Minecraft: Java Edition 1.12.2 is a Java 8-era game. For Forge, legacy modpacks, and manually launched servers, use a 64-bit Java 8 runtime (shown as 1.8.0_xxx) unless that specific launcher or modpack documents another requirement. The current official launcher normally manages a suitable bundled runtime for a vanilla installation, so a separate system-wide Java installation is often unnecessary.
Quick answer: Java 8
Minecraft 1.12.2 refers to Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition. It belongs to the Java 8 generation. Java 8, Java 1.8, and command-line versions beginning with 1.8.0 describe the same major release.
A version such as 1.8.0_381 means Java 8, update 381. The update number is not a universal Minecraft requirement: different launchers, operating systems, vendors, and historical installations can ship different Java 8 updates. A recorded 1.12.2 launch command used a bundled 1.8.0_51 runtime, but that is an example rather than a mandatory build (Mojang issue record).
Vanilla 1.12.2 and the official launcher
The modern official launcher can download and select a bundled Java runtime for an installation. Mojang’s launcher documentation distinguishes this bundled runtime from a user-selected Java executable (launcher issue record). Consequently, java -version in your operating-system terminal may report Java 17 or 21 while the launcher is using its own Java 8 executable for a 1.12.2 profile.

- Vanilla profile: Start with the launcher’s bundled-runtime option. Installing Java separately is usually unnecessary.
- Custom Java setting: A profile can override the bundled runtime with a path to Java 11, 17, 21, or another installation.
- Third-party launcher: It may bundle Java, select Java per instance, or use a global Java setting. The names and locations of these controls differ.
Launcher interfaces change between operating systems and releases. Look in the selected installation’s advanced settings for labels such as Java executable, Java runtime, or bundled Java.
What Java does Forge 1.12.2 need?
Use Java 8 for Forge 1.12.2. Forge’s documentation maps Minecraft 1.12 through 1.16 to JDK 8 (Forge Java-version documentation). The Forge installer, a Forge client, a development workspace, and a Forge server can each be started by a different Java executable, so making Java 8 available does not by itself guarantee that every component will use it.
The official Forge files page lists 1.12.2 builds including recommended 1.12.2-14.23.5.2859 and latest listed 1.12.2-14.23.5.2864 at the time of the page’s listing (Forge 1.12.2 files). Those build numbers do not change the basic Java-generation recommendation.
JRE or JDK?
- A 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is sufficient to run the game or a server.
- A 64-bit Java Development Kit (JDK) is appropriate when compiling mods or using a Forge development environment.
- OpenJDK distributions such as Eclipse Temurin 8 or Azul Zulu 8 can be suitable Java 8 choices; Oracle’s archive has separate licensing terms that vary by use.
Choose a 64-bit build on a 64-bit operating system. A 32-bit runtime can impose low memory limits and cause allocation failures, especially with modpacks or servers.

This command checks the java found through your system path. It does not prove which executable the official launcher uses. The decisive check is the Java executable selected in the 1.12.2 installation profile or the executable written into a server script.
How to select Java 8 for a 1.12.2 installation
- Create or select a Minecraft 1.12.2 installation in your launcher.
- Open that installation’s advanced or Java settings.
- Select the bundled Java runtime, if offered. If you need a custom runtime, browse to a 64-bit Java 8 executable.
- Save the profile and launch unmodded 1.12.2 once.
- Install or enable Forge only after vanilla starts successfully.
- If Forge then fails, add mods in small groups and inspect the launcher log and crash report for the selected Java path and the first reported mod or loader error.
Typical paths vary by vendor and operating system. Examples include:

Running a 1.12.2 server with the right Java
Vanilla server
A basic server command is:
java -Xms1G -Xmx2G -jar server.jar noguiHere, -Xms1G sets the initial heap and -Xmx2G sets the maximum heap. Memory allocation is independent of Java-version compatibility. The server also requires acceptance of Minecraft’s EULA before it will start normally.
Force Java 8 explicitly
If PATH or JAVA_HOME selects the wrong runtime, replace java with the full Java 8 path. On Windows, quote paths containing spaces:

Use the launch files or command generated and documented by the Forge build. If that command resolves the wrong Java, substitute the full path to Java 8:
"/path/to/java8/bin/java" -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar forge-server.jar noguiThe exact Forge jar and startup-file names differ by build. Confirm the filename in the server directory instead of assuming that forge-server.jar is universal.

Can 1.12.2 run on Java 11, 17, or 21?
Sometimes a vanilla or patched setup can run on a newer Java release, but those versions are not the normal compatibility target for 1.12.2. Forge, coremods, older launchers, and legacy modpacks are especially likely to fail outside Java 8. If a 1.12.2 installation crashes or Forge refuses to start, Java 8 is the first compatibility change to make.
Mojang moved the bundled Java target to Java 17 beginning with Minecraft 1.18 (Java 17 transition notes). That change applies to newer Minecraft releases; it does not turn 1.12.2 into a Java 17 game.

Which Java 8 build should you install?
For most users, install a current, reputable 64-bit Java 8 distribution rather than hunting for one historical update. The important property is the Java 8 major version, not a universal update number such as 8u51. A particular old modpack, launcher, graphics driver, or server wrapper may document a narrower range; follow that documentation when it conflicts with the general recommendation.

- Azul Zulu offers Java 8 runtime and JDK downloads with separate support options.
- Oracle’s Java archive is another source, but review its current licensing terms for your use.
Keep Java 8 for 1.12.2 rather than making it the default runtime for unrelated modern applications. If several Java versions are installed, configure each launcher instance or script explicitly.
Common Java errors and what they indicate
UnsupportedClassVersionError
This usually means the selected runtime is too old for the program being loaded. Check which component produced the error before changing Java: a modern launcher tool or mod may require a newer runtime, while an old Forge stack can have a separate compatibility problem.
Forge crashes while vanilla works
Confirm that the Forge profile points to 64-bit Java 8, then check the Forge build and mod versions. A successful vanilla launch only proves that vanilla started; it does not prove that the Forge installer, loader, or every mod uses the same executable.
The server uses the wrong Java
Put java -version immediately before the launch command, or replace java with a quoted full path to Java 8. This exposes PATH and JAVA_HOME mistakes.

The path contains spaces
On Windows, wrap the complete executable path in quotation marks. Without them, a path such as C:Program Files... is parsed as separate command arguments.
Java 8 is installed but nothing changes
The launcher may still be using its bundled runtime or a previously saved custom path. Recheck the installation profile’s Java executable setting rather than relying on the system installation.
Memory allocation fails
Verify that the selected Java is 64-bit and that -Xmx does not exceed available system memory. Increasing RAM does not correct an incompatible Java major version.
Bottom line
Use Java 8 for Minecraft 1.12.2. Let the official launcher manage its bundled runtime for a normal vanilla profile; select a 64-bit Java 8 executable explicitly for Forge, modpacks, installers, and servers when they are not using that bundled runtime. Java 17 and newer belong to later Minecraft generations and should not be chosen merely because they are newer.
