You can play a multiplayer light-cycle game directly in a Windows or Linux terminal by connecting with SSH to ssh-tron. The project publishes ssh tron.jpillora.com as its demo command. That endpoint is described as being in Australia, but its current availability is not established, so treat the command as the project’s documented connection route and check whether it responds.
Connect to the documented ssh-tron demo
- Open a terminal. Windows users can use Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or another SSH-capable client; Linux users can use their preferred terminal emulator.
- Run
ssh tron.jpillora.com. - If the server accepts the connection, press Enter to spawn into the game.
ssh-tron is a terminal game, not a graphical desktop release. It describes itself as “Multiplayer Tron (Light Cycles) over SSH, written in Go.” Players steer light cycles while leaving walls behind, so a shared remote server supplies the multiplayer session.
The published demo is in Australia. Players far from that region may experience more delay than nearby players, and the public service may be unavailable even though the command remains in the project documentation.
Terminal requirements and display settings
Use a low-latency connection
The README gives a default game speed of 40 milliseconds per tick and advises keeping network latency below the game speed. A connection whose round-trip delay approaches or exceeds that interval can make steering feel late and reduce your ability to react to walls. Wired networking or a strong local connection can help, but distance to the server still matters.

#1 Best Overall
- Ip32 water resistant – Prevents accidental damage from liquid spills
- 10-zone RGB illumination – Gorgeous color schemes and reactive effects
- Whisper quiet gaming switches – Nearly silent use for 20 million low friction keypresses
- Premium magnetic wrist rest – Provides full palm support and comfort
- Dedicated multimedia controls – Adjust volume and settings on the fly
Make sure braille characters render
The game uses Braille Unicode characters for parts of its display. Your terminal and font need to support those glyphs. If they do not, walls can appear as missing-glyph squares, diamonds, or other replacement symbols. Install or select a font with Braille coverage if the board looks corrupted.
Prefer a dark terminal background
The project recommends a dark background for appearance and contrast. This is a presentation recommendation rather than a gameplay requirement.

- Dynamic RGB Backlighting: Light up your desktop with six onboard lighting effects, assign a color to each lighting zone, or program your own vibrant lighting effects across five RGB lighting zones with CORSAIR iCUE software.
- Six Dedicated Macro Keys: Activate functions, shortcuts, or keypresses in just one stroke with six dedicated macro keys, easily set up through CORSAIR iCUE software, or use instant streaming commands through Elgato Stream Deck software.
- Dust and Spill-Resistant Design: IP42-rated protection guards against accidents so your gameplay never has to stop.
- Detachable Palm Rest: A soft rubber palm rest reduces stress on your hands so you can play longer in comfort, with a textured surface to keep your hands from slipping.
- Dedicated Volume and Media Keys: Convenient control for media playback and fine-tuning volume on-the-fly without having to interrupt your game.
If the SSH command does not work
- Connection refused or timed out: the documented public endpoint may be offline, blocked by your network, or unreachable from your location. Try again later or use a self-hosted server.
- SSH is not recognized: install or enable an OpenSSH client on Windows, or install the OpenSSH client package supplied by your Linux distribution.
- The board contains diamonds or empty squares: change to a terminal font that includes Braille Unicode characters.
- Controls feel delayed: test from a lower-latency network or host a private server closer to the players.
Host your own ssh-tron server
Self-hosting removes dependence on the public demo and lets you choose the server’s network location. The project documents three installation routes: Docker, downloadable binaries, and building from source. These are project instructions and should be checked against the current repository before use.
Docker route
The documented example publishes container port 2200 on host port 22. In practice, adapt the port mapping to your machine and firewall policy; binding a service to port 22 can conflict with an existing SSH daemon. The README also describes an optional database mount for saving player scores.

Binary route
Download the release binary appropriate for your server platform, configure its listening port and world dimensions, then allow that TCP port through the host firewall. The project documentation does not establish a Windows- or Linux-specific tested walkthrough, so follow the current release instructions for the exact executable and flags.
Build-from-source route
Build the Go project from its source instructions, start the resulting server, and expose the configured TCP port. This route is useful when you need a platform or configuration not covered by a prebuilt binary, but it requires the toolchain and dependencies specified by the current project.

Once your server is listening, players connect with an SSH command that targets your host and chosen port. Protect the machine with normal server practices: keep the operating system updated, restrict unnecessary inbound ports, and avoid exposing administrative services unintentionally.

If you want the same basic idea in a conventional 3D game, Armagetron Advanced is a separate option. Its official site describes customizable arenas, a HUD, AI bots, and configurable game modes and physics. The site reports version 0.2.9.3.0 on April 18, 2026, with attention to source compatibility on current Linux distributions. The cited information does not establish Windows compatibility for that latest release, so verify platform support before installing.
