Sometimes—but not automatically. Whether another player can see your public IP depends on how the game, party system, or voice feature connects people. Dedicated-server and relay-based systems generally keep players from seeing one another’s addresses, while peer-to-peer (P2P) connections can expose IP information. Clicking an external tracking link is another common route.
The short answer
A public IP identifies your internet connection as seen by online services. It is not your console ID, username, private address such as 192.168.1.25, MAC address, or exact street address.
The game operator normally sees connecting IP addresses for routing, matchmaking, security, abuse prevention, and logging. The FTC treats IP addresses as persistent identifiers in its COPPA guidance for online services, including internet-enabled gaming platforms: FTC COPPA guidance.
Other players may see an address only when the relevant feature creates a direct connection, an external service logs it, a vulnerability exposes it, or someone is bluffing. A gamertag, Steam profile, Discord username, or console ID does not automatically reveal an IP.

How online games connect players
Dedicated game servers
Your client connects to a server operated by the publisher or hosting provider. Opponents normally receive the server’s address, not your home connection’s address. This reduces direct-player exposure, although it does not stop phishing, account attacks, or malicious links.
Relay servers
A relay forwards traffic between players so the endpoints do not have to connect directly. Platform parties and voice systems may use relays, but implementation can vary by title, console generation, region, and software version.
Peer-to-peer connections
In P2P play, clients communicate directly. Microsoft’s PlayFab documentation explains that every client may need to know the other clients’ IP addresses and identifies shared addresses as a denial-of-service risk: PlayFab direct peer connectivity.

Hybrid designs
A game can use a dedicated server for matchmaking, P2P for a match, and a relay for voice—or a different combination. Do not assume the match architecture tells you how parties, invitations, or voice chat work.

How to check a game’s current networking model
- Read the publisher’s current support or privacy documentation for “dedicated servers,” “relay,” “P2P,” or “direct peer connectivity.”
- Check the platform’s current party and voice-chat documentation.
- Prefer current official information over an old forum post or a third-party “IP resolver” claim.
- Treat any shell or network check as limited evidence. For example,
nslookup example-game-server.comorping example-game-server.commay show a server, relay, CDN, or regional endpoint—not every player’s address. A DNS lookup cannot prove that a game is or is not P2P.
Ways an IP can be obtained
- Direct P2P gameplay: participating clients may receive one another’s addresses.
- Direct voice or party connections: these can use a different architecture from the match.
- External links: an attacker may send a fake tournament, replay, giveaway, verification, or image link that logs visitors. Discord warns about malicious IP-grabber links and says Discord itself does not share one user’s IP with another: Discord safety guidance.
- Compromised or unofficial software: malware or an untrusted tool can expose more than an ordinary game connection.
- Bluffing or stale information: a person may have an old address, a rough location guess, information from social media, or no address at all.
“Resolver” is an informal term for lookup services, logging links, username-to-IP claims, or intimidation scams. Do not use or share IP-logging tools.
What someone can—and cannot—do with your IP
| Usually possible | Not normally possible from the IP alone |
|---|---|
| Identify the ISP or network provider | Read private messages or view your screen |
| Estimate a broad geographic area | Obtain your exact street address |
| Probe publicly reachable services or ports | Automatically take over your router |
| Attempt a DoS or DDoS flood | Automatically access every device at home |
| Correlate the address with public usernames or posts | Determine your real name with certainty |
Geolocation databases are approximate. Identifying the subscriber behind an address generally requires ISP records and appropriate legal process. Risk increases if a router, IoT device, game server, or other internet-facing service is outdated, misconfigured, or vulnerable.

What a DDoS threat means
A denial-of-service attack tries to overwhelm a connection with traffic; a distributed denial-of-service attack uses many systems. For a home player, the practical effects are high latency, disconnects, inability to reach game servers, modem or router instability, and disruption for other household devices. It is primarily an availability problem, not proof that malware has infected your device or that an account has been taken over.
A threat followed by one disconnect is not proof of DDoS. Look for sustained or repeated outages, preserve timestamps, and let the ISP diagnose the connection.
Reduce exposure before anything happens
- Use current privacy, party, and voice settings on the game and platform.
- Decline unknown party invitations and do not open links from hostile players.
- Update router firmware, game software, operating systems, and connected devices.
- Change the router’s default administrator credentials and use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi security.
- Disable remote administration, WPS, and UPnP where they are unnecessary. The FTC’s router guidance covers these controls: FTC home Wi-Fi security.
- Consider a VPN only for a specific privacy or routing need. A VPN can make a service see the VPN server’s address, but may add latency and jitter, slow speeds, affect matchmaking, be blocked by a game, and give the VPN provider another party handling connection metadata. It cannot erase an address already exposed or fix phishing, malware, a weak router password, or an account takeover.

What to do if someone says they have your IP
- Stop engaging. Do not argue, threaten back, or click a link they send.
- Save evidence. Keep usernames, platform IDs, messages, timestamps, match details, screenshots, and any outage times.
- Block and report the account through the game and platform. PlayStation’s safety guidance covers blocking, reporting, and avoiding personal-information exposure: PlayStation Safety Guide.
- Harden the network. Apply router updates, change the administrator password, and disable unnecessary remote administration and UPnP.
- Contact the ISP if service is being flooded or remains unavailable. Ask whether it can change or rotate the public IP or provide DDoS assistance; assignment depends on the provider and connection type.
- Escalate credible threats or sustained attacks. CISA recommends preserving attack details and coordinating with the ISP or a mitigation provider: CISA DDoS guidance. Legal treatment varies by jurisdiction, so avoid retaliating or attempting to attack the other player.
If the person already has the address
Changing an IP may help against an ongoing flood, but it is not guaranteed. Some ISPs retain dynamic assignments; some connections use carrier-grade NAT; IPv4 and IPv6 can behave differently; and restarting a router may return the same address. Ask the ISP for its exact procedure rather than relying on a universal modem-reset promise.
IP rotation also does not stop harassment tied to your account or social identity, and it cannot repair a compromised device, game account, or server. The ISP, platform, and game publisher each hold different evidence: the ISP can diagnose traffic and assignment, while the platform or publisher can investigate accounts, sessions, and abuse reports.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone find my exact address from my IP?
Usually not. An IP can suggest an ISP and approximate area; an ordinary player normally cannot obtain your exact street address from it alone.

Can a gamertag reveal my IP?
No. A username is not an IP lookup. Exposure requires a direct connection, an external logging link, a vulnerability, or information obtained elsewhere.
Can someone get my IP from Discord?
Discord says it does not share one user’s IP with another. A malicious link sent through Discord can still log the visitor’s address if opened.
Will restarting my router change my IP?
It may change a dynamic address, but the ISP controls assignment and can return the same one. Ask the ISP if you need a confirmed change.
Can someone hack me just by knowing my IP?
An IP alone does not grant automatic device access. The risk is higher when internet-facing equipment or services are outdated, exposed, or misconfigured, so patch and harden the router and devices.
The Bottom Line
An online opponent can sometimes obtain your public IP, but the deciding factor is direct connectivity—not the mere fact that you played online. Treat unexpected links and P2P features carefully, secure the router, and involve the platform and ISP if a threat is followed by sustained disruption.
