No. Meta Quest 3 requires a Meta account, not a Facebook account. You use that account with a Meta Horizon profile to activate the headset, download apps, manage purchases and use Meta’s Quest services. Facebook and Instagram connections are optional.
What account does Meta Quest 3 require?
For normal personal use, Quest 3 needs a Meta account. Meta introduced Meta accounts and Meta Horizon profiles as the replacement for the old Oculus-account system and ended the requirement for Facebook logins. Meta said Oculus accounts would no longer be sufficient after January 1, 2023 (Meta’s account announcement).

A Meta account can be kept separate from a public Facebook profile. Linking accounts may provide connected social features, but it is a choice affected by your settings and region.
Can you use Quest 3 without ever joining Facebook?
Yes. Create or sign in to a Meta account with an email address and password, then use that account for the headset. Do not create a Facebook account merely to complete setup.

Meta’s app and website labels can change by country, age category and app version, so look for an option to create or sign in with a Meta account rather than relying on one permanent button name.
What you need before setup
- Meta-account credentials, or an email address for a new account.
- The official Meta Quest or Meta Horizon mobile app if the current setup flow requests a phone or tablet.
- Wi-Fi or another internet connection.
- A charged headset and controllers so pairing and firmware updates can finish.
- The user’s accurate date of birth. Age information controls account protections and can trigger verification.
How to set up Quest 3 without Facebook
- Install or open the official Meta Quest/Horizon app if prompted by the headset.
- Choose the Meta-account sign-in or account-creation path, not Facebook login.
- Register with an email address and password, or sign in to the intended existing Meta account.
- Enter the user’s real date of birth.
- Pair the app with the headset and complete software and firmware updates.
- Create or configure the Meta Horizon profile.
- Add payment information only if you plan to buy apps, games or accessories.
The exact screens may differ. The important choice is using the correct Meta account from the beginning, because purchases, saved data and account history are associated with accounts.

What works without Facebook?
Core Quest features
A Meta account is enough to activate Quest 3, install Quest Store software, manage purchases and use the headset’s VR and mixed-reality functions. Passthrough, hand tracking and controller tracking are headset capabilities, not Facebook-account requirements. Meta describes Quest 3’s mixed-reality hardware in its product announcement (Meta Quest 3).
Social and multiplayer features
Facebook is not the baseline requirement for multiplayer. However, an individual game may require a publisher account, subscription or another platform login. Social features involving Facebook friends, cross-platform linking, casting or sharing can also have separate app, phone or regional requirements.

Using a separate Meta account does not mean Meta collects no data or that all services are completely isolated from Facebook. It means Facebook is not required to activate and use Quest 3 itself.

Meta safety documentation states that Quest use has a minimum age of 10, although requirements can vary by country and applicable law (Quest safety guide). Never enter an adult’s birthday to bypass age controls. Meta may request birthday confirmation or identity or payment-card verification when age information appears inaccurate, and access can be restricted until the issue is resolved (Meta’s age-appropriate experience guidance).

Use separate eligible Meta accounts when different family members need their own profiles, privacy settings, age controls or saved data. Meta support describes the first account paired with a headset as the administrator account. App sharing may let secondary accounts access some apps bought by that account, but it has limits, can change and does not transfer ownership of every purchase (Meta community support discussion).

Do not treat one shared login as a reliable family arrangement: it mixes profiles and age settings and can make account recovery or purchase ownership harder.
What if setup keeps asking for Facebook?
- Confirm that you are using the current official Meta Quest/Horizon app.
- Look for a separate Meta-account sign-in or sign-up option.
- Update the mobile app and headset.
- Sign out, close and restart the app to clear a cached old login session.
- Try creating or managing the Meta account in a browser, then return to the app.
- Contact Meta support if the account is locked, age verification appears or purchases are missing.
Do not make a duplicate Facebook account as a workaround. It can split purchases, create conflicting identity or age information and make recovery more difficult.
What about an old Oculus account?
An Oculus login is not a permanent alternative. Meta provided a transition to Meta accounts and said Oculus accounts would no longer be enough to continue using Meta VR devices after January 1, 2023. If you are moving from Quest 1 or Quest 2, use the Meta-account migration or recovery process associated with the original account. Do not create a Facebook account solely to recover purchases, and do not assume a new Meta account will inherit another account’s purchases.
Should you link Facebook anyway?
If you already have Facebook, Meta may offer the option to connect it through Accounts Center. That can make some connected social experiences more convenient, but it also links the accounts more closely for login, privacy and recovery purposes. A separate Meta account is the straightforward choice if you want VR access without joining Facebook.
