Is Intel Pentium Good for Gaming? 2024 Benchmarks and Buying Advice

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: an Intel Pentium can be acceptable for older games, indie titles and some esports games, but it is usually a poor choice for a new general-purpose gaming PC. The recent Pentium Gold G7400 has only two cores and four threads, so modern open-world, simulation, multiplayer and high-refresh games can suffer from CPU bottlenecks, stutter and weak 1% lows even when the average frame rate looks playable.

This is a 2024-focused comparison. Prices and availability change, and “Pentium” covers several very different desktop, laptop and low-power chips.

Which Intel Pentium do you have?

Model identification matters more than the Pentium badge. Intel’s catalog includes separate Pentium Gold desktop processors, Pentium Silver low-power chips and older generations with very different performance. See Intel’s product families at Intel ARK.

  • Pentium Gold G7400: Alder Lake, LGA1700, 2 cores/4 threads, 3.70 GHz base frequency, 6 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support and UHD 710 graphics. Specifications: Intel.
  • Pentium Gold G6400: Comet Lake, LGA1200, 2 cores/4 threads, 4.00 GHz base frequency, 4 MB cache, 58 W TDP, DDR4-2666 and UHD 610 graphics. Specifications: Intel.
  • G6500/G6600 and related models: still dual-core/four-thread Comet Lake parts. Higher clocks help lightly threaded games but do not remove the basic modern-game limitation.
  • G4560, G5400 and older Pentiums: common in used PCs; age, motherboard and memory support can matter as much as the CPU.
  • Pentium Silver J5040, N5030 and similar chips: low-power laptop, mini-PC or embedded processors. They are not equivalent to desktop Pentium Gold parts; Intel’s application metrics show substantial differences among models (Intel PDF).
  • Mobile Pentium Gold: performance depends on the laptop’s power limit, cooling and memory configuration.

Key specifications and practical positioning

Pentium Gold G6600 Comet Lake/LGA1200 2/4 UHD 630-class Light gaming with a modest GPU Poor value if platform costs approach a Core i3
Pentium Gold G7400 Alder Lake/LGA1700 2/4 UHD 710 Cheapest newer entry platform or temporary build Limited threads and weak iGPU
Pentium Silver J5040 Low-power platform 4/4 Low-power integrated graphics Mini-PC and basic computing Not a conventional gaming CPU

What the available benchmark evidence shows

PassMark’s retrieved database listing places the G7400 at roughly 6,700 CPU Mark points and the G6400 at roughly 4,100. These are changing database averages, not game measurements, and they do not predict 1% lows, shader-compilation hitching or frame-time consistency (PassMark CPU list; G7400 comparison).

Gamers Nexus tested the G7400 in real games and maintains CPU charts that include it (review video; CPU charts). Results must be read with the test GPU, RAM, resolution, preset, game version and driver in mind. A controlled average-FPS result from a discrete-GPU test cannot be applied to UHD 610 or UHD 710 graphics.

How performance changes by game type

  • Older, indie and lightweight games: commonly playable at 1080p with suitable settings and memory.
  • Esports games: average FPS may be high at low settings, but busy fights or background tasks can expose poor minimums. That makes a Pentium a weak choice for a 120 Hz or 144 Hz target.
  • Modern AAA games: the two-core/four-thread design is more likely to cause CPU saturation, stutter and inconsistent frame delivery.
  • Open-world, simulation, MMO and large multiplayer games: these frequently stress CPU-side world, player and simulation work, so average FPS alone can be misleading.
  • Higher resolutions: 1440p or 4K can shift more work to the GPU, but they do not remove CPU limits in simulation-heavy scenes.

Third-party calculators such as PC-Builds list estimated figures (for example, estimates for Cyberpunk 2077 and Grand Theft Auto V), but their hardware and settings are not transparent enough to treat as controlled benchmark results (PC-Builds estimate).

Integrated graphics or a dedicated GPU?

