If Pokémon GO Snapshot is black, frozen, unsupported, unsaved, or failing to complete a research task, start with permissions and the correct snapshot route. Enable Camera and Photos access, restart and update the app, check AR compatibility, then use Settings → Advanced Settings → Refresh Game Data and Clear Cache. Reinstall only after those steps. The title references 2024, but AR requirements have changed since then: current Niantic guidance requires iOS 15 or later for iPhone AR and, from March 2025, a 64-bit Android device that supports ARCore.
First identify which snapshot is failing
“Snapshot not working” describes several different failures. Identify the stage before changing settings:
- Black or frozen camera: usually a permission, camera conflict, compatibility, or app-state problem.
- No Pokémon appears: check AR support, placement, lighting, and whether you used the right snapshot mode.
- Unsupported-device message: the phone may run Pokémon GO but lack certified AR hardware or software.
- Photo is taken but missing from the gallery: check Photos, media, or storage permission and free space.
- Photo saves but research does not update: the task may require a particular subject or entry point.
- No Smeargle or other surprise: photobombs are occasional, not guaranteed.
Use the correct Pokémon GO snapshot route
Buddy Snapshot
- From the Map View, tap your Buddy image in the lower-left corner (or open your Buddy from your Trainer Profile).
- Tap Play!.
- Place the Buddy, or choose the available static-background/non-AR option.
- Tap the camera button.

GO Snapshot of a Pokémon you caught
- Open Pokémon storage.
- Select the Pokémon.
- Tap the camera icon on its detail page.
- Place it in the GO Snapshot scene and tap the camera button.
This is not the same as taking a picture during a wild encounter. Current Niantic guidance says photos of previously caught Pokémon use AR under the newer AR system.

Wild-encounter AR
During a wild encounter, use the AR toggle near the top-right of the encounter screen. A wild-encounter picture does not automatically substitute for a Buddy Snapshot or a caught-Pokémon Snapshot task.
Quick fix sequence
- Allow Pokémon GO to use the camera and, if needed, Photos or storage.
- Force-close Pokémon GO and restart the phone.
- Update Pokémon GO and install a stable operating-system update.
- Check the in-game AR options and retry in a bright area over a flat surface.
- Use Poké Ball menu → Settings → Advanced Settings → Refresh Game Data, then reopen the app.
- Use Settings → Advanced Settings → Clear Cache.
- Check ARCore or iOS compatibility.
- Reinstall the official app only if the problem remains.
Refreshing game data can turn off Adventure Sync, and clearing cache can reset some preferences, so check those settings afterward. Niantic’s troubleshooting guidance covers updates, connection checks, refresh data, cache, and reinstall procedures at its Android guide and its iOS guide.
Fix camera, Photos, and storage permissions
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps and select Pokémon GO.
- Tap Permissions.
- Allow Camera.
- Allow Photos and videos, Files and media, or the equivalent permission if shown.
- Reopen Pokémon GO.

iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to Apps and tap Pokémon GO.
- Enable Camera.
- Enable Photos access if captures are not being saved.
- Reopen the game.
On some iOS releases, use Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera to enable Pokémon GO. Apple explains these controls at its privacy and permission guide.
Run a phone-level camera test
Open the regular Camera app. If it is also black, investigate the phone, another app holding the camera, or a system privacy restriction. If the regular camera works, revoke and re-enable Pokémon GO’s permission, restart the phone, and retry. Missing permission controls can indicate parental controls, enterprise management, or another system restriction.
When a photo is taken but not saved
- Enable Photos, media, or storage access.
- Check free device storage.
- Look in recent photos and any Pokémon GO album.
- Check for a permission prompt behind the game.
- Take a new snapshot after changing access.
Niantic says GO Snapshot images are saved to the device when the required photo permission is enabled.

Fix AR and unsupported-device errors
Pokémon GO has separate behavior for AR encounters, AR Buddy interactions, and GO Snapshot. Do not treat “turn AR off” as a universal fix. Niantic’s AR change notice says a Buddy can use a static background when AR is disabled or unsupported, while GO Snapshot photos of previously caught Pokémon require AR under the updated behavior: AR changes in Pokémon GO.
- Open Pokémon GO and tap the Poké Ball menu.
- Tap Settings and find the AR-related options.
- Enable the option required by the feature you are testing.
- Close and reopen the game.
- Retry over a well-lit, flat surface while moving the phone slowly.
Current iPhone requirement
Niantic’s current GO Snapshot documentation lists AR on iPhone running iOS 15 or later. Avoid relying on older 2024 compatibility lists.
Current Android requirement
From March 2025, Android AR requires a 64-bit device capable of supporting ARCore. On a compatible phone, install or update Google Play Services for AR from Google Play, restart the phone, and retry. Google explains ARCore certification and requirements at Google Play Services for AR support. Installing ARCore cannot add missing hardware certification.

- Confirm Camera permission and test the normal Camera app.
- Force-close Pokémon GO, then restart the phone.
- Temporarily disable battery-saver, screen-overlay, accessibility, privacy, or device-management tools that may interfere with camera access.
- Update Pokémon GO and the phone system.
- Refresh Game Data, then clear the in-game cache.
- Check ARCore certification or the iOS requirement.
- Try a Buddy Snapshot with the static-background option, if offered, to separate an AR problem from a general camera problem.
- Reinstall from the official store only if all earlier steps fail.
Move slowly over a textured, well-lit surface when placing a Pokémon. An unsupported-device warning means AR may be unavailable even though the rest of Pokémon GO runs.
Android system cache
On Android, the general path is Settings → Storage or Apps → Pokémon GO → Clear cache; exact labels vary. Do not start with Clear data: it can sign you out and remove local settings. Niantic’s in-game cache procedure is documented at this cache guide.

Snapshot saved but a research task does not count
Photo capture, saving to the gallery, and research registration are separate stages.
- Read the task literally. “Take a snapshot of your Buddy” requires the Buddy screen.
- For a caught-Pokémon requirement, use that Pokémon’s detail page.
- If a species, type, or category is named, photograph a matching Pokémon.
- Wait several seconds, then return to the Research page.
- Close and reopen the app if the counter does not change.
- Refresh Game Data and repeat with another valid Pokémon when the task allows it.
- Use in-app support if the same valid action still fails.
Do not assume a random wild-encounter photo satisfies every task.
Why Smeargle or another photobomb did not appear
A surprise Pokémon appears only occasionally during a GO Snapshot session. Its absence does not prove the camera is broken. Complete the session, exit the photo view, and check the Map for the surprise encounter; repeat later when appropriate. Niantic describes this behavior in its GO Snapshot instructions.
Reinstall and contact Niantic
Reinstall only after permissions, updates, restart, AR compatibility, Refresh Game Data, and cache clearing. Download Pokémon GO from the official App Store or Google Play Store. Progress is stored online when you sign back into the same account, although local preferences may need to be restored.

If the camera remains black or a valid snapshot repeatedly fails, use Pokémon GO’s in-app support. Include the phone model, operating-system version, Pokémon GO version, exact error, screenshot, and whether Buddy Snapshot, caught-Pokémon GO Snapshot, or wild-encounter AR fails. Do not use modified APKs, spoofing utilities, or unofficial “AR unlock” tools.
