The Minecraft Launcher message does not necessarily mean your Windows PC is offline. It can mean the Launcher cannot reach Microsoft account authentication, ownership verification, Microsoft Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, or Minecraft download services. First determine whether every app is offline, whether Microsoft Store and Xbox also fail, and whether the problem affects Java, Bedrock, or both. Then repair only the layer that is failing.
Quick diagnosis before changing Windows settings
- Test unrelated websites. If several sites and other apps fail, start with your Wi-Fi, Ethernet, router, or ISP. If browsing works, the Launcher error is probably app-specific or related to Microsoft services.
- Open Microsoft Store and Xbox. Try signing in and loading your library. If both fail, focus on Windows updates, Store cache, account authentication, and Gaming Services rather than reinstalling Minecraft immediately.
- Check service status. Review the Xbox status page at Xbox Live status and look for Minecraft or Microsoft service notices. Record the date and time of the check; an outage can make local repairs ineffective.
- Copy the exact message and error code. Preserve every character in codes beginning with
0x. “Can’t connect to Minecraft services,” “Unable to verify owned products,” and “Please check your internet connection” can all result from account or service failures, not just a bad router. - Identify the affected edition. Java, Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), Game Pass installations, and Launcher sign-in use overlapping but different Windows components.

If the whole PC has no usable internet
Check that Wi-Fi is enabled, the correct network is selected, airplane mode is off, and an Ethernet cable is seated. Public networks at hotels, airports, schools, or libraries may require a browser sign-in (a captive portal) before applications can connect. A router restart is reasonable when every device is affected; it will not repair an isolated Launcher or account problem.
For persistent Windows connectivity trouble, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsipconfig /releasedrops the current DHCP address.ipconfig /renewrequests a new address.ipconfig /flushdnsclears the local DNS resolver cache.
These are general Windows recovery steps, not a guaranteed Minecraft fix. Microsoft documents them in its Wi-Fi and network troubleshooting guidance. If the Launcher works on Ethernet or a phone hotspot, investigate the original router, DNS provider, parental controls, ISP filtering, or managed-network policy.

If browsing works but the Launcher does not
Remove unintended proxy or VPN routing
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy and look for an unexpected manual proxy. Disconnect a VPN for a controlled test. School, workplace, library, and parental-control networks may block game or Microsoft endpoints; you may not have permission to change those rules.
Test security software safely
Third-party antivirus products can filter HTTPS traffic, and Windows Firewall can have a rule for the Launcher, Java, Xbox, or Store components. Do not disable the firewall permanently. If testing shows that security software is responsible, restore protection and add a narrowly scoped allow-list exception through that product.
Correct time, region, and HTTPS prerequisites
Incorrect date, time, time zone, or region settings can break Store authentication. Check Settings > Time & language > Date & time and Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Microsoft’s Store guidance also covers modern TLS and the related 0x80131500 error at Microsoft Store error 0x80131500. Do not enable obsolete TLS versions as a generic Minecraft fix; altered TLS policy is mainly relevant when Store or HTTPS connections are failing after an old program or corporate policy changed Windows settings.

Use the same Microsoft account everywhere
Check the email address shown in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. The account that owns Minecraft (or carries the Game Pass entitlement) must be the account used for the relevant purchase and services. A Launcher account, Store account, and Xbox account that differ can produce ownership and connection messages even while the internet is healthy.

Sign out and back in only after recording which account owns the game. Do not purchase Minecraft again until ownership has been verified at the correct account. Family or child accounts can sign in successfully while Xbox privacy or family settings still block online play; that is separate from a Launcher connection failure.
Update Windows, Microsoft Store, and the Launcher
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending updates in Settings > Windows Update.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library > Get updates, and let Store components update.
- In Minecraft Launcher, open Settings > About and install an available Launcher update.
Microsoft’s recommended Store-app order is close and reopen the app, update Windows and Store, repair or reset the app, and reinstall only if necessary. See Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store. Minecraft lists its current Launcher update and download paths at Minecraft.net/download.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache
A corrupted Store cache can affect Bedrock, Game Pass, and Store-installed Launcher files. Press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and select OK. Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen, then restart the Launcher. This resets the Store cache; it does not prove that DNS, account, or service availability is the cause. Microsoft documents the procedure at I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.
Repair or reset Minecraft Launcher
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Minecraft Launcher, select its menu, and open Advanced options. Windows 10 uses a similar Apps path, although labels can vary by build.
- Select Repair first. Windows attempts to correct the installation without normally deleting app data.
- If Repair fails, select Reset. Reset reinitializes app data and may sign you out or remove local Launcher settings.
Record your account details before Reset. Launcher data, Java installations, worlds, screenshots, and mod folders are not necessarily stored in the same location, but you should still back up important worlds and avoid deleting folders manually. When Xbox or Gaming Services is the failing layer
This branch matters most for Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), Game Pass, Microsoft Store installations, and failures that affect both the Xbox app and Launcher. Open Xbox and Microsoft Store, confirm that they sign in with the ownership account, and check whether Gaming Services is installed and updated.
If those components remain broken, use Microsoft’s official Gaming Services Repair Tool. It is a recovery option for the Xbox/Store path, not a universal internet repair utility and not a required fix for every Java-only authentication problem.
Avoid forum scripts that remove Gaming Services registry entries or AppX packages. They can create additional installation problems. Prefer the official tool, Store updates, Repair/Reset, and Microsoft support.

Edition-specific branches
Java Edition only
Concentrate on Launcher sign-in, Microsoft account ownership, Launcher updates, version metadata, proxy or firewall rules, and Minecraft service status. A Java-only failure does not automatically mean Xbox Gaming Services is defective.
Minecraft for Windows, Bedrock, or Game Pass
Check Microsoft Store, Xbox identity, Gaming Services, subscription entitlement, and family privacy settings in addition to the Launcher. Store cache reset and the Gaming Services Repair Tool are more relevant here.
Multiplayer, Realms, Marketplace, or servers
If the Launcher signs in and downloads correctly but multiplayer, Realms, Marketplace, or a server fails, the Launcher may already be connected. Investigate Xbox privacy settings, account restrictions, NAT, the particular Realm or server, or the game service. Do not treat a server outage as a Windows Launcher internet failure.
Advanced network causes and cautions
- DNS: Flushing DNS is a diagnostic step. It is not proof that changing DNS providers will solve Minecraft.
- Router filtering: Parental controls, content filters, enterprise policies, or ISP filtering can block Microsoft endpoints while ordinary websites work.
- IPv6: Router- or ISP-specific IPv6 incompatibility has been associated with some Xbox or Launcher symptoms, but it is not a standard fix. Do not disable IPv6 unless a qualified administrator or manufacturer documents that requirement.
- Disk and permissions: Download failures can result from insufficient disk space or a location Windows cannot write to, even when authentication succeeds.
- Captive portals: Complete the browser sign-in on public Wi-Fi before launching the game.
Reinstall only after targeted repairs
Reinstalling can replace corrupted Launcher files, but it will not fix an outage, wrong account, family restriction, router filtering, or a broken Microsoft service. Do it after checking service status, confirming ownership, updating Windows and Store, testing proxy/VPN and security conditions, resetting the Store cache, and repairing the Launcher (plus Gaming Services when relevant).