Using UHD 610 or UHD 710

These integrated GPUs are primarily for display output and video playback. Older or lightweight games may work at reduced resolution and low settings; demanding modern games generally require severe compromises. Dual-channel memory is important because the iGPU shares system memory bandwidth. Any claimed FPS should identify whether it came from UHD graphics or a discrete card.

Adding a discrete graphics card

A Pentium makes the most sense with an inexpensive or older GPU when the target games are lightly threaded, the motherboard and RAM are already owned, and a future CPU upgrade is realistic. Pairing a G7400 with an expensive high-end GPU is technically possible but usually unbalanced: at 1080p the CPU can prevent the card from being fully used. A modest card and sensible settings are a better match.

AMD Ryzen™ 5 9600X 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
  • Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
  • 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
  • 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
  • For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
  • Cooler not included

When buying a Pentium makes sense

  • You already own a compatible motherboard and memory.
  • The processor and complete platform are dramatically cheaper than a Core i3 or Ryzen alternative.
  • You mainly play older games, browser games, indie titles or occasional lightweight esports.
  • You need a temporary system while saving for a larger upgrade.
  • The board, BIOS, power delivery and cooler provide a verified upgrade path.

When to choose something else

  • You are building a new gaming PC and a Core i3 or Ryzen 3/5 costs only modestly more overall.
  • You expect stable 60 FPS in modern AAA games, high-refresh competitive play or heavy simulation titles.
  • You plan to use a midrange or high-end GPU.
  • You must buy an older LGA1200 motherboard and RAM solely for a G6400-class chip.
  • The listing does not state the exact model, socket, memory type or included cooler.

Pentium versus Core i3 and Ryzen alternatives

Compare the whole platform, not just the processor sticker price. Include the motherboard, RAM, cooler, storage, power supply and graphics card. Core i3 processors generally provide more cores and threads than the two-core/four-thread Pentiums discussed here, improving frame-time consistency and useful lifespan. Used Core i5-10400/11400-class systems can also be stronger values when the complete PC is priced fairly. AMD Ryzen options may offer more cores or substantially stronger integrated graphics, depending on model; consult AMD’s current desktop range at AMD Ryzen.

If a Pentium platform is only slightly cheaper, the extra cost of a Core i3 or Ryzen system usually buys smoother minimums, broader game compatibility and more headroom for a future GPU. Conversely, an already-owned LGA1700 board can make a cheap G7400 useful as a stopgap.

Used-PC checks and common failure modes

  • Confirm the exact CPU model rather than accepting “Pentium” as a specification.
  • Check socket and chipset: LGA1200 and LGA1700 are not interchangeable.
  • Verify BIOS support, DDR4/DDR5 compatibility and dual-channel memory.
  • Inspect for bent motherboard socket pins, missing cooler, proprietary power supplies and locked OEM BIOS.
  • Check the graphics card, storage health and power-supply quality; the CPU may not be the system’s actual bottleneck.
  • Confirm display outputs if you intend to use integrated graphics.

Decision guide

Your situation Recommendation
Existing Pentium, older/light games Keep it, use dual-channel RAM and a modest GPU if needed.
Extremely cheap complete used PC Buy only after checking the exact model, GPU, PSU, RAM and upgrade path.
New build from scratch Prefer Core i3 or Ryzen when the total platform premium is modest.
Modern AAA, simulation or high-refresh gaming Avoid Pentium; choose a newer multi-core CPU.
G7400 with a planned near-term CPU upgrade Potentially acceptable on a suitable LGA1700 board, subject to BIOS, VRM and cooling support.

Final verdict

Intel Pentium is playable in selected low-cost scenarios, but not generally recommended for a new 2024 gaming build. The G7400 is the most relevant newer desktop example and is faster than older G6400-class parts, yet its two cores and four threads remain restrictive. Keep or buy one only when the price is exceptionally low, the games are light, or an existing platform and clear upgrade plan make the compromise worthwhile. Otherwise, a Core i3, used Core i5 or suitable Ryzen system is the safer gaming value.
