is a quantity requirement, so you can plan around the five hunts that best fit your current region, equipment and progression. The Giaguaro Panther is separate from that basic access question because it is locked behind Master Hunter rank 9.

The cash sale is lost, but the hunt is not erased
Rockstar Support states that a lost pelt, or a pelt that cannot be skinned, cannot be sold for in-game cash. However, the Trapper records the Legendary Animal’s defeat and keeps the materials needed for Legendary crafting available.
What to do next
- Continue playing rather than immediately restarting the hunt.
- Visit a Trapper after the loss has been registered.
- Check the Legendary crafting recipes and outfit requirements at the Trapper.
You should still skin and deliver a pelt whenever possible, because carrying it yourself is the way to receive its normal sale value and avoid an unnecessary trip. The loss safeguard protects crafting progress; it does not restore the missed cash payout.
Planning an efficient route
Group hunts by region
- Ambarino and the Grizzlies: combine the cold northern targets during one mountain trip and bring warm clothing.
- Big Valley, Cumberland Forest and Roanoke Ridge: these central and northern routes are practical while traveling through New Hanover and the western valleys.
- Lemoyne and the Bayou: expect marshy terrain, reduced visibility and more dangerous predators around the swamp targets.
- New Austin: leave these hunts for an appropriate late-game visit if you want to avoid story or access spoilers.
Choose targets by risk
Timid animals can flee while you are investigating, so keep Eagle Eye ready and avoid firing until you have a clear shot. Predators and the Bull Gator demand more defensive preparation, healing supplies and room to maneuver. A route that minimizes travel is not always the safest route; select targets according to your current weapons and comfort with the region.
Optional print companion
If you prefer a physical reference beside the game, the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide is described as covering Legendary Animal tracking, rare pelts and crafting. Retailer price, stock and purchase terms vary, so treat it as an optional companion rather than a requirement—the in-game map and clue system are sufficient to complete the hunts.
