For Nintendo 64 games on Switch, Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch Online is the most direct choice: it keeps the original three-prong layout, connects wirelessly, recharges over USB-C and has built-in rumble. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is the main third-party alternative, adding Bluetooth and USB play, a Hall-effect stick and documented vibration support for Switch 64 Online games. Rumble remains game- and controller-dependent rather than identical across every Switch title.
Which N64 controllers work with Switch?
| Controller | Connection and rumble | Best fit | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch Online | Wireless; USB-C rechargeable; built-in rumble replaces the original Rumble Pak | First-party N64 Switch Online play and the original three-prong shape | Designed primarily for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software; compatibility with other games is not guaranteed |
| 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller | Bluetooth 5.0/Bluetooth LE or wired USB; Hall-effect joystick; vibration listed for Switch 1/2 64 Online games | Third-party availability, modern stick hardware and flexible wireless/USB use | Switch 2 requires firmware 3.0.0 or later; rumble is not universal across the Switch catalog |
Nintendo’s official N64 Controller
Nintendo’s controller is wireless and charges through USB-C. Its rumble motor is built in, so you do not need the original cartridge-era Rumble Pak. Nintendo says the pad was designed for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software; it may navigate menus or operate in other games, but Nintendo does not guarantee every button, option or feature outside that intended software.
Who can buy it?
In the United States and Canada, Nintendo’s current support information says a paid Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to purchase the classic controller. The N64 game collection itself requires the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier, which is separate from the controller purchase requirement.
Price, color and quantity limit
Nintendo lists the controller at $49.99 USD or $64.99 CAD, with gray shown in the cited support article, and limits an account to four units of the same classic-controller type. These are Nintendo’s published figures; availability can vary by region and stock.

Pairing and first use
- Open the Switch controller-pairing screen using the console’s Controllers menu.
- Put the N64 Controller into pairing mode and complete the on-screen registration.
- Launch the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software and select a game.
- If vibration is absent, check the console’s controller-vibration setting and the game’s own options before reconnecting the pad.
8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller
8BitDo lists its 64 Bluetooth Controller for Nintendo Switch (including Switch 2), Windows, Android and Analogue 3D. It supports Bluetooth 5.0/Bluetooth LE and wired USB, uses a Hall-effect joystick and lists vibration support for Analogue 3D and Switch 1/2 64 Online games. The manufacturer directs buyers to Amazon and other ordinary retail channels, so a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not presented as a purchase prerequisite.
Switch 2 firmware requirement
For Switch 2, 8BitDo specifies firmware 3.0.0 or above. Update the controller with 8BitDo’s current firmware tools before pairing if the console does not recognize it or features such as vibration do not work as expected.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch, PC and Mac via USB
- Features a controller port and compatibility switch
- Compatible with standard N64 controller models
What its rumble claim means
The documented vibration support is tied to 64 Online games on Switch 1 and Switch 2, not a promise that every Switch game will provide force feedback through the controller. Button mapping and other functions can also vary outside the titles for which the manufacturer lists support.
How rumble behaves on Switch
Rumble intensity is not a fixed standard. Nintendo cautions that HD rumble or controller vibration can differ between two controllers and between games. A softer or stronger effect therefore does not by itself indicate a defective N64 pad.

Using an N64 controller with an original Nintendo 64
If you also want wireless play on original N64 hardware, 8BitDo’s Retro Receiver for N64 is a separate accessory path. Its published compatibility information lists the Nintendo Switch 64 Online Controller and other Bluetooth controllers, allowing them to connect wirelessly to an original N64 or Analogue 3D setup. You do not need this receiver for normal Switch play.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Nintendo’s controller when
- You want first-party support and the authentic three-prong N64 shape.
- Your main use is Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software.
- You are eligible to buy the classic controller under Nintendo’s U.S. or Canada membership rules.
Choose 8BitDo when
- You prefer a regularly stocked third-party retail option.
- You want Bluetooth and USB connections plus a Hall-effect joystick.
- You want documented vibration for 64 Online games and may use Switch 2 after updating firmware.
Add the Retro Receiver when
- You need the same Bluetooth controller to work with original N64 hardware as well as Switch.
What is not guaranteed
Neither controller should be treated as a universal rumble pad for every Switch game. Nintendo does not guarantee the official controller’s full compatibility outside N64 Switch Online software, and 8BitDo’s vibration listing is specific to supported 64 Online titles. Independent measurements of latency, battery life, feel and current retail stock are not established here, so those characteristics should not be inferred from the specifications above.
