You cannot copy or clone a PS4’s internal drive through the console. To replace it safely, make a full USB backup, install a compatible 2.5-inch SATA drive, reinstall PS4 system software, and restore the backup. The replacement drive is initialized during setup, but a successful backup preserves supported saves, applications, screenshots, clips, settings, and user data.
If you only need more game space and the internal drive still works, do not open the console: format a USB drive as PS4 extended storage and move games there. That process erases the external drive, so copy anything important from it first.
Choose the right transfer method
| Your situation | Use this method | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Failing, corrupted, undersized, or slow internal drive | Full backup, internal-drive replacement, system-software reinstallation, and restore | Replaces the console’s internal storage and requires opening the PS4 |
| Healthy internal drive; you only want more room | USB extended storage | Leaves the internal drive in place and stores PS4 games and applications externally |
| Only game progress matters | USB saved-data backup or PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Games can be downloaded again; saves are protected separately |
| Moving to another console | PS4-to-PS4 or PS4-to-PS5 transfer tools | Uses a different migration process than replacing a drive |
Sony’s official internal-drive procedure is documented in its PS4 HDD upgrade guide. A generic PC sector clone is not Sony’s supported method and may not boot because PS4 storage is tied to the console’s system-software and encryption setup.
What you need for an internal replacement
- A compatible 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD for a laptop-style drive bay. Confirm the physical dimensions and connector; an M.2 NVMe drive is not the PS4’s internal format.
- A separate USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT for the full backup. Sony says it should have at least twice the space required by the backup file; use a larger drive if necessary. See Sony’s PS4 support information.
- A USB drive (or free space on the backup drive after the backup is verified) for the system-software reinstallation file.
- A long Phillips screwdriver, internet-connected PC or Mac, and the same PlayStation Network account credentials used on the old console.
- Your PS4 model number. Sony separates the physical instructions for original PS4 CUH-1000/1100/1200, Slim CUH-2000, and Pro CUH-7000 systems.
An SSD can be quieter and may shorten some loading screens, but PS4 hardware limits the benefit of expensive high-end models. Capacity, reliability, warranty, and correct fit matter more than headline SATA speed. Keep the original drive until the replacement has been tested.

Back up the old PS4 before opening it
Synchronize trophies
Connect to the internet, sign in to the relevant PlayStation Network account, open the Trophies area, and allow synchronization to finish. Unsynchronized trophy information may not be recoverable through the replacement process.
Create the full PS4 backup
- Connect the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted backup drive directly to the PS4.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore.
- Select Back Up PS4 and choose the available data options.
- Confirm and wait for completion. Do not turn off the console or disconnect the USB drive.
The full backup can include installed applications, saved data, screenshots, video clips, settings, and supported user data. Options vary with system software and available space. Confirm that the backup completed before removing the old drive.
PlayStation Plus is not required for a USB backup. Cloud storage is an additional saved-data copy, not a substitute for preserving the installed library, clips, settings, and other local content.
Make a separate save backup when the drive is unstable

- Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- If you use PlayStation Plus, upload the saves to cloud storage as a second copy.
- Do not format the backup or old drive until a save has been opened successfully on the replacement system.
Replace the internal drive
Shut down with Power > Turn Off PS4, not Rest Mode. Wait until the indicator is completely off, unplug the power and other cables, and work on a stable surface.
PS4 Pro (CUH-7000 series)
Remove the HDD-bay cover, remove the retaining screw, slide out the mounting bracket, remove its four drive screws, swap the drive, and reinstall the bracket and cover.
PS4 Slim (CUH-2000 series)
Slide off the HDD-bay cover, remove the retaining screw, pull out the drive and bracket, remove the four screws, swap the drive, and reinstall it. Do not remove the rubber inserts from the screw holes, and do not over-tighten the screws.
Original PS4 (CUH-1000/1100/1200 series)
Remove the top or HDD access panel for your chassis, remove the PlayStation-symbol retaining screw, pull out the drive caddy, replace the drive using the four screws, and reinstall the caddy and panel. Follow the model diagrams in Sony’s upgrade guide.

