Roblox is not officially supported on Linux. Roblox lists 64-bit Windows 10/11 and macOS 10.13 or later for desktop use, not Linux (official requirements). Nevertheless, many x86-64 Linux users can play through Sober, an unofficial runtime for Roblox’s Android client. Roblox Studio is a separate problem: Vinegar can attempt to run it through Wine, but creators who need dependable publishing and collaboration should retain Windows or macOS access.
Does Roblox officially support Linux?
No. Roblox’s own requirements page states that Linux is unsupported. That means there is no official Linux Player or Studio package, no Roblox Linux support commitment, and no guarantee that an unofficial workaround will continue to function.
This is different from saying Roblox can never run on Linux. Sober provides a practical community route for playing experiences, but it does not change Roblox’s official support status.
The best current way to play Roblox on Linux: Sober
For ordinary gameplay, Sober is the most practical Linux-focused option in 2026. It uses Roblox’s Android application inside a specialized runtime rather than running the Windows client through Wine. Sober describes itself as experimental, closed-source, unaffiliated with Roblox, and unsupported by Roblox (project site; repository).

Install Sober with Flatpak
If Flatpak is installed on your distribution, run:
flatpak install flathub org.vinegarhq.Sober
- Install Flatpak if your distribution does not already provide it.
- Install Sober from Flathub using the command above, or use the Flathub listing.
- Launch Sober from your application menu.
- Follow its first-run prompt to obtain or install the Roblox Android package.
- Sign in and open an experience through the prompted browser or launch flow.
The Flathub page viewed for this article showed package org.vinegarhq.Sober, x86_64 architecture, proprietary licensing, and version 1.7.1; its changelog referenced Roblox version 2.725.1142 on August 18, 2026. Treat that listing as a dated display, not a promise that it is the newest build when you install.
Sober requirements
These are Sober/runtime requirements, not official Linux requirements from Roblox. The project’s installation documentation lists:

| Component | Baseline | Preferred or important note |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | x86-64/AMD64 | SSE4.2 is recommended; SSE4.1-only CPUs may use slower emulation |
| Kernel | Linux 5.11 or newer | A newer kernel can improve compatibility |
| Graphics | OpenGL ES 3.0 capable | Vulkan 1.1 is recommended |

Technical trust and Roblox policy are separate questions. Sober is distributed through Flathub, but it is closed-source and experimental. Its maintainers warn that it may be discontinued and that Roblox does not support it. Review the project’s issue tracker and documentation rather than downloading unofficial “patched” packages.
Roblox’s anti-cheat guidance tells users to use the official, unmodified application and warns against software that changes how Roblox works. It says violations can result in temporary suspension or permanent account action in repeated cases. That does not establish that every Sober user will be banned, nor does it establish that Sober is approved. It does establish uncertainty.

- Never combine Sober with executors, injectors, exploit tools, modified APKs, or cheating software.
- Do not treat an unofficial runtime as guaranteed safe for a valuable account or purchased inventory.
- If you independently accept the uncertainty, a secondary account is a risk-management choice, not a guarantee of protection.
Why old Wine and Lutris guides are unreliable for Roblox Player
Older Linux guides commonly installed the Windows Roblox client with Wine or Lutris. Community reporting attributes the subsequent breakage to Roblox’s Hyperion anti-cheat changes (community history). Sober became the more relevant Player approach because it uses the Android client instead of the Windows client.
Wine remains relevant to Studio through Vinegar, but there is no generally supported, dependable Wine method for the current Roblox Player.

Can Roblox Studio run on Linux?
Studio and Player should be treated as different projects. Roblox officially describes Studio as available on PC and Mac (Roblox support). Vinegar attempts to run Studio through Wine and is an unofficial workaround.

Vinegar may be suitable for experimentation, but graphics drivers, Wine changes, Roblox updates, plugins, and collaboration features can break independently. Keep a supported Windows or Mac installation available if you depend on publishing deadlines, Team Create, plugins, reliable playtesting, console testing, or Roblox support.
Alternatives to Sober
| Method | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sober | Playing on compatible x86-64 Linux | Unofficial, closed-source, experimental and update-dependent |
| Vinegar | Studio experimentation | Unofficial Wine compatibility can be fragile |
| Waydroid | Advanced Android-on-Linux users | More setup; variable GPU, input and security compatibility |
| Windows dual boot | Reliable Player and Studio | Requires Windows storage, installation and maintenance |
| Windows virtual machine | Specialist testing | Roblox says virtual machines and cloud computers are unsupported |
| Xbox or mobile | Play-only use | Not suitable for Studio or desktop workflows |
Waydroid can run Android applications in a Linux container, but it requires more configuration than Sober and may involve Google Play setup, GPU tuning, controller mapping and windowing problems. Some experiences may reject or restrict containerized environments. Roblox’s current error guidance explicitly says virtual machines and cloud computers are unsupported (error-code guidance).

SteamOS is Linux, so Steam Deck has no official Roblox client. Owners can investigate Sober on compatible x86-64 installations, but controls, Steam Input, fullscreen, suspend/resume and performance are device-specific and unsupported. Do not assume every experience or controller feature works.

Common problems and recovery steps
Sober will not launch
- Confirm that the CPU is x86-64 and meets the documented SSE requirements.
- Update Linux packages, the kernel, graphics drivers, Flatpak metadata and Sober.
- Run Sober from a terminal to capture errors.
- Check the project issues for Vulkan, NVIDIA and release-specific failures.
- Follow current project troubleshooting before changing graphics settings or reinstalling.
The Flathub changelog has included Vulkan crash fixes and workarounds for certain NVIDIA driver releases, so driver-specific failures are a real maintenance concern.
An experience opens but fails
The experience may use an unsupported feature, platform-specific input or voice function, a newer security check, or an Android version temporarily out of sync. A June 2026 maintainer discussion reported testing of Android Remote Attestation for selected experiences and described it as potentially incompatible with Sober; this is an emerging, experience-specific risk, not proof that all Roblox games are blocked.
Login, controller and feature issues
Browser login and account switching workflows can change between Sober releases. Mouse capture, gamepad mapping, Steam Input, fullscreen, voice chat, recording, overlays and notifications also require release-specific verification. Roblox says its video-recording feature works only on Windows 10 and 11, illustrating why Linux feature parity should not be assumed (requirements page).
A Roblox update breaks everything
Roblox can change its Android app, authentication, graphics APIs, attestation or security requirements before Sober catches up. The Linux kernel, Mesa, NVIDIA drivers and Flatpak runtime can introduce another layer of change. This update dependence is the central cost of using an unofficial client.
Which option should you choose?
- I only want to play on Linux: Try Sober on a compatible x86-64 desktop and accept that experiences and updates may vary.
- I want to create seriously: Treat Vinegar as an experiment and keep Windows or macOS for reliable Studio work.
- I use ARM Linux: Do not plan around Sober until current project documentation confirms support.
- I need official support and predictable account compatibility: Use Windows, macOS or another officially supported Roblox device.
For the lowest-maintenance experience, a supported Windows installation remains the dependable choice. For Linux users willing to troubleshoot and tolerate interruptions, Sober is the clearest current way to play.
