A DualSense update usually succeeds after the PS5 itself is current, the controller has enough charge, and it is connected with a reliable USB-C data cable. If the update still fails, try Sony’s Windows PlayStation Accessories updater, then reset and re-pair the controller. These steps cannot repair a failed battery, USB-C port, or internal board; persistent failure is a job for PlayStation Repairs or replacement.
First identify what is actually failing
“Won’t update” can describe several different faults. Identify the symptom before changing settings:
- No controller-update prompt appears.
- The update starts and stops at a percentage or reports that the controller disconnected.
- The controller works wirelessly but not through USB, or works by USB but will not pair wirelessly.
- The controller repeatedly requests an update.
- The controller will not power on or show a light.
- PlayStation Accessories on Windows cannot detect it.
- The update completes, but the controller then disconnects or loses pairing.
A PS5 system-software failure, Bluetooth pairing problem, USB data problem, and controller hardware fault can look similar, so follow the branches below.
1. Charge the controller and restart the PS5
Charge the controller before retrying. Sony does not publish a minimum battery percentage, but a low charge can complicate connection and update attempts. Not every USB charger can charge a DualSense; connect it directly to the PS5 or another known-compatible charger. The controller can charge from the PS5 in Rest Mode when USB power is enabled.

- Simultaneously charge and play your DualSense Controller
- 10 foot braided cable with durable metal housing
- USB to USB-C charging cable
- Officially Licensed by Sony
Restart the PS5 normally, then retry. Do not repeatedly unplug a controller while firmware is actively being written.
2. Replace the USB-C cable and port
Use the cable supplied with the PS5 or controller if available. Otherwise use a known-good USB-C cable that supports data as well as charging. A cable can supply power while failing to maintain the data connection required by an updater.
- Connect directly to the PS5, not through a hub, extension, or adapter.
- Try another PS5 USB port.
- Inspect the plug and controller port for looseness or visible damage.
- Avoid worn, excessively long, or intermittently disconnecting cables.
Sony recommends the official or included cable when reconnecting after a reset: DualSense troubleshooting.
3. Update PS5 system software first
Sony delivers controller software updates alongside PS5 system-software updates. On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software, then install any available update. Updating the PS5 does not guarantee an immediate controller update; the controller still must be paired and connected correctly.

4. Start the DualSense update manually
For a standard DualSense:
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the controller with a compatible data-capable USB cable.
- Press the PS button if pairing is required.
- Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and leave the cable connected until completion.
Sony does not provide a separate “force-update controller firmware from Safe Mode” procedure. Safe Mode updates PS5 system software, not a special DualSense recovery image. See Sony’s DualSense support page.
5. Update through a Windows PC
If the PS5 route fails, use Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application:
- Install PlayStation Accessories from Sony’s controller support page.
- Connect the controller directly to a Windows PC with a USB-C data cable.
- Open PlayStation Accessories and wait for detection.
- Accept the update prompt and keep the controller connected until it finishes.
Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 support. If the app detects nothing, change the cable and USB port, avoid a hub, close remapping or controller-management software, restart the app and PC, and try the reset procedure below. Sony’s cited support does not establish a macOS firmware-update workflow for standard DualSense.

6. Reset the DualSense
Resetting clears controller state and connection problems; it is not a firmware reinstallation and is not a guaranteed hardware repair.

7. Pair it again
After resetting or moving the controller to another PS5, connect it by USB, press PS, and wait for the account-selection or home screen before removing the cable. A DualSense pairs with only one PS5 at a time.
To add a second controller using one that already works, go to Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories. On the second controller, hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes, then select it from the list. Sony’s pairing guidance is at DualSense controller support.
If the PS5 itself will not update
Treat this as a console system-software problem, not a controller-firmware fix. Sony’s manual update method requires a USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT, about 1.1 GB of free space, and this exact structure: PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Copy the official update file into the
UPDATEfolder. - Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Hold the power button and release after the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for a routine controller problem. Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all console data. Use only official update files and instructions: PS5 system software support.

When to stop troubleshooting
Test one additional known-good data cable, another USB port, and—if possible—another compatible device. If the controller is detected on PC but not PS5, update the PS5, reset, and re-pair; that pattern suggests a console-side, port, or pairing issue, but it is not a definitive Sony diagnosis. If it fails on both PS5 and Windows, will not power on, or has a damaged USB-C port, software steps are unlikely to help.
Use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic and service process. Repair eligibility, cost, shipping, and warranty coverage depend on country and product condition. If repair is impractical, compare a new or certified-refurbished DualSense through Sony’s live listings: new DualSense and PS5 accessories. Do not buy a DualSense Edge merely to solve a standard controller update failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update a DualSense without a PS5?
Yes. Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application can update a DualSense on a Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 PC over a USB data connection.
Can Safe Mode update DualSense firmware?
Sony documents Safe Mode for PS5 system-software updates and recovery, not as a separate DualSense firmware updater.
Does resetting delete games or profiles?
The controller reset is a hardware reset, not a PS5 data reset. You must reconnect the controller by USB afterward.
Why does the controller charge but not update?
The cable may provide power without a stable data connection. Try the included or another known-good data-capable cable and a different direct USB port.
When should I replace the controller?
After cable, port, reset, PS5, and Windows tests fail—or when the controller has clear battery, USB-C, or internal hardware symptoms—use PlayStation Repairs or compare replacement options.