Reinstall PS4 system software
Prepare the USB correctly
- Format the installation USB as FAT32 or exFAT and leave at least 1 GB free.
- Create this exact folder structure, using uppercase names:
PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP
Download Sony’s full PS4 reinstallation file from the PS4 system-software page, not the smaller ordinary update file. The filename must be exactly PS4UPDATE.PUP inside the UPDATE folder.
Install in Safe Mode
- Connect the USB to the PS4.
- Hold the power button and release it after the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable if requested.
- Select Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) and follow the prompts.
This option initializes the replacement internal drive. It does not erase the old drive, but anything already on the new destination is deleted.
Restore games and data
- Complete initial setup and sign in with the same PlayStation Network account.
- Connect the USB containing the completed backup.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4.
- Select the backup and confirm the warning that destination data will be erased.
- Wait for the restore and any restart to finish without powering off the console.
A valid full backup can return installed applications and local data, but be prepared for redownloads. A damaged or incomplete backup, account authorization, game patches, add-ons, or missing downloads can require content from Library after signing in. Digital purchases remain linked to the purchasing account.
If you made only a save backup, use Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage. The same account used for the original copy is required.

Verify before discarding the old drive
- Expected capacity appears in Settings > Storage.
- Several saved games open and load.
- Digital and disc games launch, and add-ons or updates appear.
- Screenshots, clips, user profiles, and download history are present.
- The PS4 remains stable after a full restart.
Move games to USB extended storage instead
Use this route when the internal drive is healthy and you simply need room. PS4 extended storage requires system software version 4.50 or later. Formatting dedicates the USB drive to the PS4 and erases its existing contents; copy those files elsewhere first. Extended storage is not a full system backup and does not replace the internal system drive.
Format and move applications
- Connect the USB drive.
- Go to Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices and select Format as Extended Storage.
- Open Settings > Storage > System Storage.
- Press OPTIONS, choose Move to Extended Storage, select games or applications, then choose Move > OK.
PS4 games and applications can run from the extended-storage drive. Saved data, themes, screenshots, and clips should still be backed up separately.
Disconnect safely
Open the Quick Menu and select Sound/Devices > Stop Using Extended Storage > OK. Unplugging while the drive is active can cause corruption, data loss, or damage to the console or drive. Sony’s storage guidance is available at USB extended storage on PS4 and its storage-transfer instructions.

USB backup drive is not recognized
- Confirm FAT32 or exFAT formatting and enough free space.
- Connect directly rather than through a hub; try another cable or USB port and restart the PS4.
- Make sure it is not configured as another console’s extended storage.
- Do not format the only copy of important files.
The backup will not fit
Use a larger USB drive, copy irreplaceable clips elsewhere and remove them, or back up saves only and redownload games later. Moving games to extended storage first can reduce local content, but protect saves before deleting applications.

“Reinstallation file cannot be found”
Check that the path is exactly PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP, both folders are uppercase, the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, and you downloaded the reinstallation file rather than the ordinary update file. Check that your browser did not rename it.
Replacement drive is not detected
Power off, reseat the drive and caddy, check screw alignment, and confirm it is a compatible 2.5-inch SATA model. Test the drive in a computer or enclosure if possible. Keep the original drive for diagnosis.
The old drive is failing
Minimize use if it clicks, disconnects, or reports read errors. Copy saves first, then irreplaceable media, account recovery information, and finally attempt the full backup. A complete backup may fail on a deteriorating drive.
Licenses, add-ons, or saves are missing
Sign in to the purchasing account, check Library, restore licenses if prompted, and allow updates to download. For saves, confirm that the original account was used and restore from the USB or cloud copy.

Large libraries, clips, and mechanical USB drives can take a long time. Do not interrupt the process unless the console is clearly frozen for an extended period and Sony support advises recovery.
If you are changing consoles
A PS4-to-PS5 move is separate from an internal-drive replacement. Use Sony’s PS4/PS5 transfer guidance. Digital PS4 purchases can be downloaded from the destination account’s library, disc games can be installed from their discs, and compatible PS4 extended-storage drives can be connected to a PS5 for game data. Save transfer still requires the appropriate USB, cloud, or network method.
Bottom line
For a failing or undersized internal drive, use Sony’s backup → replacement → reinstallation → restore sequence and keep the original drive until your saves and games are verified. For extra space without opening the console, use extended storage, remembering that formatting erases that external drive and that it is not a backup.
